Yesterday.. my dog was giving birth to 2 puppies.. but juz after tat minute my dog ate its own puppy... y is this happening..? Need some explaination.. Thanks

it ate both the puppies... juz a normal dog picked up from the road side.. never give birth b4...

Normally when an animal eats its own kids, it means that she felt threatening by her surroundings, not confidence in bringing her kids up or her kids are not in a good form (cacat in other word).

Did you TOUCh the pups when it was born? It's the same instincts as rabbits that they'll eat up their younglings for the same reason why rabbits eat their young'uns

when it was born no1 was there only my maid... then when my little brother woke up early coz to eager to own a puppy.. he saw blood at the front of the kennel... then the maid told us tat when born the mother immediately juz ate them up...

Wow, sorry to hear that. But i thought dogs/cats never eat their youngs??

Like other forumers said, she might felt threaten but my personal opinion (don't make a fuss out of it) is that your maid might be a contributing factor too.

Every mother protects their own kids. The dog eat their own kids just because it feels that it cant protect her own kids and from her instinct, it just eat the kids up so that the kids wont suffer.

Normally that shoulden't happen but I guess your dog could be under extreme stress at the time. Is this the dogs first time birth...?

During the birth of my dog toby (picture to the left) the family setup a basket with warm blankets and family members was on shift checking. During the birth we didn't touch the pups immediately but let mommy lick first... only later do we touch the pups and help mom rub their bodies and limbs but with the blankets. The rubbing helps stimulate the pups to get moving and we can place them on tits to start suckling.

Since it was Jill's (mommy dog) first birth it was supervised by people to avoid problems.

Anyway another reason why a mom would eat her pups is the pups are all still birth...

i dont know about dogs,but i know one of the reasons why cats eat their young.
sometimes(cant say all the time,as im sure there are other reasons) when the mother gives birth to a kitten,and she tries to bite of the cord(whats it called again?umbrical? forgot...sorry)
anyway,when she tries to bite it off,she inavertantly bites her young....
well,thats why sometimes cats eat their young...tak sengaja,but because the kitten is so small,the mother termakan the baby sekali with the cord...

Have your maid ever see how a newborn pup looks like b4 this time? Memang it's small when it was born. Smaller than a size of a your palm
