It basically boil down to your surfing behavioral and general common sense.

Anyway, I am using Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 now, seems solid.

If you're using a licensed copy of Microsoft Windows, then just use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and should work just fine.

I currently use Norton Internet Security 2012, it's has high detection malware/virus and low false positive result. Im not recommended MSE caused Microsoft no experience in security even they make the os.

I suggest you to read this review: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2369749,00.asp
and choosing for the latest one is the best way smile.gif

I've been using Windows for so long, never once had to pay money for antivirus or any of that stuff. I use free antivirus like AVS (donkey years ago) then bounced over to AVG, then Avast. Now Avast becomes more adware-friendly (that fking no good Google Chrome) I switched once again to Avira. I'm not a celibate monk so I do frequent all the usual "hum" sites. Despite all the hum sites, Russian, China, Japan, you name it, I never once got hit so hard I needed hard disk formatting. I somehow never got hit with Jambanmu when it was spreading all over Malaysia. Completely missed that. When I saw it on my friend's set, I was like, WTF. Is this virus from Malaysia? You very boleh man.

That's why I'm curious why people need to pay for antivirus. Any thoughts?

I suggest you to reading antivirus test and antivirus reviews and compare between the paid antivirus with free antivirus. Most paid antivirus will give better protection than free antivirus, trust me.

But there are free antivirus better than the paid-up, such as Comodo (I know these brands are rarely heard, but it will give good protection to the computer but it is far better than Avira and Avast)

This is antivirus/internet security overall rating by PcMag and was test by Neil J. Rubenking:

Ad-Aware Pro Security 10 - 2.5
Avast Internet Security 7 - 3.5
AVG Internet Security 2012 - 3.0
Avira Internet Security 2012 - 3.0
Bitdefender Internet Security 2012 - 4.0
BullGuard Internet Security 12 - 2.5
Comodo Internet Security 2012 - 4.0
ESET Smart Security 5 - 2.5
F-Secure Internet Security 2012 - 3.0
G Data Internet Security 2012 - 3.0
GFI VIPRE Internet Security 2012 - 3.0
Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 - 3.0
McAfee Total Protection 2012 - 4.0
Norman Security Suite PRO 9 - 2.0
Norton 360 Version 6.0 - 4.5
Norton Internet Security 2012 - 4.5
Outpost Security suite Pro 7.5 - 2.0
Panda Global Protection 2012 - 2.5
PC Tools Internet Security 9.0 - 3.0
Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2012 - 3.5
TrustPort Total Protection 2012 - 2.5
V3 Secure Cloud - 1.5
Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete - 4.5
ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2012 - 4.0

*Full Score for this rating is 5.0

Oh yah, Comodo. Also tried that long long ago in computers far far away (meaning already dumped). Go to this YT:

Scroll down to W84EM's comment.

Comodo's detection rate is TOO TOO GOOD, sorry to say. In fact the same goes for Avira. But I'm sticking by it now because Avast pissed me off with their Google Chrome partnership strategy.

exactly! one of the perks of owning an original version of Windows is having updates and complimentary software like Microsoft Security Essentials. it works very well and seamlessly with Windows, extremely low in resources, works invisibly in the background for both anti-virus and anti-malware protection, and has scored well in many synthetic benchmarks.

What is considered as best? For me, if it does not kacau me with a lot of pop up and does not slow down my PC and protect me from virus then is good. I tried Trendmicro before, I don't like because it eats up my PC resources. Then, I switch to Avira Antivirus and so far so good.

i saw Bit Defender rated as no.1.
kaspersky got second. Only because it's more expensive that bit defender.
in terms of functionality, kaspersky wins.

u can buy licensed AntiVirus
but it will be useless if u dont know how to use it wisely, which is u need extra tools to since AV does not block all type of the computer threat.
that happen a lot to my friends which only got in their mind the paid version is always better than free version. and in the end they comes to me to clear all the virus in their Laptop. and i am only using the free version + extra tool (eg, combofix) to clear their problematic laptop

u can dowload a FREE AV (plus with Internet security pack)
but it will be useless if u dont know how to use it wisely too

BUT if u a good it user, can use the AV or Internet Security effectively even use the free version

i never buy licensed AV because i use the free version of Comodo Internet Security Premium which is packed with AV, Defender, Firewall and etc..

BUT if u really really like to buy the paid version.
I suggest you take AVIRA Internet Security 2012.

BUT remember, if u dont manage the software wisely..it will become useless too.

Like my wife using No 1 Bit Defender, but it useless since she rarely update the virus definition. Luckily she buy tht software before we married. If after we married i will surely suggest her to use the free version only while assist her on how to take care her laptop properly.

Your Sincerely, Virus Breeder.
