I've read reports that the FA were planning on dropping this rule, but there was no news that this is being implemented. Is this confirmed and implemented by the FA now?

Scholes sits out training

Paul Scholes was a notable absentee from Manchester United training on Wednesday, as the club stepped up their Europa League preparations.

The Red Devils will welcome Athletic Bilbao to Old Trafford on Thursday for the first leg of their last 16 showdown.

Scholes looks set to miss that encounter after sitting out training, but he was expected to be rested anyway after being involved in Sunday's Premier League victory over Tottenham.

Fellow midfielder Tom Cleverley was in attendance at Carrington, hinting at a potential comeback after his recent ankle injury.

Chris Smalling also seemed to have recovered from the cut head he sustained on England duty last week.

There was no sign of Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia trained on his own as he continues his recovery from a hamstring strain.

Meanwhile, youngster Paul Pogba was training with the reserves who were not involved in last night's second-string encounter with West Brom, further fuelling reports he has agreed to join Juventus in the summer.

David de Gea says criticism has helped him at Manchester United

David de Gea has revealed the criticism he endured in his early days at Manchester United has inspired him to prove his critics wrong.

A high-profile error against Manchester City in the Community Shield, followed by several unconvincing displays, led to the Spaniard being dropped.

"The criticism I received only served to make me a stronger person," he said.

"The time I spent on the bench helped me to reflect and think. It encouraged me to keep fighting and work."

De Gea faces Spanish opposition for the first time since his £18m move from Atletico Madrid on Thursday when United host Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League.

And the goalkeeper is focused on maintaining his recent good form, which has kept him in the side ahead of Anders Lindegaard.

"The leagues are not too dissimilar in their style but English football is a little bit more physical and maybe a bit more aggressive," he said.

"The challenges you face up to are tougher and referees let play go on more here than they do in Spain.

"The important thing is not to let yourself get down because you can turn it around. Through hard work, I have waited for my chance and grabbed it."

Sir Alex has explained Paul Scholes' absence from open training on Wednesday and revealed the veteran is still in contention for a starting spot against Athletic Club.

Anderson is also set to play some part in midfield after being on the bench at Tottenham as the injury situation continues to improve. Anders Lindegaard has returned to training and Tom Cleverley has been working with the squad again at Carrington.

"We just gave Paul a day off," said the boss at his pre-match press conference. "We gave him a rest. He was indoors. Paul and Ryan [Giggs] don't train every day. We give them certain days off.

"Cleverley's back training today with the first team. He's been with the physios for a few days but he's now back in our control. [Antonio] Valencia should join us on Monday. Then, apart from Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher, that gives us a full squad. Hopefully it stays that way until the end of the season.

"Anderson was a sub on Sunday. He's back now and fit, training very well. He'll be involved tomorrow. It's good to get a player of that quality back for the run-in. Anders is training now. He's doing the running but it will take two or three weeks before he gets to the football side of it. He's progressing very well, though.

"It's an exciting time at the club. We had a fantastic result on Sunday. If we have the full squad available for us, it's going to help us."

De Gea told tonight’s United Review: "It’s exciting because I never imagined I’d be facing Athletic when I came here, so it’ll be a special night for me.

"I have lots of good friends at Athletic; I’ve played with several of them for Spain at various age levels. They’re all looking forward to the game too."

De Gea is hunting a second Europa League winner’s medal, having triumphed in the competition with his hometown club Atletico Madrid in 2010.

And he feels a successful run in Europe can add momentum to United’s bid to overhaul Manchester City in the title race.

"Victories in the Europa League would be good for our confidence, both individually and as a team, so reaching the latter stages can only help our league form," De Gea added.

Sir Alex has urged United to "wake up" in European football this season ahead of the Old Trafford encounter with Athletic Club.

The Reds face the side from Bilbao in the Round of 16 in the Europa League, looking to improve on the home showing against Ajax as the Amsterdammers won on the night but lost 3-2 on aggregate.

"It's a very difficult tie," stated the boss. "All the work Bilbao have done has been very impressive. They're a very progressive team in Spain at the moment and it's going to be very difficult for us. We need to waken up, there's not question about that. Some of our European form has been disapppointing.

"But it's an opportunity to progress and we want to take that opportunity, although it's going to need a very good performance."

The manager was honest enough to reflect on the Champions League exit and wonder what may have been the problem, after doing so well to reach three finals in four years.

"I don't know if it's because we're making too many changes in these games," he pondered. "Certainly against Ajax in the second leg we did that. We also made mistakes in the group stages. It's our own fault. The Basel game will always be remembered for the carelessness of our performance.

"We were a bit unlucky against Benfica at home but, at that point, we needed to beat them. It was a disappointment but tomorrow I'm playing a strong team and I hope that makes a difference."
