If the resolution is fixed at 1366x768, then

Edit: What is" W8 new laptop" you guys talking ,what brand de?

need help from sifu here sweat.gif

finally thanks for helping so much from sifu here , you guys rock  thumbup.gif ,sorry for computer newbie question....

The GPU is the same for the 15R SE and 15R SE FHD, but do take note that when you game at 1366x768 (15R SE) and 1920x1080 (15R SE FHD), you'll notice that the performance for the latter will drop because it'll be more taxing to display more pixels within one screen. But you can always lower resolution to 1366x768.
So the FHD version is still better nod.gif

I see, thanks. Is it a good idea to upgrade to a 128GB ssd for games?
also how is the i5 version compared to the i7 in terms of gaming & performance? i know i5 generates less heat?

Yeah, getting a SSD would be great, like they say, once you used it, you'll never turn back brows.gif
i5 generates less heat and consumes less power... no real need for an i7 if you're only using the laptop for gaming

Something i wonder. Actually normal size/weight laptops are not heavy le.......and they are meant to be brought around le. A 14 inches laptop weight from 2 - 2.5kg not heavy at all le. But nowadays, come out with ultrabook(super light weight)(around 1.5KG) so people choose UB, but at the moment the price is really expensive. It's so damn thin, I wonder how the parts are accomodated into it. cooling system how le? lol
*
Different people, different demands.
Weight is a big problem for those who travel around alot (particularly those traveling overseas, each kg counts)..
Actually the concept of ultrabook is quite good. The manufacturers are creating a laptop that is "all roundered" in all aspects by putting in an SSD (most laptops are bottlenecked by the conventional HDD). Manufacturers realize that most people don't need that much processing power (both CPU and GPU) for their laptops (hell, not everyone is as hardcore as we are over here) anyway...
At this stage ultrabooks are still very expensive, but we can expect the price to drop after awhile~
Since they are running on ULV processors, heat is more or less okay..

These are some of the laptops that make ultrabooks look bad though tongue.gif
Dell
Vostro V131, i3-2350M + Intel HD3000@RM1799[1.82kg], 4GB, 320GB(7200rpm), anti-glare, W7HB, colors: silver/red
Vostro V131, i5-2450M + Intel HD3000@RM1999[1.82kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), anti-glare, W7HB, colors: silver/red

Toshiba
PortƩgƩ R830-2071U, i3-2330M + Intel HD3000@RM2999[1.4kg], W7P, 4GB, 640GB (7200rpm), 2nd & 3rd year international warranty, color: metallic black
PortƩgƩ R830-1004UB/UR/U, i5-2410M + Intel HD3000@RM3499[1.4kg], W7P, 2nd & 3rd year international warranty, Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010; colors: metallic Black/Blue/Red
PortƩgƩ R830-1056UB/UR/U, i5-2430M + Intel HD3000@RM3299[1.4kg], W7P, 2nd & 3rd year international warranty, Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010; colors: metallic Black/Blue/Red
PortƩgƩ R830-2073U, i5-2520M + Intel HD3000@RM4299[1.4kg], W7P, 4GB, 500GB (6400rpm), Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010; color: metallic black
PortƩgƩ R830-2047U, i7-2640M + Intel HD3000@RM4999[1.4kg], W7P, 4GB, 640GB (7200rpm), Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010; color: metallic black

Abit heavier than ultrabooks, but many, many folds more powerful... all they need is an SSD (which you can put in urself) brows.gif

Nay, it's either 1st or 2nd Sept, so I planned to buy one in July, as August will be a very very busy month. I definitely don't want to buy a laptop in a rush tongue.gif

So, does that still mean to come back here again in July? smile.gif

Unfortunately yes laugh.gif
Its the transition period from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge now, most of the laptop lines for each brand are not yet refreshed or updated yet hmm.gif

Marketing strategy at its best my friends laugh.gif
Larger doesn't actually mean that its all better, you'll need to compromise on weight and size, and also shorter battery lives

help me choose a best bang for buck laptop (for girl, will use autocad, google sketch up, no game)

dell 14R special edition i5-3210, 640M, 3 year warranty, RM2499
dell 15R i5-3210, 7670M, 3 year warranty, rm2299
toshiba L840 , i5-2450, 7670M, 3 year warranty, Rm 2199

is there a high reap difference for ivy bridge and sandy bridge i5? cuz the toshiba one got discount after ivy bridge come out.

QUOTE(ego draconis @ Jun 12 2012, 06:26 PM)
but 14R SE will be more expensive Rm300, I know the GPU is much more powerful but this laptop for girl usage. So is it worthy to spend that rm300 for the upgraded Gpu for a non-gamer while the cpu difference is subtle?

Sorry for my much doubt. I'm just cant decide and hesitate so come here ask opinions.

Moreover, do you think a MUST 3 years extended warranty for Dell Inspiron series laptop? since there lot of hardware failure cases?
TQVM.
*
You don't really need such high end laptops based on the stated usage of the girl hmm.gif
But based on all the 3 models you've mentioned, I'd pick the 14R even though its more expensive. The smaller size will be more convenient for girls to carry (in fact, most girls will already say that 14" is too big tongue.gif)... and not to mention the top notch Dell warranty would be very nice to have too~
Like what PhungTM has mentioned, try waiting if you can because the current laptops will eventually be switched to IB later on. I'm sure you don't wanna pay the same price for older specs right? laugh.gif

Sorry, Im forgot to mention all the 3 model mentioned is actually 14inch (the 15R got 14R with exactly same spec and same price)..so in this case, worth the Rm200-Rm300?

*My sister in hurry to purchase before 8/july, so you think the time is sufficient to let all current laptop become IB?
*
Yes, 8th of July is still a long way to go bro nod.gif There will definitely be more options by then
If you must buy now, then just go for the RM2299 Inspiron 14R since she doesn't really need the additional GPU power.

Can try to check out Dell's upcoming Vostro lines with IB if you can wait, those are quite decent as well, especially if the girl is always on the go~

I pick the 14R SE is because of the too worthy of the spec, but then after add on 3 year extended warranty, the price jack up..
And i realize I forgot the original criteria of purchasing laptop for a girl, she just need a decent laptop to run photoshop and autocad.
That why now i hesitate whether take the very worthy laptop but its too much for my sister requirement.
*
You din't mentioned Photoshop in your requirements I think... having an Nvidia card will make Photoshop experience smoother. Not sure whether the same can be said for AMD cards though...

hence wish to get a good graphic card
besides that is there any recommendation of 5.1 sound card? cz roccat kave can only carry out its function when there is a support of 5.1 sound card o~
and allow me to use photoshop or 3d max studio at high setting

4. wish to get 15+ inch de labtop~

Closest would be the Asus N56Vm, which is very not worth it
15.6"
Asus N56VM-S3022V, i7-3610QM + Nvidia GT630M@RM3599, 4GB, 750GB, W7HP

I'd suggest you to wait if you really want Asus since there were rumors that they'll be bring in a newer N56 hmm.gif

Otherwise, just go for this:
15.6"
Lenovo Ideapad Y580, i7-3610QM + Nvidia GTX660M (2GB)@RM3399[JBL], 8GB, 1TB HDD(7200rpm), W7HP

The quality and after sales support should be more or less equal for Asus or Lenovo; unless if you upgrade for on-site warranty support for Lenovo, which is a lot better than Asus.

hold for i5 with ivy bridge? honestly I'm clueless about the bridge..last time the most laptop on dual core..i have no idea the i version and now some storage using SSD? smile.gif

The biggest problem with the current N56vm is the rather weak specifications you are getting for the price. At Rm3.6k, even the GPU in the previous N55@RM2.8k is better than the GPU in the N56... Not to mention the previous N55 has a higher resolution screen as well sweat.gif

Not necessarily hold for the N56 with i5, but to wait for more laptops to come out that might appeal to you tongue.gif

Yea you can upgrade to 8GB RAM easily, one piece of 4GB RAM only costs around RM70 or so nod.gif
The Toshiba Qosmio line is not refreshed yet afaik hmm.gif
And Alienware M17x is out of your budget unfortunately, and the M14x is not worth the money sad.gif
