QUOTE(tsk83 @ Jun 3 2012, 11:53 AM)
Hi All,

I am looking for a good MTB in the range of RM3k or below if possible (might be able to stretch to 3.5k). I was initially under the impression that the bikes were cheaper but when I went around surveying the prices caught me off guard!

I'll be using this bike to go to work (the office is about 10 mins away; up hill and straight roads), for easy/medium difficulty trails with friends and also for long distance rides around Putrajaya or cities.

Any suggestions on the bikes and where I can get them at cheaper prices?
*
you want cheap buy 2nd hand.

you want it cheaper, be prepared to wait and buy the components slowly

I bought everything separately. Took me nearly 2 years. What can I say I can be patient. 25 something lb hardtail for under 2k. I was lucky because I scored a brand new rock Show Fork 140mm for 3 figures from a nice rich kid, I remembered they ysed to cost about 1500 new from the shops.

It hit the current cost because I 'upgraded' to Mavic Crossride.

The Spec.

-Scott DJ frame (xtinct edition)

-Bars and stem from the original frame ( have to upgrade since the bars too short and the stem you can use it to rebuild a bridge)

-Sram X-7 9 speed new.

-Bengal brakes new (going to upgrade the disc to 200mm in front and 180mm at the back soon)

-Ciplak seat (waiting for a good deal to come up Gobi XM is favored)

-Tyre's ciplak roadies with Maxxis Detonators as backup. MTB tyre are the ones that came on the old Scott frame.

Love the bike accept for the seat and bar. Again I would say I am damn lucky with the forks since I beat several bus loads of scalpers.

Did you ask for a discount when looking for a bike ? A lot of shop owners are too self absorbed to provide good customer service, so good luck to you if you are going to buy from a shop.

Someone was looking to try out a 56cm frame....I have a Trek 1000 (1992). PM me if you are still interested. Its not a racer. laugh.gif ...bring a spanner for your clip ons. The bike is still rocking oldskool Look's. word of warning the tyres are iffy. sweat.gif if you are worried you can bring your rim set. I can fit a 130mm rim down there its actually a 126mm spread.

nice find drool.gif

and yes muck from all over about the brake that is. if they are going to so much trouble why not just electrify the brakes.....rare magnet brakes. just thought of it sweat.gif or magnetic hydraulic brakes. the latter would be easier to control. Di2 + doh.gif

I have seen him using a notebook on his glass counter top, though I have been there only twice in the AM.

Anyways it is just an assumption (no ass no u no me, just a word) that he is trolling in the MTB thread. This one has lost the habit of confronting ppl nowadays, this one must be getting old. sweat.gif

I am getting close to collecting all the parts I need for an upgrade so I need some advice, I am in Wangsa area.. need safe place to do intervals. A million years ago when I was a roadie MRR2 was lined with trees, today its crowded with idiot drivers and lined with carcasses of what once was.

Best Motoring... that is why...
i wont recommend a size personally from height and inseam measurements as all frame geometries are different...

you have to try out different sizes to see what fits you properly as some people has long torso or freakish long arms which will require a longer effective top tube length and some people the other way round despite both being simillar in height...

inseam alone pretty much determines the crank to saddle length and does nothing much to help bike sizing...

of course there is a standard guide based on height and inseam if you look on the net... but that only serves as a rough guide and you will have to size it up or down depending on how you feel on the bike...
*
yeah, I thought as much and we are after all in Malaysia (small market, I still wonder why shop owners choose not to educate the potential buyer) no test rides plus I am a broke. not a very good combination.

The frame in question that I was going to buy

Nippon catalogue

Geometry

last choice is to upgrade old 1992 Trek 1000 (>50km) which I have already acquired the parts for accept for BB, 1" threadless headset, stem/bar and 1" steerer CF fork.

do you need cadence sensor? if yes, go with polar. if no, go with sigma.

i have polar cs200cad, was difficult to set up the first time. had to really get the position/distance between head unit and sensors correct. you can throw away the manual.

the downside of CS200, the speed and cadence sensors are sealed, so you can't replace its battery. on paper, it's good for 3500 hours. but, actual might be less. the speed sensor is RM1xx. HR strap and head unit batteries can be replaced.

brain was focusing on works... non-stop updates figures....

Where u saw the bike? i got my bike @ Subang Bike Tech Shop.... are you see-ing the bike at same place as me???
*
nah JBS wangsa maju. the bike (50-ish cm frame) feels ligther then the CAAD 10. not sure what the ride is like. I am coming from a full no name steel frame down tube shifting (love, yes I am that ancient), and a full alloy frame (dun like).

One thing I didnt like was the proprietary seatpost and the stick insect ball mashing Fizik seat.

Dont mind sharing the price you got it at ?.

post edit.....

what figures....auditioning figures of lingerie models ? sweat.gif sweat.gif

aiyoh.. apa diflens? dun tell me bad ass is an ass that went bad?

mark cavendish is either proving that he is a real bad ass / badass (see miaopurr, now i'm confused)... or he is really annoyed by journalist dishing out obviously stupid questions...

either way... my most favorite confrontational interview of all times...

lance vs kimmage...

Lance: you are not worth that chair that you are sitting in...

i didn't know until i watch the video that a person sitting in a chair has to be worth it before squeezing his pimpled ass onto a chair...

i must be only worthy of sitting on a 3V pvc chair then?

i so want to climb through your monitor and stab your fish balls with a knife now...
it's a shop almost facing a big empty lot... yellow sign board... can't miss it... you will see it jus as you are sligtly veering left along the street...
get the rotor 3D cranks too... you should see it hit 7.5KGs... or so i think...
*
I would be running an 'L' sized frame.....doubt it would be any where near 7.8kg.

Plus I would replace the new groupset with a barely used one to sell. might even sell the rims sweat.gif since I have a brand new set of Fulcrum training wheels.

Whats the damage with the 3D rotors anyway ? .

BUTTHEAD

Lance handled the news con like THE MAN. Until you have suffered in a competition with your 'competitors' one would not have the understanding of the camaraderie among 'men'/women/people/genral public/half breeds/inbreds etc etc.

yes, yes and yes..........

I weigh 240lbs and if any of the spokes are even slightly out of tune...... I will hear a ping or twang before it breaks. Safe to say its cheaper to replace the R7s then the xero's.

I will pass on the 3D rotors.....oval rings are still in....interesting.

The Giant as is...is already plenty light from where I am coming from. My old steel framed bike is lighter then the alu Trek (bout 22lbs or more)

My experience moving from my old steel bike to a more modern alu frame was frightening, so much so the Trek stayed in after less then 10km's ride. And I was on a second set of Araya's on the steelie.

Swapping in a second hand set of current model 105 grouppo for new is from a terrible habit of saving which I earned from starving when I was younger.

The purchase is not set in stone, my mind wanders.....KHS....POLYGON...MTB?....as is I am just really worried about the ride more then anything. Anyone know any 'local' forums that can shed more light on this ?

As you can see I am a hopeless data hoarder....cannot move forward without enough data.

....

I read about Lance by chance when he was just starting out without a team. He had the highest recorded tolerance of lactic acid in North America.

.....

The doc outfit guy, I would have clocked him sooner then later. How is one able to tell the road with the crowd ?

QUOTE(butthead @ Jul 8 2012, 09:30 PM)
as far as i can tell you... the R7s isn't exactly the most reliable wheel out there... i own a pair of the 1st gen ones which uses the j-turn spokes.. the current one uses a straight pull one... and i broke hell lots of drive side spokes without much reasons... if you are worried about wheel reliability... i suggest you get a pair of 32-spoke set with mavic open pro... a properly build set of wheels will last very long up till the rims wear out...

was jokin about the rotors... it's not for most people...

i dunno how much you can save by swapping a 2nd hand set of 105 grouppo..and you risk it havin unforeseeable problems... i am not saying you need to build the most perfect bike in the world... but saving money this way might not be too worth it in the long run...

furthermore,  if you take a look how much a set of 2nd hand 105 costs in BBS and how much you think you can sell it it making a profit swapping a new for 2nd hand group... that's like saying buying a brand new vios and swapping in an engine lantai from the chop shop so you can sell your new one for a profit...

that is the reason lance adopted the high cadence methods after he recovered from his chemo after teaming up with michele ferrari...
i dun see newspaper la... wah...RM150 for 2 hours... enough for my day's meals for 3 weeks adi...

the newspaper let people post things like that meh... some of them sound utterly indecent leh..."can choose girl"

errr... i got no knowledge about shades except i did own a pair of rudy project back in before 2000s... for only a 100 bucks... i didn't know what it was until i saw jan ullrich wearing it during his deutsch telekom days...

those shades must costs more at least 500 bucks nowadays... sibeh expensive...
*
O_O on the R7s, maybe I should sell those too.......anyone tried the made in sillypore SOUL ?

the groupset....only the BB is sticking (which I freed up with some silicone spray) but I doubt I can use it or want to use it since it is cheap to replace.

the rest of the items albeit with some cosmetic scratches they look ok......gigi masih baik =P , chain is tight as should be, mechs ummmm as mechs should be.

BBS prices up and down, 2nd hand off of new bike price is about RM1100 to 1200, new new set ..there is one nut job asking for RM1900 something. Not sure whats what in the shops.

What la enjin lantai.......put celica 1.8 enjin mah....manual gearbox mah....then get Robbisport suspension for it mah...then..... icon_question.gif

FYI I dont have my legs....yet. Doing squats to bring back it to 10% of their former glory. And die of lactic burn after 5 minutes doh.gif
