I can only assume you got poor "depth perception". 1 car distance away is still dangerous at high speed. Unless your car is a pimped up limo 50 feet long. I normally like to keep 1 car distance away from the car infront.
You'll grow wings and float up to the cloud if the car in front of your slame the brakes if you are "merely" 1 car gap behind.
