SME = Official Samsung Warranty of Malaysia
AP = Non-Official Samsung Warranty of Malaysia

Therefore in terms of design, there is no difference.
Only difference is the warranty. You cannot go to official Samsung for warranty claims on AP units.

It's a software update. Don't need to be registered.
If you turn on Auto Update and Push Message (Settings -> About Phone -> Software Update) then you will receive notification if there is an update.
