Hi All Sifus,
I'm interested to get one red arowana. I notice that there'are few types of red arowana.
May I know what is the suitable type and size for beginner like me ?

QUOTE(chaos32 @ Aug 14 2018, 09:54 PM) Only one type of red - Super Red which is then subcategories to Blood Red and Chili Red. Everything else is branding. No beginner type. Reds require patience, genetics and skill as well as some luck. No such thing as cheap and good. You pay for the quality. What's the different between Blood & Chilli Red ? Planning to buy 5/6" size. What's the aspect they I need to look at when choosing the fish ? |

QUOTE(chaos32 @ Jun 20 2019, 12:28 PM) The Xian Long tanning light works well albeit its soft tanning. Its fine at a year old but do take your time and start with a few hours a day gradually increasing in the span of weeks. Every individual fish reacts differently so observation is key. If the fish stops eating, it's normal behaviour. Where can I get this Xian Long tanning light online ?How bout small fish like 4 inch ? Sufficient to use T5 pink lamp ? Will the tank temperature rise up if use light with UV and UVA ? |

Anyone know how to cure a frightened arowana ? Used to be quite steady but get scared by my kid few days ago. Any movement near the tank, she will go crazy jumping and dashing fast. I already avoid switching on the light for few days.

QUOTE(Kent666 @ Sep 8 2019, 12:08 AM) What is your arowana size? Try add on some tankmates, and cover up blue or white ( for 5inch - 14inch arowana ) for both side ( left and right glass ) 6 inches. Already cover all sides. Sometimes she calm sometimes just easily frighten. She have 2 inch indon tigers as tankmates |

I though sump filter have better filtration rate because the volume of water it hold is larger than trickle filter. Can anyone recommend good filter media. Thx

QUOTE(nicotine @ Jun 3 2020, 08:50 PM) Based on my understanding... Interesting !! DIY Trickle filter with fan. Sound like a Alienware casing. One thing i worry is ventilation required holes which will let to water splash.top filter or canister No degassing, means oxygen exchange solely rely form saturated o2 available from your tank water. Requires aerator to promote aerobic bacteria growth and fish well being. When O2 not sufficient bacteria colony may got wipe out... hence the cloudy water syndrome when ever fresh tap water are introduce to tank during water change, sick fish, not to forget a acid generator if pre-filter are not clean periodically. Trickle filter. Provide some form of degassing, C02 are strip when water drip on medias, however it's subject to how the trickle box are design. If it's fully enclose then back to square one, a CO2 reactor. A properly design trickle box require a lot of ventilation. Another concept can be put to use is to have a fan sucking air out from bottom to top for promoting active O2 exchange, such type is known as counter air flow trickle. It introduce load of O2 on water which is beneficial to fish and bacteria colony. (I'm building one for my upcoming tank Old school sump, pretty much similar to top filter / canister if it's enclosed inside cabinet. The advantage is, 1) Space for load of peripherals, such as UV-C light, heater and etc. 2) Able to accommodate load of medias 3) Spot with very slow water flow or dead spot for anaerobic bacteria growth to keep nitrate in check. Try to design my own trickle filter using daiso stackable container. Haven't figure out how to solve the blocking in dripping pipe. Small fish/prawn blocking the holes. Anyone know where to buy transparent PVC pipes? Btw, may I know slow or fast water flow are good for bacteria growth ? |

Plan to buy a bigger tank for my arowana. Problem is the only suitable place to put this new tank is the existing tank location. Not sure how I can safely transfer my aro to this new tank. Any idea guy?

QUOTE(chaos32 @ Jun 24 2020, 03:43 PM) U mean to say u would have to move your old tank and then install the new one and the fish will be temporary displaced? Yes. Not sure can shift the existing tank to a temporary place. After that setup new tank with sump filter. How long need to take before can transfer the aro to new tank ? |

QUOTE(chaos32 @ Jun 24 2020, 10:10 PM) Here is an idea. If you are in good terms with a LFS, they may temporary house the Aro for you while you cycle the tank. There is no hard and fast rule cycling new tanks. If you can get the bacteria culture up and running it could take 2 weeks maybe more. Take your used media out of what ever filter you are using and introduce it as seed to hasten the cycle. The key is to keep testing the chemistry of the tank till you get a low and constant reading. If the Aro is the only occupant, there will be less “stress” on the new tank. Good ideas. Let me talk to LFS first. My only worry is housing my Aro there will expose it to new bacteria and water parameter. 2 weeks is a long time. I saw ppl using PSB by pouring it into the sump filter. Anyone have experience ?QUOTE(harvin6 @ Jun 24 2020, 10:36 PM) Can be done. Usually the fuys will bring a holding tank ans transfer your fishes then setup the new tank with existing media so you wont have any issues with nitrogen cycle. Ones done they will transfer back. All done in matter or few hours. Thanks bro. Currently using top trickle filter but I don't think the media is enough to fill the larger sump tank. Can I buy new media and dump it inside existing aquarium and let it settle for few weeks before the new tank come? |

MT got Gen 1, 2 & 3. Improvement to the surface areas come with a price. I saw ppl buying truck load of MT for their koi ponds. Must have cost a fortune !
I'm using Taiwan GAE bio ball. Plenty of bootleg version out there. Any good recommendation for mechanical filter on compartment 1 ? |

Very informative video Harvin. Great job. Keep it up ! Just wondering does the overflow pipe have very loud noise ? I found few solution on Youtube but my LFS doesn't recommend it bcoz they said it will easily get clogged. They also recommend another design of sump tank as shown on the attached photo. Anyone know what's the different compare to sump tank with narrow partition?
