Hi anyone, i just bought the WD Essential 1TB at Viewnet. But the speed of transfer file is very too slow. Any idea? Here the attached file.
Does it happen when you copy a single file, like a 4GB movie for instance?

Yes, and i just bought it few days ago from viewnet and also around 2 hours something got one time click sound. But i used the CrystalInfo check the HDD health, all is good. Then should i need refer back to viewnet services because still under warranty?

Try one more thing. Run WD diagnostic tool.
http://download.wdc.com/windlg/WinDlg_124.zip

Run the short test first, then the long test.
If if you get errors or such, time to RMA. biggrin.gif

Just found out recently about the firmware update for Seagate's 1TB platter 3TB drive... it fixes the 'chirping' issue. More info here and here.

Firmware link/info here.

I have flashed to the new firmware successfully. Data is intact and the chirping is gone. biggrin.gif

Maybe the info about this issue can be posted on the first page.

I simply ran the .exe in windows environment. laugh.gif

Hmm.. did Seagate extend the warranty to 2 years after releasing this firmware update?

I've got an interesting story to share.

I bought this 1TB WD Green HDD back in 2009. It was used in an external enclosure (CM Xcraft). I didn't use it much, only to put some backups of backups. After using I would store it (without removing from the external enclosure) in a cupboard.

Recently I took it out grab some files.. and soon discovered the hdd is dead, with the dreaded scratching sound when trying to power up. The last time I turned it on was more than a year ago... I am not sure if it is dead because I stored it in a diagonal, slightly upright position (it was on top of some magazines and documents..lol) or because I didn't turn it on for a long time (I recall reading an article about this - not turning on your hdd for a long time may spoil it).

I also have a 500GB WD green, bought in 2010. The last time I checked (around 5 months back), this HDD is damaged - Both full and quick format don't work and it cannot complete WD's Diagnostic Tools Extended Test. I didn't send it for RMA because I wanted to wait until the warranty is almost over... which is something I may live to regret because it is most probably over by now.. LOL. I put it in an antistatic bag and left it on my table. Anyways, I decided to give this disk another thorough checking... and much to my surprise, it passed the WD tool extended test! (same PC) sweat.gif
Not sure what may have caused this revival of the 500GB WD Green.... could it be related to the newer Intel RST drivers ? shocking.gif

IMHO the price is reasonable, better than buying 1TB.

Latest update (viewnet):
Seagate 3TB RM439
WD Green 3TB RM444

Wanna share another good RMA experience with WD.
As always, I used their courier service, strangely though it was free; there was a msg on the RMA page saying they normally charge but currently it's free.

Took them like 2 weeks to pickup my dead HDD (Green 500GB), had to email them several times since the courier guy FFK twice.

Today I got my replacement, a re-certified 3"5 WD Black 500GB (WD5001AALS) thumbup.gif

Edit:
Just checked the details, RMA created 15 Sept, courier pickup 5 Oct, replacement received 11 Oct.

bro, can u snapshoot the photo? i dun think it is wd black but a black and white label sticker, as this yr i have warranty green, blue , black wd, total around 11 unit, for blue wd rma, i always got the new wd blue unit for replacement, same goes to the black wd, but for the green wd, i always get back either a new green wd or a refurbished recertified black sticker wd hdd.
*
I didn't come to a conclusion that it is WD Black model because of the sticker (there's no green/blue/black wording), but because of the MDL (google this WD5001AALS). It is also heavier than the green.

I also ran a HDTune benchmark:
user posted image

Compare that to other WD5001AALS benchmark that I found on the net:

Plus the drive gets hot fast, another 'trademark' of the Black series.. lol.
I am just luckier than you perhaps? Not the first time something like this has happened.. last time I RMAed a 1TB MyBook Essential and got a 2TB version in return. Others have reported something similar as well. thumbup.gif

BTW, this seems to be a shortstroked drive. Read this: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261937-3...rs-shortstroked

Well I thought one look at the benchmark and model number is enough..

So is this a WD Green? tongue.gif

There's a new 3TB in the market, from Toshiba. No idea about the warranty and all but it's priced at RM409 @ viewnet.

I think it's this one:

Thanks for the info. It seem my old motherboard GA-G31M-S2L doesn't support 3TB so I guess external is my only option  sad.gif Actually would my old rig can even detect the external hard disk?

Seagate has a software that breaks the 2TB barrier even on older systems.

WD BLACK 4TB @ RM959 (viewnet)
Anyone wanna be an early adopter? tongue.gif

I'd rather get 3TB x 2 with that price... of course, there's no 5 years warranty and all.. biggrin.gif

yes, as always

review:
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardw...-review-11.html

QUOTE
Pros:

- Massive capacity
- Good performance
- 5 Year warranty
- Easily the quietest Black ever released

Cons:

- Not as fast as the 4TB RE model
- While price per GB is reasonable $340 is still a lot for a hard drive
- Noise reduction does come at the price of performance potential

Is it possible to convert an external 3.5" HDD into an internal one for my desktop?

P/S: It's a WD My Book Essential 2TB
*
It it possible but you will void the warranty if you open up the MyBook.
