Just curious. I am looking for a position in Singapore. My expected salary is SGD4500. But my friends told me that most of her friends request between SGD 3 - 4k. I am in the IT line and I am a J2EE developer. Do you think I am asking for too much?

number of years of exp?
if u wan 4.5....just try and ask for 4.5
No need to lower to 3-4 as the employer will do that part for u.
if the employer doesn't then it is ur gain.

6 Years. My current salary is RM 6600.
Thanks

Then I can tell you 4.5 is very much lower than what the market can pay you.
Go higher...match your number in ringgit if you want.
IT is a good market.  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

Are you sure? I have a few friends working in IBM. They are around 35 years in age doing support and they are getting SGD4500. They are also singaporeans. Are you sure that the market in Sg can pay SGD 6600?

If she can convince the interviewer to pay her that amount, why not?  Put there with a nego clause for get out of jail card.

The thing is. Even if i put SGD4500(NEGO). If it is too high, potential employers will not even look at it.

sweat.gif then why u comparing
*
Because my friend is around 35. I am around 30. I really do not know the market in Sg. I dun think it is fair that companies are paying on a 1-1 (RM- SG) scale. Can someone maybe advise me the scale? How much lower should i ask for based on my current salary of RM 6600?
Thanks

it is very much up to u.
if u think ur skill set can demand that much, why not try?
i have slightly less exp when i came, and i am not specialized like u (u are in j2ee, i am half bucket of water)...but i got more than what your frens' frens said.  tongue.gif  tongue.gif
but if u think 6.6 is too high, then i advise u go for 5 (round numbers are good)
employers will rarely match the number u ask unless u are exceptionally good or the number u ask is very low.
*
How did you get the job btw?

how much lower can u stomach?  blush.gif
if u serious think your failure to secure a call from your prospective employer or headhunter is your salary then just scale it down further, it just a click   rolleyes.gif lower 10% each month until u suceed  rolleyes.gif  hahah..

but if u have dun enough spammin so far hmm.gif ,
i believe some irritated HH will have somehow call u n discuss your expectation with u,
not getting a call at all maybe u need to relook at your profile  nod.gif

Getting lots of calls including from those indian recruitment centers offering me SGD 3000. A lot of the calls I am getting are actually offering me interviews for jobs based in KL. I really do not know how low I can scale down to. But so far I am asking this question because my friend in SingTel is getting SGD4k and I am asking her to find a job for me. If my friend did not inform me that she was earning SGD 4k I would have no doubt that I am worth between SGD 4.3 and SGD 4.5. But the fact that she told me that, I have to really reconsider. My headhunter friend was telling me about a job in NCS and they are willing to pay SGD4.5 but my application was KIVed. Another thing that really caused me to ponder was that I have another friend in IBM who is a Singaporean doing support there and he was also earning around SGD4.5K I think he is a NUS graduate in engineering so he should be earning more. I really dunno the true market in Sg. Are they actually paying much less. I mean a lot of people are saying that when u get into Sg, it should be between 0.8 to 1:1 but now i am actually seeing a lot of people actually not earning in that scale. I mean a lot of people who i would think should be earning more then 6-8k by now if salaries are really 1:1 are not really getting that amount.

Yeah....many people say 1:1 or at least 0.8.....they can say that many years back where the economy is good or picking up....right now, it is more tough....you see yourself as you got friends.

I didnt get 1:1 when i came here but not bad also lar.....

You need to keep trying. But why you want to come sgp?  hmm.gif
*
Very simple. I do not trust Malaysian economy. I think it is very likely to fall. I think Singapore is a developed country. Thus there are more opportunities. I want to improve myself.

If you have no confidence in yourself. Then ya ok. I know that there are a lot of bad points in Sg also. In Sg life is much more boring. It's about work. U dun have a car. Food is not as good. But I dun think that we stay here to do all these things. I feel that to progress we have to sacrifice some things dun u agree?

so if u were not in sg, what is it you do to consider not boring?
go out wif frens? then make frens in sg...there is a lot more to sg than what we all think.
drive around? then go take the bus and see where it takes you.
ur life is boring if u make it so.
*
Of couse. You can do that. But you have to admit that mobility wise you are limited. I mean you know what I mean rite. I think people tend to be more warmhearted in My. Not saying that such ppl do not exist in Sg, but less. People are a little carefree over in KL. I agree that in Sg there are lots of things over. Definitely. But atmosphere wise, I dun think so.
Rite.

I mean people and atmosphere wise. It's a little more cold over there. I mean I can feel it.

Thanks for the input. I'm trying to gather more information with regards to the recruitment firms/headhunters in SG as I have an interview with them for Search Consultant position.

Any more inputs?

L7Awesome, mind to share your experience with them? How did they found you? Did they headhunted you from Msia?

Well google is not really my best friend.I salute you if you really can get all of your answer from Google and not consult others. Is this not a valid question? I am asking others who has the experience in applying for an EP they would know what is really needed. If there is no one here who has not applied for an EP then fair enough.

If google is really the best friend why do we need consultants in the first place since we can get all of the answer from Google?

Thanks

I might be joining you guys soon. I will be going to Singapore soon. Just curious. What kind of salary is considered "high" in singapore when it comes to status. Please dun tell me 10k + because this is something not many people really like earn. Tell me a sum that say most professionals would consider is ok.

Anyway those numbers from salary guides from recruitment firm look inflated (even when compare with Malaysian salary guide), as most employees don't even reach that range, or perhaps I am that incompetent to not get that salary range sad.gif

Dat is the thing. Many of my friends(NUS Grad, 35) are earning like 4.5- 4.8k. I would think that this is considered like a senior post already. Dun think it is that easy to make big bucks anymore over there.
