yes this method works. I updated mine to ICS CE this way.
Added on August 28, 2012, 2:03 amcomparing the Xperia P and Xperia Ray, for me the Ray seems to have a louder sound. However, the P itself is already quite loud.
Important is to choose a proper ring tone so you can hear it clearly.
I see.. so far I've never tried any Xperia Ray yet, But I know Neo V without XLoud ringing is loud enough for me... By the way how's XP camera compared to ray?? Battery life? I heard coming ICS going to make XP battery life 4X longer...
I've tried to select ring tone that going out loud, and those ringtone is ridiculously Loud on my W995 until I only have to turn 70% of the volume only, But having the same ringtone on my Vivaz, even at Max volume its still so soft until I always missed my call! can't even compared to my previous W995 on 50% volume!!

for me P is already too loud for me. with Xlaud on there is some buzziness when having max volume. but tat is overkill. around 70% is speaker is very loud already.
Can you clarify a bit on the "Buzziness"? It seems like Xperia P is back to my option again!

Just wondering why GSMarena says the ringing volume is low and makes me worry
