Proton P3-21A - More Info to Digest

The anticipation for Proton's new P3-21A sedan continues to build up. As noted in our coverage of the Proton Power of 1 event at Bukit Jalil yesterday, a soft launch for the model has already taken place and bookings are being accepted at showrooms nationwide. The internet has since been flooded with various information of the vehicle, the most pertinent being a very genuine-looking leaked specs sheet on funtasticko design's blog.

Today, we had an opportunity to dig info straight from the source, and it was none other than Dr Wolfgang Epple, Senior Director Operations and Project Director of P3-21A. To give you a bit of a background, Epple was pinched from BMW, and the most telling reference on his CV was his role as the man in charge of developing the E90 3 Series. Serious pedigree then.

Earlier this morning, Dr Epple engaged members of the Malaysian media in a brief interview focused on the development and features of the P3-21A. The objective of the interview was to project the message that the P3-21A is ready to take on the best in the market. Indeed, Dr Epple pointed out that the P3-21A was benchmarked against the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Ford Focus. Sensible choices in our opinion - the Civic and Corolla represents popular market choices, whilst the Focus' dynamics far surpasses the competition, even if it is an outgoing model.

The P3-21A is set to represent a huge quantum leap for Proton in many respects - ride and handling, safety, quality, technology, and performance. Word from inside the company is that this is going to be the best Proton ever, though one should bear in mind that we have heard this claim from Proton before, most noticeably when the Waja was launched.

Indeed, it was surprising - and on a personal note, pleasing - to note that until today, the Waja's body shell is the stiffest ever offered in a Proton car - with an overall stiffness of 13,000 N/mm. Dr Epple tells us that the P3-21A betters that significantly, raising the figure to 18,000 N/mm. The benefits of a stiffer chassis are enormous. In addition to offering better crash protection, it helps to improve ride, handling, and NVH insulation.

Overall development process of the P3-21A took 21 months, though Proton did not exactly start from scratch. The frontal subframe and floor pan is taken from the Exora, but the rear has been altered to fit a multi-link rear suspension in place of the Exora's torsion beam. This revelation is unsurprising when you recall pictures of a certain flattened Exora test mule that was circulating in the Internet. We got a good look under that particular mule some time back, and its multi-link rear suspension was the first thing to catch the eye.

Another aspect of the P3-21A that will be greatly improved from previous Protons is safety. Stability control and side airbags will offered for the first time in a Proton, and Dr Epple noted that the P3-21A is designed with the aim of scoring five stars from Euro NCAP. Of course, it is extremely important to emphasize that the car has not yet passed any tests from Euro NCAP, but that Proton has designed the car to be compliant with the agency's highest rating. To use a student's analogy, Proton has studied for the exam, but the report card certainly isn't out yet.

Proton has yet to commit to a confirmed launch date for the P3-21A, nor has it divulged the new model's name. We do know that Tanjung Malim is already churning out the full production models, so launch date will certainly be in the next month or so. Meanwhile, the engineers have added the engine and front suspension assembly to the bare chassis being displayed at the Power of 1 carnival. We will leave you with the relevant pictures.

Hmmmm...Read about the article as well. Don't have time to go and book liao sweat.gif

Still deciding between black or white. I like black. But reading the comments in the prev thread, lots of people say white will look much nicer. Just don't want to have the yellowing effect though. Or the constant need to wax as was mentioned by someone in the prev thread sweat.gif

So more inclined on black atm.
Lol. Want to teach others but...epic fail. Heh. Like the previous troll-wannabe who uses a car to measure success. I pity the fool. Are we that pathetic nowadays? We measure a man's success, prestige and worth by the car he drives??? WTH happened to our generation? Oh lord. I really feel sorry for them  doh.gif

ANYWAYS, worried because I'm afraid that there will be a sudden spike of people ordering and I have to delay getting the car. I'm kinda 80% decided on the car already. Would really love to test drive the car first though. But takut if wait too long delivery will take too long sweat.gif

Plus, I'm of the opinion that the early batch would be better qc-wise. Problems could easily be rectified via warranty.

I think. Feel free to correct me though laugh.gif

I'm putting my money on proton going all out to salvage their reputation. I used to be a hater. Untill I saw the specs of this car. Heh.
*
For P3, i believe they put all effort to get the first batch user's feedback as the testimonial of what they wanted. I'm not afraid of the QC cause this can be fixed easily and they already put effort into it, but more worried on the design wise. Since it is new chassis, design issue might be a major problem. Not only true for Proton, but others as well.

So in the brochure it says the price range is going to be 60k - 70k, i reckon that's going to be the basic model?

Whereas the Premium specs ones, how much do u think they gonna be? around 80k?
*
75,500 is the highest spec with all the whistles and bells

will previous saga owners regret??...just wondering...no offense though

Saga is basic model. Targeting to different income group. If they can afford a 75k car, they might also bought a vios or city previously. Not a Saga.

wonder if the color, elegant brown, nice or not... white, i have no time to wax. grey/silver maybe better.

fiery red not nice, i saw one flx se fiery red, look dull, if bright red, maybe better.

today plate number reach WWM6084
*
All colors can be found in previous proton such as fiery red in FLX SE, elegant brown in Exora. The Blue lagon is the only new color. I think grey or white looks the best.

Most probably not magnesium. Cmon this is 70k car. Not 140k car. But it is glossy finish.

premium should be at 70K only not 75K. this will beat vios for sure.
*
Change the logo, easily can reach 110k. Just because it is Proton, you expect it to be cheap.

later lunch time u go to peugeot test drive 308thp, and then u wait for this proton preve to come out to test drive.

if you find preve to be better than 308thp( interior, quality, engine, power) , then preve can sell at 110k ( minus 8k from 118k, because preve dont have panaromic roof).

ok?
*
Even it have sunroof, Proton can never sell on that price. But if they are not Proton, they can.

It is not about how cheap can Proton sell, it is about how expensive non-Proton car is selling, people have no problem buying it.

u go sit in the 308thp, and look at the interior.

but i know its not fair.

peugeot has some of the best interior for below 200k region.

(minus peugeot 206).

but look at how they design the interior, its something proton sure can learn one thing or two.

photo will not do any justice, drop by a pug sales center and ask for a test drive wink.gif
*
Look at VW Polo interior. Plain. But people still love it. I love it. That is subjective. How your value things like design is subjective.
And I really don't like Puegoet 308t exterior. Really turn off, if sellling 80k i wont bother. See, how subjective design is for some people.

lol. if u look at the world wide opinion on vw interior. (any vw interior, because they are the same)

dull
boring
solid.

it is not subjective. yes, the most beautiful is subjective, but the ugly one, ppl usually agrees.
====
anyway, my comment is whether preve can be sell at 110k.

if its as reliable as a toyota, and interior is as pretty/solid like peugeot or vw.  Yes. Otherwise, rm75k is the best bet.
*
World wide opinion of Peoguet exterior can be said the same. If you ask those who buy VW, they like the interior. If you ask Pegeout owner they also like theirs.

Preve is not worth 110k. The non-Proton itself not worth that price. I say people are willing to pay that price if it is import and non-proton.

of cos man, ppl driving saga loves their interior too......but if they carries saga interior to preve , then.......
*
That is why i take Polo for example. Because they fall on the 100k above price range. They have dull, boring interior. If put saga interior into polo also people buy. laugh.gif
Preve interior is not bad. It is simple. Quality wise, need real thing to see and touch. By looking trough the pictures, it is better than vios, city or even the Polo.

308T interior really have class. But really dont like the body.

hope you know what i mean, smart keyless entry like forte. but as far as i am concern i couldnt find the button when i saw the cars in Tapah last week.

the physical key is fail safe system. If push start button spoil, you can still use the key to start the engine. Only premium version has this.

they no need to break tradition...they can just simply ask someone else to do the launching
if 6th april cannot thn have to wait till after election already...its too close and he certainly dn't have time
just ask someone else
*
That is already breaking the tradition. All Proton in house car have PM during the launch event. The management really want PM to launch their cars. shakehead.gif
