Hi bros, I bought my nex-5 + 16mm 1.5yrs ago, and I'm really disappoint and frustrated with the performance, I have dslr, and the quality from this camera is... Very bad, white balance is all off during auto (usually appeared colder) image quality is mushy, very soft.

After gone thru here maybe it's due to the inferior 16mm lens ? Ok I'm considering the 19mm sigma, any brother used this before ? And is it a lot better then the 16mm? Color wise compared to 16mm? And where is the best bargain?
*
Well, even dslr bodies require MANUAL adjustments of white balance , so i believe your expectations on Nex in that criteria, was not apt enough to warrant such a criticism. If the combination did not feel right to you, then should have sent it back to Sony during the warranty period. There is some tolerance levels in manufacturing, even other brands will have and slight differences which could contribute to slightly soft images, perhaps a different manufacture date lens would have worked better for you

As of may 2011, NEX-5 was the best selling mirrorless cam in Japan, so it's no slouch. (refer BCN ranking below)
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...0520_20063.html

As of July 2012, NEX 5N is still within top 10 in Japan http://bcnranking.jp/category/subcategory_0008_month.html . 5N still beats NEX-7 in July.

Perhaps you can get an adapter and mount your previous dslr lens on the NEX and then only make a more fair comparison (autofocus/steadyshot may not be available)

Hi, i m thinking to let go my D700 n get a nex camera. How u guys think?
Btw, anyone try compare use adaptor+ normal dslr lens compare with nex kit? Do they a lot different? I means if like nikkor 18-55vr compare with thhe nex 18-55?
Thank for sharing...

Cause i considering to stick with my all nikkor lens by adaptor or just use the nex kit.
*
You're letting go a Full Frame for a APS-c???

Yes, i'm using an adapter. Can say that coming from a D700 you will feel shortchanged, cause manual focusing can be frustratingly slow and your subjects could lose patience. You also lose the VR VRII functions, no aperture control on some Nikkors and some EXIF data would not be available.

Makes more sense to keep your D700 and get the Nex just as a backup or when the situation is more suitable for it.

I see, cause my d700 is heavy for daily use... btw, i thought the new adaptor got auto focus?
Thinking to use with nikkor 12-24 n 70-300vr...
*
So far I guess it's only the Sony E-mount to canon EOS EF-mount, and Sony E-mount to Sony Amount adapters which are electronically connected. I haven't heard of an electronic one for Nikkor yet, so it's manual focus/manual aperture but i'm also hoping for an electronic one haha.

QUOTE(loon1983 @ Aug 19 2012, 09:51 PM)
Huh, i thought LA-EA2 from sony can auto focus? Nikkor on it still manual focus?  blush.gif
Btw, here no ppl using dslr lens  or prime lens with nex? I thinking get the kit or body only with the adaptor   icon_question.gif

There are many that use manual lenses on the NEX. Leica lenses even.

Your 12-24 should work fine with the NEX+Adapter because it has an aperture lever behind the lens. VR is i guess not an issue at this focal length. So you must find an adapter that has an aperture ring as well.

Hmm.. i read articles from various sources of photography. Yea, best is to get out n shoot pics to improve skill. That is no doubt. But sometimes inspirations do come from the works and writings of others.

Anyway.. I see a trend from different authors where they are saying the same thing:

The next big thing would be about Video and moving images. It seems that still images is becoming something less and less appreciated. The convergence is already happening where the upper end of DSLR are now made to also take great full HD videos.

Internet bandwith and memory card capacity has also kept up and probably is quite fast nowadays to support video uploads and streaming. Youtube has shown itself to be the epitome of video portals, i'm wondering if Facebook will allow video uploads in addition to image uploads . hmm..

So, probably in the current and coming times, these NEX's and it's lenses really do need to be the be good at still and be even better with video to stay relevant.

From what i heard around and SAR, i assumed that 35mm will only release by end of this year or earlier next year (together with nex-6 or maybe wait the nex-7 supersede which take even longer)... i could be wrong  doh.gif

by the way, i found that SEL30M35 composition performance is outstanding but lose a bit to the 50F18... u may try this lens out to shoot potrait, ofcos the bokeh will not so nice  unsure.gif

hi william, just got back from my trip...
manual focus is sick when doing street photography... i'm a newbie and when i finish manual focus, my object move away or loss patience ad  sad.gif

Focus peaking helps. Yea, what u mentioned is true, so MF needs quicker fingers and mind.

From my personal experience,
1. Before lifting up the camera you already know in mind which point you want to focus on. For Portrait, i know that I always want the eyes to be in focus.
2. As you lift up the cam , the left hand should be already gripping on the focus ring, and right hand thumb roughly on the MF assist button.
3. Once the camera is raised, check on the focus peaking and
- if confident, then MF and approximately at the time with the most 'red' peaking color, fire away.
- if doubtful, right thumb immediately hits the MF assist and peaking focus as quick as possible and fire away. Don't need a second press on the MF assist before the shutter.

May set to Bracket: Cont. mode if i want to be more safe. But will end up with 2 extra shots to delete after. Hope this helps.

Subject moving .. talk to them lor... so they stay there longer? rolleyes.gif

Just my opinion.. As how KeanHui showed with the Soldier figure, i think you have too many characters in that frame. Simplify it and leave only Batman in the frame, if batman is the subject you want to highlight.

QUOTE(toughnut @ Oct 11 2012, 09:23 AM)
anyone know the technique to focus on objects at infinity using SEL lenses?

i tried to focus on (full) moon using SEL1855 both manual and DMF mode but failed

keep rotating the focus ring till furthest end, failed

try to focus on the edge of the moon, failed too

change the focus size, failed again. duh
*
I did before. I placed the camera on a tripod, use focus peaking + manual focus. Snap test pic, if blurry adjust abit more.. Perhaps 3 or 4 photos before I get it absolutely sharp. Because the camera is on the tripod, I could fine tune it this way.

I check on the intersection of the lines on the moon, the dimples to confirm.

A few more from me. 1st gen NEX-5 | manual focus 35mm f1.8 nikkor , not enough reach so I notice most of my shots are 1/2 body.

Yup. Thanks. But it's this lens that produced the lovely color actually blush.gif, which is why i really like it. This is why I am very interested to see if e-mount 35mm F1.8 can beat this Nikkor 35mm or not.

Ranting..

Sony sony.. I feel abit irritated when you intentionally limit or cripple your own products just for the sake of market segmentation.

- NEX-6 could have had a magnesium alloy body and touchscreen, as clearly you can do it on the NEX-5. But you gave it a polycarbonate body... vmad.gif

- Why can't NEX-7 be weather sealed to compete with OM-d? sweat.gif

- I want a NEX with 18 mpx+ F3 articulate screen + 5N touchscreen and High ISO performance + 6's iso hotshoe + 7's External Mic connector. laugh.gif

Me too, contemplating NEX-6 with the 35mm f1.8 + kit1650. See how it goes lah. My worry is on the rubberized grip and I prefer the metal finish of the 5 series. Ego also abit hurt cause canon 650D already has 18mpx. I would prefer NEX with 18mpx.

Any reports on the plastic casing of NEX-6? It feels like a downgrade when going from magnesium to plastic casing, while paying more.

My trusty 1st gen NEX-5 will then go to my younger sibling.
