The battles seem alright. When it comes to 4X games i like the overall empire management phase, not too keen on the battles so this might be my cup of tea. I have SotS2 but havent played it, still waiting for the devs to fix the game. Though I have good faith that when they're done the game will be good. SotS 1 was awesome.
I've got Trinity, do u still think rebellion is worth the upgrade? The new features dont seem to be worth the price though.
It's a little bit too shallow for me. It's pretty much just a card game. I rather have the Gratuitous Space Battle sort of combat than what it is now.
I just bought SotS 1 because SotS 2 interface is totally unusable.
If you liked Trinity, Rebellion would be worth it. The handful of units and tech that is added to the game may seem to be very little, but the changes these content bring to the table is enormous. They literally changed how the race is meant to be played in some ways. Try to get the $10 discount if you have Trinity through Impulse.
As mainly a TEC player, in Rebellion, TEC is divided to 2 subfaction which is one focusing on defence, like double Starbase in a single gravity well, earlier and cheaper superweapon and a very tough, defense oriented Titan. The other one focus more on offense, such as allying with the neutral rebels and pirates, getting pirates as reinforcements for free and a powerful offensive titan. I find both subfaction plays very differently due to these small changes.
Advent had similar treatment with one focusing on resurrecting "dead" ships and the other one on culture. Still, i cant comment much about Advent because i rarely play them. Vasari varies the most, where one faction focus more on diplomacy to work with their allies, phase jumping Starbase and an incredibly powerful Titan. The other one has the option to fully uproot from their planets to become a mobile flotilla, something like how Quarians are in Mass Effect. Also, an ability on their Titan to fully consume a planet for a lot of resources.
Outside of faction changes, the game also have some under the hood optimisation, textures redone and better graphics in generally, especially shadows. I still think its a bit overpriced for a $40 expansion, but looking back at other expansions like Sup Com's Forged Alliance and so on. I think the price is more or less alright, considering its a standalone expansion.
