Need some advice. Applied for a few jobs. Then one of them contacted me saying very interested to have an interview and asked whether I can travel to Singapore to have the interview.
How should I reply them? Do you all really travel to Singapore just to attend one interview? Or ask them to hold on and try to arrange all interviews in one single trip?
Someone suggested that I should ask for a phone interview first. If things look good then only travel to have a face to face interview.
Please let me know what you think. Appreciate your help. Thanks.

QUOTE(nicedevil @ Jun 21 2012, 09:38 PM) that's the best way i'd say. for my case, my current company willing to pay for my flight ticket for the interview (actually i insisted). i guess i'm lucky. maybe you can try that also. good luck! I'm sure they must have wanted you very badly to pay for the flight tickets. I don't think I'll be that lucky though Added on June 21, 2012, 10:39 pmQUOTE(Mackiddo @ Jun 21 2012, 10:09 PM) cool. damn lucky. Not many have such a good arrangement. I didn't even manage to go to Sg for the interview , only the interviewer came to KL to conduct the interview for the few of us. At least you didn't have to travel all the way to Singapore. I am just concerned that if the interview doesn't turn out great I would have wasted my trip down to Singapore. No? This post has been edited by TzeThon: Jun 21 2012, 10:39 PM

QUOTE(deodorant @ Jun 22 2012, 07:55 AM) When you go interviews in KL, do you get a 100% success rate? No, right? Do you then say "I wasted that 30 minute drive to KL to attend that interview?" Same thing mah. If you're not willing to "waste that trip" then don't bother coming lor. of course i know that not all interviews are always successful. but it's a bit different to travel to singapore. no? plane tickets to singapore cost around RM300+ and we still need to calculate accommodation for one night. i was just trying to ask whether anyone had that kind of experience whereby you needed to travel to singapore just for one interview. just to know whether this is common. no harm asking right?

QUOTE(seantang @ Jun 22 2012, 09:47 AM) Depends on how many interviews you get, right? If you only have one interview... doesn't matter if it's common or not. You have no choice unless you feel this job is not worth trying for. If you have a few interviews, naturally you would tell them that you're an outstation applicant and try to group all the interviews together into a couple of days. ya i was also thinking about the same thing. i was hoping to group all together (if i do get more than one interviews)

another question. usually when we apply for jobs in malaysia. we state our "expected salary" based on our current salary. but when it comes to singapore. what is the market rate like? is there a website showing the salary trend in singapore? am thinking what to insert in the "expected salary" column. thanks

QUOTE(chess_gal @ Jul 10 2012, 11:06 AM) Be frank, everyone knows why you apply to Singapore. You can indicate your current salary +20% increment. But also depends on your experience, if you are confident just put a price and say negotiable. Just google for singapore salary wage. thanks for the info newbie here

QUOTE(yhoong12 @ Jul 11 2012, 11:31 AM) Do they shortlisted you ? not sure. they said will come back to me. Added on July 11, 2012, 11:56 amQUOTE(chess_gal @ Jul 11 2012, 11:43 AM) Thats what they told me too when I first came to SIngapore. As long as you mention that the salary is slightly negotiable it should okay. They will come back to you if they are serious. But once you past that one step, subsequent job interviews should be okay. You have to justify why 20% increment (after your first job in Singapore) is reasonable. For myself, I said that I am relatively comfortable with my current position and company and my application is to evaluate what's my market value and if the opportunity arises, I would take the plunge to do something different. Therefore 20% is what I am looking for to forgo the comfort and nice environment. You can also justify using your current increment %, eg annual increment 10% + promotion increment (increase of job load) 10% = 20%. Good luck thanks yup my friend told me that too. he said that because we are moving to singapore etc. that's why the salary has to justify the move. do you think they're trying to pay us less just because we're malaysians? QUOTE(Mackiddo @ Jul 11 2012, 12:25 PM) why would you wanna consider anything lesser just because you are Malaysian ? Unless that is what your market worth. of course i won't take the offer if that is too low. but i was just thinking. let's say our expected salary in malaysia is RM4,000. do you ask for $4,000 or $2,000 in singapore?

QUOTE(crazy25kid @ Jul 11 2012, 02:07 PM) well...maybe it is a strategy by companies to try paying less...i had that also. or maybe u are just overpaid in m'sia and i am underpaid. yup that's why i was wondering maybe they know this would be my first job in singapore so they want to pay less Added on July 11, 2012, 2:34 pmQUOTE(deodorant @ Jul 11 2012, 02:01 PM) Early on in your career, your bargaining power tends to be on the low side. The best way would be to find out what is the pay range for somebody in Singapore in your industry with your skills/experience, and use that as a guide. i guess i'll stomach the lower pay for a while first before i get another better paying job. QUOTE(ivanswk @ Jul 11 2012, 01:46 PM) because your peers willing to do it 20% cheaper that why u become expensive maybe rite ya that's always the case. companies would rather hire someone who is asking for a lower pay when both have the same qualifications. this happens in KL as well. sigh.

QUOTE(crazy25kid @ Jul 11 2012, 02:34 PM) all is well and done when u pass your medical. until then, all is not well yet. a failed medical can cause a reversal in pass approval which can cause the offer letter to be invalid. that is the worst case scenario..but nothing to worry about. what do they usually check for?
