it is actually a coil of spring of about 6mm in dia.with claw like head... when you turn the dial(at the end), the spring(snake) turn round and round making the claw turn as well capturing/hook any debries etc then you pull it back
The coil thing works only sometimes with loose objects.You have to determine whether the problem is with the main pipe. If it is, the upstairs and downstairs neighbours would have the same problem.
If not, go to the neighbour's kitchen downstairs to clear the blockage from the floor trlap.
