Can someone teach me how to prime a caister filter?
I'm using Taiyo 1200.
I filled up the canister with water, and locked the motor head on. The motor is running but it's not sucking water from the tank into the canister.

QUOTE(arrow @ Apr 30 2012, 05:58 PM) first things to check , are you plugin the inlet tube in the the right place ?(inlet tube wrongly plug into outlet slot). I did that sometimes After reading so many online "how to prime a canister filter" questions, I realized that the in and out valves were closed.. and did you using chiller ? My eheim 2213 need clear out the air in the canister first before she can push water through the chiller and back to the tank(reason is my canister is underpowered). I thought it was for locking the pipes... =_= The canister filter is working perfectly now. By the way, does anyone know where I can get clear polycarbonate pipes? Planing to make a few rain bars. |

QUOTE(arrow @ Apr 30 2012, 07:29 PM) I bought it second hand for RM 100, still in very good condtion. The specs: Taiyo 1200 1200L/hour I'm using it for my 2.5ft tank. It's rather powerful. It'd be suitable for a 3ft tank. I plan to get another one. The motor runs very quietly. |

QUOTE(jctasoga @ Apr 30 2012, 08:37 PM) Taiyo is a good brand. i'm using the 1000 for my 4ft tank. can clean but its a slower cycle la.. 1200CF model is better and you can adjust the out valve to suit the waterflow if you find it too powerful. even my 1000CF i find it very strong and creates big currents at the top.... I initially did try pressing very hard on the circular knob(?). On the Taiyo website it said it was called a priming valve and it can be pressed. I tried pressing but nothing happened. So I didn't try any further in case it broke or got damaged. rm100 is a very good buy indeed. i bought my 1000cf for rm120 but is new la... if you cant get the canister to pump water, you can manually 'start' it my pressing VERY hard on the taiyo brand on the top of canister. it will suck the water in. but like arrow said, please don't plug in the wrong inlet and outlet on the canister.... rainbars can be bought at LFS but i don't know how u r going to split the 1 outlet to multiple outlets to the rainbar(s)... How much will a new Taiyo 1200 cost? Planing to get another one. My fish keeps damaging the submersible pump's power head. As for the rain bars, I went to all the LFS in Puchong but none sells them. One LFS said that they can order it, but it's going to be very costly. So I thought I'd make my own. Just need a clear tube and drill some holes in it. |

QUOTE(jctasoga @ Apr 30 2012, 10:11 PM) oh.. tat one called priming valve.. quite high tech name.. hihi.. Does your priming valve move when you press it? Nothing happens to mine. Maybe it's stuck. its like starting engine... need multiple times. it can be frustrating so remember to turn the inlet and outlet valve to "stop" or "shut" position when you are cleaning your filter. it makes it easier to start the unit. its very noisy if the water doesn't flow through the filter but once it start running... fuh... silent all the way... And thanks for the tip. It was noisy when I first started the pump. I thought it was faulty but after the water began flowing, it was silent. QUOTE(jctasoga @ Apr 30 2012, 10:11 PM) This kind of fish:» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « This one bit the wiring but luckily the electrical leak was minor. I have another smaller one that carries sand in its mouth and makes a small mountain on the submersible pump's head. The sand got sucked into the filter head and destroyed the propeller. The smaller fish spoilt 3 pump heads and the bigger fish has spoilt one (as it is in a bigger tank, the filter head also cost quite a bit =_=) QUOTE(jctasoga @ Apr 30 2012, 10:11 PM) rainbars yes you need to custom make if you can't find anything suitable. maybe those white PVC is enough? grey ones look a bit untidy... after u make the rainbars, then u need to get the clips and suction cup to hold the rainbars... quite headache actually... Yes, I do like DIY. And tomorrow would be a perfect day for it The grey ones are...unsightly. I did think of using that at first but then... no. Not a nice view for the tank. Maybe I'll use a clear hose and melt holes into it. It'd be like a flexible rain bar. The only problem would be closing off the end part. |

QUOTE(LuQEE @ Apr 30 2012, 11:36 PM) can try putting the water pump above the substrate? Hahahhaha! Looks like your tilapia and my knifefish can be very good friends. I checked online to see if the fish is stressed but I didn't come across anything. Perhaps its their hobby. my tilapia just broke my 2k L/h pump last week by putting those substrate in it by trying to bury the pump, now i just stick the pump on the glass very far away from the substrate.. The pump in its tank is about 6 inches above the substrate, but it still can manage to spoil it. That fish is just... I dunno. It is bent on destroying power heads I set up the canister filter for its tank. So far, it inspected the outlet suction head but didn't do anything. Perhaps there is no flat surface for it to built small hills of sand, so its ignoring the piping. |

Yeah, it'd be nice to know there are other girls who like aquatics. If they were to decom, I would definately buy from them. oh yeah, about the priming valve, if you press hard enough, it will be 'looser next time'. its a bit hard to press after long time no use i guess... QUOTE(LuQEE @ May 1 2012, 09:54 AM) my second tank is a predator planted tank la haha People don't do predator planted tank because the fish can be a real rascal and uproot everything. I tried with cambomba, the fish not only uprooted it, it tore the plants to pieces (almost clogging the filter head). But I would like to make a planted tank with only grass (I don't know what the grass/plant is called). It'd be like a field with one big fish in the tank. i wonder why not many ppl do a predator planted tank, now i know why Question: Can I use sand as substrate for planting? Example, I plant the grass in the sand and supplement with liquid fertliser and other minerals. Is it possible? |

It hides behind the pump head all day, and only comes out at night when it is dark. I think that's when it commited the murder. |

QUOTE(arrow @ May 8 2012, 02:10 PM) Indeed , RM20 whole set(Light set, deco , internal pump & terra tank), first day was at 50% off from RM174.90 normal price, almost brought it that day, lucky didn't , last days when they told me twenty only i don't believe it, i ask 2 more staff to confirm. Just brought 2 set. Yeah, I got your PM, but wasn't so free at that time. I thought of going on the last day, but then changed my mind. Then I saw your RM 20 tank... so regretful now. I'll wait for the next sales then. But it took me almost 45min to disinfect and polish the tank clean. I think i PM you to go on the first day. Try ask NA at Subang SS19 for the custom tank. Talk to the boss mr.yee , not the aunty. |

QUOTE(yweising @ May 8 2012, 11:21 PM) i believe every1 also can make it if the tank is kept in the middle room of a big house without any direct sunlight to any part of the room, eg. like the underground room, even with a single fan u will feel like an aircond room Errr.. typical Malaysian homes don't have underground rooms. Mine is also in the living room, that's why I found it strange. How can the temperature drop to 25C just by fan. Usually, fan only reduces the temperature 1 -2 C only. Is it aquarium fan + living room fan, or just living room fan alone? |

I read the comments above and deduced this:
Water evaporation = cooled tank ? But don't you guys feel like it's very troublesome to top up the evaporated water every day, especially if the water loss is 2 - 5 litres per day? In one week it would be 14 - 35 L water used up. @_@ Is there a method to prevent water loss while using the fan? (On extremely hot days, I drop a block of ice into my 3ft tank to cool my fish down. Trying to find a different method.) |

QUOTE(ciohbu @ May 9 2012, 12:20 PM) Water evaporation = cooled tank, partly correct... water evaporate with heat, that's why it will lower ur tank temp I guess the least troublesome method would be to use a chiller. But then again, chillers don't come cheap.same theory why u sweat well. u can get a auto refill machine if u got extra budget =P no hobby is simple and 100% no maintenance ice will cause sudden shock to ur fish/shrimps and also plants, temp suddenly drop and rise back... I thought of something like this: ![]() Water evaporates, condenses, flows back into the tank. Like a rain cycle. Could it work? |

QUOTE(ciohbu @ May 9 2012, 01:06 PM) it will work if the outside of ur glass is COOLER than inside.. if no condensation will not happen Where do you buy the acrylic sheet from? but u can use a piece of glass/acrylic like that to minimize the water lost, thats what i do with my tank, cover the front half with acrylic, let the other half with fan open cover half also save my tank from dust and insects QUOTE(jctasoga @ May 9 2012, 01:06 PM) condensation is meant to bring the heat away from the tank. you're just introducing it back to the water to make it warmer... my thought only... I thought of covering only half the tank. covering the tank will make the tank warmer as the warm air is trapped inside the aquarium. this is what i believe is happening to my covered aquarium. i opened up the hood covers so that condensation will not happen... but i still loosing water at a slower rate of 2-3 liters per week. temp around 28-29c no fan and a 4ft tank. So, half of the evaporated water condenses and returns to the tank, the other half simply evaporates into the atmosphere. |

Everyone's into DIY chillers now » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « http://www.3reef.com/forums/i-made/diy-chiller-42547.html I'd like to learn more too. I like DIY-ing things. And that chiller (fridge), how did they drill a hole into it? I was thinking of doing this before, but my dad said "Don't be stupid." I am persisting on being stupid because a second hand chiller (fridge) is a lot cheaper than a second hand aquarium chiller. Plus, I could move the frozen blood worms out of my mom's freezer. Do you use aquarium sealant to seal the tubings in place so as not to let the cold air from the fridge escape? Is there a more detailed diagram of how it is done? |
