I think it's clear.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diode#Over-voltage_protection

It's to protect the circuit so it never go beyond the 5v spec of the pi
*
It looks like its to protect against reverse polarity.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

BTW, I'm planning to build this circuit (minus the transformer parts).
That's why I'm asking.

D1 is to protect against short circuit for the Voltage regulator.
D2 is to protect against short circuit for the input to Rpi.
You can use 1N4001, but 1N4008 has a higher rating.

Why are you planning to build this circuit without the transformer?
*
Stepping down from 9V adapter.
My previous Samsung 5V 0.7A adapter didn't work properly.
Same with 1A from Vztech USB hub and 2A adapter from media player.
Reading fluctuating voltage at TP1/TP2.
On one adapter pendrive kept getting mounted and unmounted.
On other occasions USB keyboard also went dead in mid use (works on PC).

Thanks for info about D1 & D2.
Can't find 1N4008 so I bought the 1N4007

the samsung original travel adapter is actually quite good and stable for my use. try to replace the cable. the microusb connector got faulty sometime.
*
Actually tried 3 Samsung adapter - two with its own attached cable one with separate microUSB cable.
Two USB cables tried with same result.
Of the Vztech and media player adapter plugged into Vztech adapter and fed power via microUSB cable one of them gave wildly fluctuating voltage reading (can't remember which - wrote down somewhere).
Vztech hub cut 5V line to give no backfeed via Pi USB ports.

So, I thought I'd build a regulator circuit to rule out power supply problems.

Why this circuit diagram so complex...

Actually... to make the circuit simple, the LM7805 itself will output 5V without any other components...

Those capacitors like 2200uF, 100nF and 10nF are just filtering capacitors to smooth the noise on the circuit..

The rest are for just for protection purposes...
*
I understand how the regulation and filtering parts work. I just didn't get the how and the why the protection parts are supposed to work rclxub.gif

Yup! You've gotta design and build your own microchips too. tongue.gif

I think amazinggrace was just unclear on the concept of open source.

And I was pulling his leg when I replied:- whistling.gif

Any one here want to really overkill on the cooling?
Try full submersion cooling like the mineral oil method.
Or for kick-ass bragging rights use Fluorinert from 3M instead.

This one uses 3M Novec 7000 for cooling
Just watch the CPU boil!

Bought my DVI-HDMI gold-plated cable from Ebay for USD4.25

Probably just gold colouring but at 4.25 can't complain. smile.gif
Works great.

Yeah... what to do?

Btw, I had turned it into NAS + transmission. So far so good albeit knowing the USB stack issue. I have no qualms about it.

Btw, the case is really Adafruit one. LOL

What stack issue?

How to RMA with Element14?

My Pi which I got last November has never really worked properly, something I put down to the power supply I used (two Samsung h/p 0.7A, one Samsung tablet 2A, two no name 1A & 2A)
Finally built my own and still getting no more than 4.4V at TP1/TP2. (It slowly drops to 4.2 when it starts rebooting)
Checked resistance of F3 polyfuse and got a whopping 1.6 Ohm.

How to RMA?

I once had the polyfuse blown and it takes a long time to recover... once recovered, everything was back to normal...
*
It's been nearly two months since I last tried it out and the behaviour is the same only this time I'm using my own PSU.
I only measured the F3 resistance this time around.

What did you do to blow your fuse?

no need RMA la,straight desolder the fuse and short them together,0 ohm  rclxms.gif  but no protection la~go get switching PSU,can adjust voltage(0.x Volt)
*
And what if there is a fault somewhere else that caused the fuse resistance to go high in the first place?
Better to RMA.

Original question above - how?

Just email them. Explain in detail about your problem. Some photos will help.
Then they will investigate and if they decide to accept your claim, they will arrange collection of your Pi from you.

Thanks.

X-rated Pi!
It was inevitable I guess. blush.gif
But it does nothing for the guy unless he's a voyeur.

I wonder what the people at the Raspberry Pi Foundation makes of it.

Can someone explain to me what T&D and FO means (you can PM is it's too ahem, ahem... whistling.gif )

Well, my Pi has been collected by GDex late yesterday.
Now waiting for my replacement.

The GDex dispatch guy couldn't find my house and just left it at that.
No calls, nothing.
They seem to be too cheap to make calls.
Same with delivery.
Any one got this problem or is it just this local branch?
