There's a gap between the top of the radiator and till the start of the air guide/cover. This will be the turbulent air zone, which in theory reduces the cooling capacity. Unless of course u can install the cover to minimize the height of the Z height like that shown in your drawing.
Any cooling gains at most is marginal. We're not running our engines super hot, nor are we running in 50C ambient temp. Ive been running mine for some time, i dont see temp spike.
Jack was also running without the cover for a while as well.
The cover serves a few purpose :
1) Looks neat

2) Concentrates cold air from front into the radiator (there is also a fan behind sucking in air)
3) Prevent hot air from engine to flow to the front of radiator when car is stationary (hot air goes up, to the hood cover, eventually finds its way into front radiator which its fan will then suck in the air). So if there is a cover, hot air will not reach the front part).
4) Your engine compartment will not be so dirty, your fan/alternator belts will not get dirty too. A dirty engine is a stressed one. Owner also will stress looking at dirty engine as compared to clean one. Go tt show ppl also paiseh if dirty.
