hi -
Is about the metal used in concrete beams and columns for a bungalow (2 story).
My architect's engineer just specified that the reBar ties should be 8mm (r8), but my contractor said nobody uses r8 - all use r6 - because r8 is too difficult to bend around the main rods. he claims its safer to use more r6 - less chance of a reBar protruding from the concrete.
Anybody got experience on this one?
many thanks, biggrin.gif

hello..im a civil engineer though a fresh one..i think he's right..usually we go for r6 which 6mm in diameters for a minor construction..r8 are rarely used because we usually just go for r10 and they are usually used in taller buildings..r6 is also widely available although the contractor might want to save money on his side..anyway u should try to ask the engineer if he can consider the usage of r6 in his design..hope this help..

If your Engineer insist on using 8mm diameter bars (which is not common) for the links, your contractor could counter propose by using the 6mm at slightly closer spacing. eg. 8mm @ 200mm c/c > 6mm @ 175mm c/c

I don't think market is using R6 (6mm) but is CQ R5.8 (actual diameter about 5.4 - 5.5mm only). Normally, this size is use for ring. However, some of them also using CQ8.3 (actual diameter about 7.9 - 8mm) for ring and it's depend on your building requirement.
