Is the 24mm already available in Malaysia? What is the cheapest price you can get?

I have been using NEX5N with the kit for nearly a year now and I am enough with waiting for them. It is very difficult to get a hand on their product. The 50mm has been announced for a long long time and yet it is very hard to get one. So as the NEX 7... inventory management is very very weak...

The inventory is so bad that I just read that someone pre-order the Nex 7 for 7 months at Amazon before he got it! The only good thing about this is that your Nex will worth more in 2nd hand market. Haha.

I actually wish for a NEX 6 series, something in between 5 and 7. That means. more buttons, touch screen and same sensor/megapixels as 5N... wuhooooooo

49mm is not the perfect size but the correct size. anything else will not fit!

Yep! Have not seen any 7 on the street yet. But have seen quite some OM-D around. It is very easy to recognize the OM-D because of the look.


Yes! Show me the Lenses SONY! A wide angle zoom and sharp pancake is what we want to see... not the bloody heavy and big zooms.

When I compare this Nex 5N kit zoom pricing with other mirrorless with kit zoom, I still think they give the best value for the money, IF what you want is just a good camera with kit zoom... as Nex don't have other good lens choice.

I have a Nex 5N and 18-55. Until today I still think is the the best "value for money" mirrorless combo, it is giving ur APS-C image quality on such a small form factor. On my last trip I ask my mum to take it for his shoot. You know old people are noob on camera and they don't even understand how to half press to pre focus or things like focus and recompose. So everything have to be auto. The pictures come back all sharp without misfocus (as long as the subject is not at the corner/border when the background will be in focus). Old people also like to print and the prints are just amazing and have all the SLR look. [I am referring to image quality, nor artistic value, lol]

When you use 18-55 at 18mm, you can use f3.5. If you buy 19mm, you can use f2.8. The difference is only 2/3 step, other than smaller size, there is really not much benefit.

If you buy the 30mm, it is effectively a 45mm view on Full Frame camera. That is quite an interesting view. And if you shoot 30mm with 18-55 you probably are now at f4 something which means now this lens can really give you more than 1 stop advantage in both low light and bokeh (background blur). So this look more interesting. But for me, it is still not interesting enough.

The 50mm is very interesting. It can shoot wide open and still get very sharp results [but not on Nex 7 which the megapixels outresolved the lens capability]. The 1.8 will give very good bokeh when needed and quite a good low light performer compare to the sigmas. It will be a good match for 18-55 because the 50 of 18-55 will need to be shot at near f5.6, you can getting 3 stop advantage! Also while not related, the silver lens look more cool then the black sigmas.

Please don't sell the 18-55, you can't get much for selling it and it is really value for the money.

I didn't get the 16mm. It is fine for small picture view on web but for larger work, it is too soft at the corners. Furthermore, not many people comfortable using it which is consider wide angle (24mm full frame equivalent). It is wider than your kit which start at 18mm and 2 mm is a lot for wide end.

You are welcome. I forgot to talk about the 16mm. Even it is cheap when bought it combo, I decided not to buy it because this is not a good lens. It is very soft at corners even if you are willing to stop down. And 16mm is 24mm in full frame which is very wide and not good for general all purpose use.

The 18mm of 18-55mm is good for landscape also but unfortunately have a big problem, it has a very very big barrel distortion and your horizontal line is not that straight and if your shoot architecture, you will cray when all lines are not straight. Luckily if you shoot raw you can "fix" it with lens correction in camera raw or light room. Just remember after you fix it, the borders will be cropped away gone so 18mm will be more like 20mm.

Again the biggest problems with NEX system is not the camera but the lenses. I have been waiting and waiting and waiting and they are just very slow on things. I hope there will be a good wide angle zoom release later.

Added on July 11, 2012, 8:03 pmThe kit lens of NEX is as good as the Canon (which is surprisingly very good). The NEX sensor is better than Canon which is a fact now. Canon has been lacking behind competitors. But remember that there are still lots of weakned in 5N compare to say 550d. There are too little buttons/dials with 5N so if you need more control (such as shoot in manual mode) it will be challenging. Also shooting with LCD screen in bright days are not easy compare to optical viewfinder. So be careful when you trade because you will lose some money, unless you trade 2nd hand with 2nd hand.

One weakness of Nex 5N on tripod use is the focusing. With SLR, we can easily focus a spot and switch to manual focus to lock the focus but we cannot do this with Nex. Even we can switch to manual focus in the menu, the "continuous pre focusing" of NEX will move your focusing when you are on the way in your menu. There is no way to turn off "continuous pre focusing". There is also no such feature as "back button focusing". It makes it quite annoying to use it on tripod unless you do manual focus. I wish they release a firmware to let us turn off the pre focusing.

Another thing is if you put ND400 filter to it to do longer exposure, it becomes darker than SLR so auto focus is difficult, even manual focus can be difficult.

But once you release it, won't it do the "continuous pre focus again"? because once you release your finger it is back to AF already.

Oh OK. Never touch the Nex 7, it can disable the "continuous pre focus"?

Any Sony Center got Nex 7 display?

I love to have the 12-35 f2.8 which will beat the Nex with f3.5-5.6 anytime. But that lens is RM4,000+... which is quite hard for me to digest because Canon 17-55mm f2.8 is being known as ridiculously expensive can cost RM3,200... the Canon L build 24-105 f4 is around RM3.3k. So very hard to digest the price for this Panny 12-35... later the 35-100 come out I think it will be above RM5k... Some more Nex 5N with the kit cost only so little at RM2.2k. Not even enough to buy the OM-D.

BTW, next Wednesday we will have big announcement from Panasonic on new camera and lenses. Counting every minute down now!

How much you got your Nex 7 for? Body only?

Try underexpose and then dragged clarity slider in LightRoom or Camera Raw to the right.

Don't know about the F3 but you can assign ISO to 1 of the 3 custom keys. However there are drawbacks to each.

The RIGHT KEY usually we will assigned "shoot mode" to select P/Tv/Av/M mode so it is gone

The C key (middle button) can contain up to 5 shortcuts such as White Balance, ISO, etc. If you put ISO here, you need to press C key and than use arrow to select the item before you can adjust the setting. Slower but better than looking for it in menu.

The B key (the lowest button beside the screen) can be assigned to 1 function. There is one problem, say if you put ISO here, you cannot have "flexible spot" as your focus mode because that will override the button with the focus area selection feature. This is a bit silly because most of us will use touchscreen to select focus point. But the good news is I figure out you can just use "center" as focus mode and if you need another point, you can touch the screen. You can maintain the button for ISO. However your focus point will be reset to center easily with doing something such as entering the menu.

Nex 5 has similar feature as long as you update the firmware.
