Not going to smack talk but your friend doesnt know about much about Nikon's move on a high MP body and to be frank, Nikon lenses can sustain the high MP.
D800 is a specific camera for still shooters but heck, you can use it for other purpose too. NIKKOR pro lenses reportedly to be able to cope with the high MP.
D800 produce a very detailed rendition. If compared to D4, D4 looks soft @ 100% while D800 @ 100% looks crispy sharp. Tested with 300mm f/2.8 AF-I, 80-200mm AF-S, and 70-210mm AF-D

When Canon came out 5D Mark II.. its clearly that Canon is directing themselves into videography so MP chase or not, each makers have their own goals and direction now.
