To built it on my own... too complicated... not good with brick and cement....

With guppy there will be no mosquito. I have many guppy in my pond. They survive side by side with the koi. Koi eat no small fish.

for lily to grow well you still need some form of a filter system. The fountain itself has a pump. with some modification you can use the fountain pump for a simple filtration. The aeration of the fountain itself helps in the purification of the pool due to introduction of oxygen where bacteria will grow and survive with lot of oxygen in the water and purify the (waste) water. Do take note that it is not the guppy poo that polute the water, it is other micro organism like algae, soil, etc that live in the water you cannot see. Just do not over feed the fish make sure they finish the food and everything will be ok as nature that care of itself.

Do not under estimate the air/oxygen it is the greatest help in purifying the water. Just look at some of the sewage pond in some housing estate where they use some kind of turning wheel disturbing the water in such a way that it introduces lot of air into the water and help grow the good bacteria. The sewage plant/pool usually they get rid (filtered) as much solid waste before introduce it to the pond and then to the river.

Added on February 18, 2012, 12:54 amThe root of the lily will fill the plastic pond and no space for any others. You got to cut and clear it from time to time otherwise it will no grow flowers.

Purified water contain lot of nirate which is food for your lily. Do not add fertiliser, it will kill the guppy and your lily as well, too salty. The poo from fish and other micro organism after being purified by the bacteria is the best food for your lily.

Added on February 18, 2012, 12:35 pmDigging was not a problem. It is easy with fork (see pix), no much effort even rocks and stones come out easy. The work was putting it in the bags and transporting it to dispose that take much time and effort.

nice pond. btw, can recommend a reliable pump for the pond?

This is a Viper pump china made, cheap and reliable, low power consumption, run 24/7, maintenance free last yrs after yrs. RM450 when I bought it many yrs ago. A similar Tsurumi pump, Japan made and now produce in china has everything similar but breakdown after 1 yr, my experience.

Your pond is big and deep. Can use for 2in1? Fish pond and swimming pool?

Yes, can swim with the fish...if you don't mind a fishy swimming pool that is.

I can imagine it's so nice and soothing to have a pond like that. But one has to be prepared to put in the hard work maintaining it, no?
I find it difficult just to maintain the garden - the plants, shrubs and the lawn.

I was thinking the same about swiming pool too and also before I build I also thought if one day I am tired of the fish I can convert it into a swiming pool but swimming pool need longer and wider space and preferably a rectangular one. I have the space for the minimum swimming pool but that will take up most of the garden space I have.

For a mimimum to do lap excercise is 5' x 40' which is only good for 1 person. My fish pond is 5' x 15'. For a fun pool preferble to have a square one something like with a minimum width of 15 feet. so that few ppl can get in together. To really have a meaningful pool is to have a pool that can do lap and fun. That is to have a narrow lap lane of 40 feet and one end with the width of 15 feet and same time to have solar water heater suppling hot water during evening swim, as this is the time you go to the pool. For this size it take up most of my garden space. My garden is large at the back and narrow at front.

I ended up giving up swimming pool and have a half 8 pond in front portion of the house.

Added on February 20, 2012, 11:05 amYes, maintaining a garden is not easy. there are so many wild grass to pull and clear everyweek on the lawn. If you miss and not maintening it in for few months it will be out of control. You got to fertilise and water the plants otherwise there will be no flowers.

The pond need to be maintain as well cleaning the filter once every 3 months or so and sieving out debris everyweek. Not forgetting feeding the fish and sometimes the fish get sick when you introduce new fish without quarantine. But other time it is pleasurable to sit by the pond and visitors come admiring what you have and make the garden more meaningful instead of just an extra land space. With it many of my friends go after houses with land. Unfortunately most semi D came with only 10 feet land which has no meaning. 15 feet is perfectly nice. Too big a space you cannot maintain and keep up and became a burden. When it is very big it is better to build pergola taking up some of the space and these spaces need little maintenance. Plant trees but to keep up with leaves. One tree will do to shade the hot afternoon sun and row of bamboo to shade morning or evening sun. Otherwise the garden is hot like desert.

Where can get this pump. Is this low noise ?

No noise at all. Hardly hear any noise. The noise it produces is from the vibration of the pipes connected to it and of course the noise of water moving.

To test the noise is to put the pump in water on a solid ground with no pipe and on it. You will hear no noise, not from the water or pump. When you connect it to the pipe and if there is noise it has to do with the pipe that produces noise.

Many koi seller have this pump but to get the best price go to Jalan Pasar KL. Here is the map of a half shop selling fish, marine fish as well and equipment.

yr fish pond if dowan to get greeen algae color then dont expose to the sun ... else get a uv filter that is approriate to yr pond size

mine is square 20ft x 4 ft x 4 ft height ... fully green color ... but then i put soon hok, patin, talapia, catfish inside

With properly designed pond and good filtration you will not have green floating algae. My pond is expose to sun most of the day.

Just wanted to share my small pond for 2 koi fish I have, had it for almost 2 months now. The pond is pre-fabricated. Not much issue except algae, don’t know how to get rid of them
