I try to answer, correct me if wrong blush.gif
You activate the key under the battle.net account, and the in game character are created under the battle.net account that you logon.
Character are also server base, if u change server (Eg: from US to ASIA server), ur character didn't move over and you have to create new character for other server (under same battle.net account).
Thus, the character are tie with ur battle.net account.
You can play ur character at any places as long as u have the diablo installed and internet connection. But, you can't use ur friend activation key (which assume here, under another battle.net account).
If you use other account, mean another user logon with different character.

Hope it make you clear.... nod.gif

You can use your account anywhere, anytime as long as the PC has up-to-date client (not that with unupdated client you can't play).

The way you ask this question, I can tell this is your first original game you've purchased. Congratulations, thank you for not supporting Jack Sparrow ones.

1. Like other forummers had answered, the activation key is tied to your blizzard account, in which your game characters are associated with your blizzard account. However, characters will be separated based on region as well.

2. Yes. When your friend install D3, there will be no activation key prompting. Treat it as a base game client. Explanation see above.
