Not sure if this has been put up before, but as a contribution - this is how you access the LX5 service mode to check shutter count and few other values.

1. Insert battery (common sense but need to list down this step too)
2. Set dial mode to P
3. Simultaneously press "Up arrow" AND "Video record red button", then power on, release all buttons.
4. Press "Left arrow" AND "Menu" AND "Video record red button"

You should now see a 3 column table, labeled 1-16 on the left most column. Those are the last 16 error codes detected.

5. Press "Left arrow" AND "Menu" AND "Video record red button" again.

Now you should see the CAMERA INFO, with firmware and few other variables, PWRCNT, SHTCNT, STBCNT, PSVCNT.

Below is not verified info but I believe these are the meanings:

PWRCNT: Number of times camera powered on
SHTCNT: Number of times shutter fired
STBCNT: Number of times flash fired
PSVCNT: Number of automatic shutdown (powersave mode)

For example on my unit, it's 3401 power ons, 6598 shutter fires, 210 flash fired - rarely use flash! smile.gif and 16 powersave shutdowns smile.gif

Hope this info helps.

Oh and btw, for the error codes, if there is nothing shown (all 0000) does not mean no problem before, very easy to reset that, just power on the camera and without shutting it down, remove the battery and it will clear the error memory smile.gif Not sure whether the shutter count can be reset or not though, hopefully not smile.gif

google is your friend smile.gif

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2396223,00.asp

"The S100 performed admirably in our speed tests. The camera takes 2.3 seconds to start up and grab a shot, and can capture another photo every half second in continuous shooting mode. Shutter lag measured at only 0.3 second, which is an excellent score for a camera that you can slide into your pocket. Other cameras in this class weren't able to match the S100's performance. The Panasonic LX5 comes closest—it starts a bit faster, grabbing the first shot in 1.9 seconds, but records a 0.5 second shutter lag and requires you to wait 1.4 seconds between shots."

i've used S95 before and LX5 with fw 2.0 is really fast. I didn't measure but based on feeling, I think LX5 is just a bit faster but both are equally fast (in the order of ms... not s)

thnx. That's good to know. But then again, i still cant decide which one to go. But since lx5 has come down in price, that's a good advantage too

got a couple of used LX5 for sale here in LYN.... do some search and see... I think it's a good deal to grab a good second hand unit, still under warranty too cause LX5 has been in market for quite a while now and probably due for a refresh since S95 also has been updated to S100 now...

Just go to ebay.com (not .com.my) and search for "lx5 auto cap". then sort by lowest price + shipping.
Last time I managed to find one below USD5. Now looks like cheapest is USD12 or so.

Maybe got to keep an eye out and keep looking or just go buy one locally smile.gif e.g. here http://shashinki.com/shop/alc5b-auto-lens-...era-p-6753.html

Hello guys.

I've had an LX5 since early last year. Just saw this thread.

Just a question, does anyone know where to buy video out cable for the LX5? Does it even exist? as in change the display to a monitor instead of viewing on the LCD screen.

Maybe i asked the wrong question.

Does the cable that comes with the camera supports live view on a monitor?

Not view the already taken video, but viewing the video itself being taken on a monitor screen.

Ah i know what you mean, unfortunately i tried it too but doesn't work. You're tryingto use the lx5 as a live feed source? It's only able to playback what has been recorded. Haven't been able to find out how o do it... ;(

The port under the hotshoe cover should be able to feed video since it supports the digital view finder. Just dunno where to get that cable. rclxub.gif

just found this....

http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/discuss/c...0&page=1#Item_0

and it works!!!

connect the LX5 to TV/video in using the supplied AV cable.

Then put the camera into iA mode, and press and hold the delete/Q. menu button until you hear a sound.

Then whatever you see on the LCD should appear on your TV/projector/whatever external display you have connected. It seems to work in any mode, but iA mode allows you to press display and cancel out all OSD so it looks much better when used for live video feed.

Cool feature!! Only drawback is it's just using standard composite cable video out, so no HD output....

Nice find bro! Let me go get a VGA box and try. brows.gif

Just go to ebay.com (not .com.my) and search for "lx5 auto cap". then sort by lowest price + shipping.
Last time I managed to find one below USD5. Now looks like cheapest is USD12 or so.

Maybe got to keep an eye out and keep looking or just go buy one locally smile.gif e.g. here http://shashinki.com/shop/alc5b-auto-lens-...era-p-6753.html

anyone using the 52mm adapter + cpl filter and/or hood? does it help reduce or eliminate the purple verticle fringe/lines when you take video at aperture 2.0?

Batteries are consumables...all batteries also have limited charge cycle so sooner or later its gonna die wan. So I prefer using cheap third party ones... but must be at least 1/2 the price la. Like that more berbaloi

That's why I bengang with Panasonic battery since they chipped it which makes using some 3rd party not so nice.

have u tried printing those photos of iso1600 out? well this is every compact camera's weakness..low light is weak, n aperture is depend on zoom..
anyway lx5 rocks during the day~

Depend what noise level you can accept.

My way is when I shoot at low light in auto mode. my brain will straight go to ISO and check. Than I have to judge does this picture important, enviroment, people etc. Either continue with auto mode or switch to P or whatever to reduce the ISO. For LX5 my accepted level is ISO400.

Hi, question for the sifus here... I'm interested in the LX5, but reading dpreview and imaging-resource, they specifically mention problems with the white balance, especially for skin tones under artificial light.

I don't really want to shoot raw+jpeg all the time to fix stuff like this... interested in the LX5 more as a HQ point-n-shoot rather than a DSLR-lite.

I read that firmware 2.0 has fixes for white balance. Soo... can anyone here comment on whether white balance is still an issue anymore? Thanks!

No idea about new ones, probably around RM1.2k?

For second hand used, find one with warranty remaining should be around RM800-900 I guess.

erm, yes you need to remove the jjc lens cap, put on the 52mm adapter first.... e.g. like this:

user posted image

and i guess you won't be needing the jjc lens cap anymore if you're using the 52mm adapter+hood or filter..

not sure, you can see the original accessories here (under lens/filter/protector):
http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/compact/lx5...ccessories.html

and probably can find 3rd party ones.

someone seems to be selling this RM50 -> http://www.photomalaysia.com/forums/showth...apter-3rd-Party

I just googled for it and found the above. Also found in amazon $23.95 or RM70+ after conversion:

then just set to 8 seconds~

my pics are overexposed as well last week when i wan trying slow shutter pic~
i think if capture during daylight tendency to overexpose is high~
try capture at night~

i try capture flowing river during noon on slow shutter speed and result is overexposed~
still not sure how to overcome it~
switch to manual setting still cant capture~ sweat.gif

Read up "Exposure triangle".

Btw.. I thought LX5 can do 60sec exposure. You just need to lower your ISO until you get your desired shutter speed. If still not enough... you need to hold a ND filter to further stop light getting into the sensor.

Noon time sure need ND filter la....even base ISO and smallest aperture still be too fast for smooth water la.

ND filter is like your car's tinting ... reduce light going inside.

Noon time usually very bright mar.... and in most cases... the lowest ISO and smallest aperture (I think LX5 is f8) won't get you the 1/15 ss or slower (depending on speed of the water) needed to get that smooth look. The only way is to have ND filter in front to stop more light coming in... which is the same effect as closing the aperture (smaller hole for light to come in) and decreasing the ISO (sensor less sensitive to light).

lynbabysusu,

A tip for the car trail is ... roughly count how long it takes the one of the car to travel from one end to the other end of the frame = your minimum shutter speed.

BTW: Your Shutter speed / Aperture / ISO icon will turn to red if the camera cannot achieve proper exposure.

Hi guys,

I'd like your opinion on LX5 against Canon G12... I'll be taking mostly indoor photos, mainly pictures of my anime figurines, probably macro shots and some outdoor shots too...

i didnt use the G12 before some cant really comment on that~
for lx5 most of my pics taken tend to be a little underexpose / dark~
maybe to solve this issue, exposure have to be set at least +1/3EV~
i use photoscape most of the time to brighten it up~

if u are looking for point and shoot only lx5 suits u~
gf3 is a micro 4/3 with changeable lens if u wanna play with different lens~
u can consider other cam in league with lx5 like some of the newer model s100 or xz1~

guys,

i wanna buy small camera bag/pouch, just big enough to carry the LX5, a mecablitz 24 flash & spare batteries. any of you guys carry similar set with you & what bag u use to fit them?

i found these 2 KATA DP-415 & NG 1153. the main compartment can fit the cam i think but not sure whether the front compartment can fit the flash or not. you guys have better alternatives? i don want too big though, otherwise might as well carry a DSLR smile.gif

It is the card problem. I have similiar experience using Panasonic sd card. Spoil once and claim warranty. The second also problem. Even worst, spoil the camera when holiday taken picture. No buy Panasonic card anymore.

Spoil 2pcs Panasonic sd card my experience. That is enough for me. I didn't take their card. I sell back to them the card to reduce the cost. Straight away I get the transcend 32gb card.

You can claim the warranty since the card is lifetime warranty if not mistaken.

Halooooooooo guys!

Was using this LX5 for 1 year but never had the chance to really do some experiment on it. Finally have the time now after finishing my degree course. smile.gif

I have a few questions guys..

1) Lost my lens cover and was trying to find some replacement. Read through the whole thread and found this interesting from you guys. http://shashinki.com/shop/alc5b-auto-lens-...era-p-6753.html is this shop reputable? Really interested to get one when i get back to Malaysia.

2) Anyone know which part in KL or any other places on web selling LX5 battery? Any battery that works well will do. (Cant afford original battery that are selling rm250++)

3) Anyone have links for the latest firmware download for LX5?

Sorry if my some of my questions are bothering you guys. Really dont have much time to spend on the camera in the past few months. Will be learning more things over again from here! smile.gif

1. Shashinki is reputable. Bought my flash there & dont mind to buy from them again, if price is right. I bought a jjc auto lens cap on ebay, cheaper.
2. I bought my battery from ebay also. Look for the one which can support the cam's battery indication
3. Firmware update is still stuck at version 2.0. So no need to update (unless yours is still version 1?)

haha how to check the version actually? I bought it last year and never update it before .. psps..

ok try to search on ebay if theres one.. if not i will get from Shashinki..

i found out this camera cannot fully depend on Auto Mode. More to learn from you guys on the P mode. Focusing manually is indeed more fun!

yeah you should be able to do that kind of bokeh. as long as u move the cam very close to the subject, & have a background quite far away. choose A priority & take the biggest F available for the given zoom. choose macro mode, or miniature effect

ahh i see... the subjects are around 10cm tall, should be fine right? i see some other forums state they have issues with bokeh portrait... but they are trying to do bokeh on a subject 12 feet away and their subject is a human >"<

Try this....

1. Set camera to macro mode/focus (the switch on the left side of lens)
2. Set camera to A mode, set to F2.0
3. Set to max zoom

Now focus on person's face, move closer or further from person using your feet and see if you can get bokeh smile.gif

If hard to focus, either try moving even closer to person (while maintaining max zoom, F2.0, macro) but if really really cannot, switch off macro focus and use normal focus, but maintain max zoom + F2.0

I think I tried this last time with my LX5, can get a bit of bokeh but don't have my LX5 anymore can't test smile.gif

I brought it at rm150 last year. 3pcs Not sure now the price got go down or not.

Normally I don't trust the card class can give the speed that it state. So if camera said c6 enough, I will brought c10 to play safe. Video recording is the most demanding.

hard for me to upgrade camera.
I need a small one cause doing all kinds of outdoor activity - running / hiking etc..
LX5 doesn't justify to upgrade from LX3, maybe LX7 depends on review later on
S100 is the next best choice but then offers no picture quality improvement also..

From the preview samples, LX7 new smaller cmos sensor is more or less the same like the old niah. Don't see any substantial improvement. f1.4 is nice but after checking out (poisoned).. Sony's RX100 still leaves all in the dust.

hi guys,

I always have this problem in capture a "still image" of peoples with light gesture or body movement. I always have blurry effects on one of the focused characters. I am setting at Shutter mode. But no idea what is the ideal AF and Shutter speed.

Either i have to capture still image on darken condition which i would not prefer.

Eg. the person try to blow the candle. I snap alot of pictures. It still not as sharp as i expected. In this situation, should i use burst mode? Haha.. i try to minimize the manually deletion pictures after each shooting session. Conserve the battery life as long as it could last for a day.

LX3 users here...

Thanks!

hi ajay,

Actually i adjusted the shutter speed number frequently to get a "steady shot".. Now i check my Shutter mode is 1/6.

The theory about setting numbers is pretty hard for me to memorize naturally.

I always took a few shots before asking peoples to get ready. But they are times peoples are not posing for your photos capturing.

1/6 is very slow for human movement. in fact u need tripod for that kind of shutter speed.

Bought my lx5 last year and my officemate just got an lx7 which is so tempting..screen is so sharp and video is smooth as silk!

Btw, any particular reasons why my camera seems

guys..i need your opinion here ;

1. LX5 = RM1099 with 5years warranty
2. LX7 = RM1550

both are brand new...it is worth to get LX7 or just get LX5? since the price different is quite huge..RM450

LX7's much bigger aperture of f/1.4 at its widest end (f/1.4-2.3) is already damn worth the price. That's a big ONE stop of light advantage. With the LX5, you have to shoot with ISO 800 but with LX7 you can shoot with ISO400 (example) thumbup.gif

Not to mention there should be other improvements in the sensor and other notable features such as better video functions/faster burst mode/etc

@Aztechx: Screen is pretty sharp as it has 920k dots in the 3" screen! Almost comparable to that of the newer DSLRs smile.gif

Hi not sure whether this is correct thread but can anyone recommend me where to buy LX 7. Love the Panasonic LX series alot. Is it worth it to get the accessories as well.

What tripod you all use for LX 5 ?

well well well what do you know...i bought a random camera and see see there is a specific thread created for it at LYN.

Anyway, yeah its a good camera and im completely satisfied despite its old technology. I'm a camera noob myself...but its fun to get the real pros who see me holding the LX5 and thought i'm equally as pro...lol.

Hey there.
Im a LX5 user and currently upgrading to LX7 which I have bought it over last weekend.
Im pretty comfortable with the function previously despite that it doesn't have the touch screen function.
But what really attracts me is the great light sensor during night PLUS with the long exposure up to 80 sec. biggrin.gif

Most of the time i use dynamic and vibrant to make the colors more attractive~
other mode i seldom use~

i usually use iA coz i snap and jalan snap and jalan~

if wanna capture trail of light on the street or water flowing use S mode with long shutter speed~
if wanna capture "bokeh" A mode or iA will do~

Dear Sifus,

Need to ask something about taking low light pictures with the LX-5 which for me has ended up frustrating

what i do now is set the exposure to a lower number whenever i need to use the flash to counter the 'fake' white light in the pictures.
or i rely on trying my very best to make sure my hands are steady when i take a shot without flash with more exposure.

any advice from u guys?what other values can i tweak to get the best out of the camera?

an example would be the photos below, most of my picture are not giving me 'vibrant' colors like the ones in the second and im really lost on how to get the perfect mix.

btw, how do i access the full details such as the mode i used when taking the picture?

Thanks in advance!

1. Any recommendation for buying additional lens? Reasonable price for zoom and macro lens for Lx5 .
2. Need advice for taking pictures in low light. For eg, I tried taking pictures at a low light waterfall at about 12pm... And used the scene mode night pictures and also tried scenery mode, but the flash doesn't work. The pictures came out dark... Can't see the people's face... How?

Scenery mode does not flash, try use night portrait mode or better still, just use PASM mode.

I just surveyed at digital mall pj. Apparently production of LX5 has stopped, but a few shops still carry @ around 1.1k. LX3 totally no more, LX7 1.3k. Sad...

from what i know sometimes in low light places capturing a pic takes longer a little means ur hand gotta be steady if not the pic become blur~

u can try increase exposure to +1/3 or 2/3 to c the effect of the pic~
