Hi all, i'm planning to get a either a 5x2.5x2.5 or 6x2.5x2.5 tank to house maybe 3 or 5 red. Just wondering what the proper liter /hour pump that i should be looking for? Gonna run it on a sump.

QUOTE(chaos32 @ Jan 1 2020, 10:55 PM) Feeder fish can be a little dangerous at times especially goldfishes which seem to carry lots of disease and parasites. Thanks for the heads up, she's a picky one, does not take sw and mp ...I do quarantine and treat those feeder with malacite green + yellow powder few days before offering them to my aro. Btw ,just wondering do u guys practice gut loading? Such as feeding those feeder with high quality pallet before givin it to aro. |

hi bro, just sharing my aro development after 6 month of keeping from 7 incher to a 13+
Color just started to show last month, however it's just pale orange color spread on cheek and scale. Vid below taken while tanning with xl led light, no idea why its show pink in the video, on naked eye, everything looks white except the fish |

QUOTE(chaos32 @ May 11 2020, 03:51 PM) Good progress but the tank is too small. Small tanks don't just lead to stunted growth but also PLJ among other things. Please change tank if possible. Yes, it's abit to small, I'm actually quite surprise that she able to grow to this 13+ size in a 2.5 ft tank Anyway, most likely by end of the month will get a cheap 4x18"x18 or 422 to temporary house this fella until I settle with my other house. |

QUOTE(cybersim2 @ May 31 2020, 01:20 PM) Hi everyone! Just wondering most Arowana keeper use top filter, tricker filter or sump filter? Can share pros n cons? Tq Based on my understanding...top filter or canister No degassing, means oxygen exchange solely rely form saturated o2 available from your tank water. Requires aerator to promote aerobic bacteria growth and fish well being. When O2 not sufficient bacteria colony may got wipe out... hence the cloudy water syndrome when ever fresh tap water are introduce to tank during water change, sick fish, not to forget a acid generator if pre-filter are not clean periodically. Trickle filter. Provide some form of degassing, C02 are strip when water drip on medias, however it's subject to how the trickle box are design. If it's fully enclose then back to square one, a CO2 reactor. A properly design trickle box require a lot of ventilation. Another concept can be put to use is to have a fan sucking air out from bottom to top for promoting active O2 exchange, such type is known as counter air flow trickle. It introduce load of O2 on water which is beneficial to fish and bacteria colony. (I'm building one for my upcoming tank Old school sump, pretty much similar to top filter / canister if it's enclosed inside cabinet. The advantage is, 1) Space for load of peripherals, such as UV-C light, heater and etc. 2) Able to accommodate load of medias 3) Spot with very slow water flow or dead spot for anaerobic bacteria growth to keep nitrate in check. QUOTE(cybersim2 @ Jun 4 2020, 03:38 PM) Interesting !! DIY Trickle filter with fan. Sound like a Alienware casing. One thing i worry is ventilation required holes which will let to water splash. Try to design my own trickle filter using daiso stackable container. Haven't figure out how to solve the blocking in dripping pipe. Small fish/prawn blocking the holes. Anyone know where to buy transparent PVC pipes? Btw, may I know slow or fast water flow are good for bacteria growth ? Im still waitting my tank set + sump to be delivered before i can start to work on the trickle filter. My design something like a tall cube with vent hole below ,fan pulling air out from top of cube, also will be using a drip plate instead... Not gonna use drip pipe as it tend to clogs in low preasure return. |

QUOTE(homosapient @ Jun 24 2020, 04:54 PM) Hi Sifus, ouch the highlighted portion is your root cause. just want to get your opinion. i bough a 6inch Aro on March. i kept it in small aquarium. on May i bought a 3x1.5x1.5 aquarium and transferred the Aro. it was floating tail up for a day and then became normal. end of may i bought Dophin cf1400 and water quality became clear. i then start to change water about 30% every week and i will put some salt and 15ml of nutrafin and all went well. on 13th Jun i changed water same way then after a few days i saw there was brownish color alge like growth in the aquarium. i checked local shop they said its normal and asked to wash the tank and put some pleco. so last Saturday i bought 2 small pleco, 1 baby oscar + 1 red tail . i first used sponge to wipe the brown alge and stopped my filter and air buble. water was already brownish and i let it settle down for half hour. then i pumped out about 40% of water and fill up new water from tap. then i poured nutrafin 20ml and didn't put salt . then i released all then new fish also inside with the water. after few hour saw my ARO slow swim on top only with his mouth open and close. i suspected something wrong. Sunday morning i went to fish shop n they told me it could be because of chlorine so asked me to change half water and put in anticlorin and salt. i removed the water add salt + nutrafin 20ml and add water. ARO was still like that. evening about 5 pm on same day say aro already upside down stuck on my filter but still breathing. when i try to remove it it vomited blackish substance similar to alge. i moved it to small aquarium where i used to keep small karp for feeding. then after half hour later it died. but other fish in my tank all ok. my wife is very sad as this is our first ARO. so she now ask to buy new 1 since the tank looked empty. im trying to find what went wrong so same thing dont repeat. please advise. already plan to buy 7x2x2 tank next week for the ARO 1) scrub alge = your intention .. understand. 2) filtration off = When you scrub algae it cause the water to be full with fine particles which may degrade oxygen absorption from gill. Never turn off all your filtration while you are scrubbing. You have mechanical filter to filter out particle right ? use it, white wool media cost like RM2 per pack no ? It could cause ammonia spike as well.. pretty much a disaster in making. 3) half an hour =without any sort of pump /filter to maintain saturate oxygen, leaving your aro there with filthy water without any sort of oxygenation. Smaller tank are not that forgiving when it comes to dissolve oxygen not to forget you just scrub ya tank. 4) add new tap water = Your aro fate is seal here. Tap water practically have 0mg of dissolve oxygen. Chlorine further stress it out, Anti chlorine is not magic potion, it need time to works, it can be further enhance by aeration via power head or air pump. You may do more then 30% if you have aged oxygenated water. If you don't have aged water, use power head, modify power head to produce very fine / micro bubble, this will introduce more oxygen and assist to remove chlorine compound at a much faster rate. QUOTE(homosapient @ Jun 25 2020, 03:13 PM) Hi all, Width or deep minimum 2.5 ft for aro as suggested by most of our brothers here. Thanks for the input, didn't know so many things can go wrong. i wish not to repeat again. Ok now need some guide for my new tank setup. 1. i got a good deal for used tank. 7x2x2 is this good size for Aro? some advice to get width more like 7x3x3, 7x2.5x2.5 2. filtration system. can i use Canister filter or its sum tank 3. what else should i consider? below is what i planned. ![]() Go for sump, canister not gonna make it with such water volume. Example a 7x2x2 thats about 792 liter of water. Turn over rate for pump many may recommend minimum 10 time an hour which is a 7k lph pump. However slower flow pump may be more efficient as water stay in sump longer for bacteria to break down waste. If u had a smaller sump , you may want to start with a 4-6 times turn over an hour pump as starting point. 3. Lets talks about filtration medias. Do not ever fully loaded a compartment with corals unless u keep those cichlid type fish.. coral should be used sparingly as buffer. One or two cup is good enough to act as buffering agent for a period of time. Coral may hav bleach on it and dormant virus or pest. Wash it with tap water and follow up by rinsing it with boiling water before using. In general soft water is prefered for aro. Its all about surface area, get those high surface area ceramic tubes/ bacteria house/ lava rock, sintered glass ring, ceramic ring, ceramic bead. You might want to skip those fancy moving bed k1 medias ...its pratically useless in a 1.5L coke bottle, effective surface area 500 sq meter for 1000 liter of k1. That amount of media alone require a 2000 liter sump to work. Mt lotus root have about 1.1k m2 surface area per pcs with a very small foot print. The more the better? Well more media not necessary bad, there's actually journals on surface area calculation based on feeding rate. But hey, as a hobbiest we always want more lol. Compartment 1 mechanical, 2nd compartment any high surface area media is good enough. 3rd compartment i usually like to jam pack it with smaller sized media to promote anerobic bacteria. Incase u had a small sump, may want to look into a secondary pump to divert water from 4th compartment back to 2nd compartment or a bypass piping from main return pump. Happy aro keeping. QUOTE(chaos32 @ Jun 25 2020, 05:39 PM) I don’t use sumps so no chance to try. Would be interesting to see the longevity of the material long term. There are quite a few very good media’s out there but they tend to crumple after a few years of use. When I use to use K1 in sumps, hated them. Mt material pretty solid , wont crumble easily like those cheap rm 2 bio rod. Those cheap rod.. no need to wait for years... after 2 week of usage it feels soft and crumble on its own. I did have k1, was recommended by a friend 4-5 years ago, but i use it as trickle filter media for my 100L gold fish tub. Been running it wet dry for years, quite ok. Crystal clear water as well.
