Looking for a good mobile player, decided to ditch my gen3 iPod touch for a more mobile/better SQ alternative.

Budget : 700-1k
Using : UE Triple.fi 10s
Music : Everything from acoustic and rock to pop and DnB.
- Multi format compatible(FLAC, if possible ALAC)
- Long battery life (15-20hr)
- Big memory capacity
- Onboard DAC/Amp

I can only think of HiFiMan 601/602.

Or maybe an old ipod 5/5.5th gen rockboxed and DIY hard disk upgrade.

Sanza players also can be rockboxed and then you can add on a 32gb microsd.

Jaben has 601 for RM900.

Seems that the 602 big difference in pricing though at RM1550. It has USB DAC hmm.gif

I think buy direct from hifiman can have the 602 slightly cheaper but at the expense of local support, possible tax bomb, etc etc.

The 601 has barely 9 hours of battery-life. The SQ rating is good but everything else seems to be only about average? Any have a better recommendation? I'm going for a vacation soon so I'm hoping to decide and buy one for traveling by next week.

Perhaps Cowon J3? No ALAC support though. Website says 64hours music playback. Get the 32GB version and slot in another 32GB microsd.

I can live with 64Gb of music wink.gif And ALAC is an optional requirement as I was using iPod for a long time and I converted most of my FLACs into ALACs so iTunes will read them. Guess it's time to re-extract all of my FLAC archive then, it's gonna be a long week.

At least you have back ups. All I have is ALACs. Will be a big headache for me to switch to non Apple Lossless players. Not to mention the possible loss of quality if re-encode to FLAC.

I think Cowon J3 32gb + 32gb microsd is going to set you back around RM1400.

Well, MrJinggles has the J3 32gb for 1190, and I have an old 16gb Mircosd. Only problem is, his thread says 2 weeks for delivery....

Sanza clips, clip zip or fuze all accept microsd. 20 hours music playback IINM. Head-fi has good reviews on their sound signature, some even prefer it more than apple's.

C30 is another you can consider. 15 to 20 hours playback with microsd support too.

Or save yourself the headache and get the ipod classic 160gb tongue.gif Rated at 36 hours playback.

That's the thing. I've had iPods for awhile now and they all sound, at best, average, not to mention it those apps are so distracting. tongue.gif So I'm looking for something plainly for music with a built in BBE, as all my iPods had SonicMax pro installed.

Does BBE make any difference on lossless music? hmm.gif

Is that app just an equalizer app?

Not quite. Here's a quote from the app's FAQ regarding the question:

Equalizers manipulate sound by suppressing and boosting various points on the audio wavelength spectrum. SonicMax Pro doesn't distort the spectrum-it keeps it aligned. Because of impedance and power restraints, most speakers (earbuds, earphones and docks included) tend to delay the high frequencies, causing the mid and low parts of the audio to reach your ears first-out of sync with the high frequencies-resulting in sound that is muddy and unfocused. SonicMax delays the mid and low frequencies so that all the sound (low, mid and high) hits your ear at the same time. This results in what we would call pure, clean sound.

As for if it actually affects lossless file quality, as the answer also states, it allows you to customize the outputs, from bass "thump and/or punch" to making the mids clearer and even setting your speaker/earphone's optimum KHz. So it's not so much how much better it sounds on Lossless but rather how much control you have when you listen to your lossless, if that makes sense. blush.gif

Sounds good. Feeling the pinch haha, not willing to fork out the 4.99 for now.

I use Headquake. Some sort of 3d soundstage app.

So have you decided what player to go for?

Since I'm so short on time, I guess my iPod will have to do for now. But I'm really liking the J3, simple design and lots of space, I think that will be my next platform for a portable setup. Right now, I'll just save it for when I'm on vacation. tongue.gif

As for the price, I think $3.99 is very small compared to what we'd pay for a piece of good audio gear.
