Hi All savvyrian....

Just got my second hand savvy(Manual H/L 09) yesterday.
Last owner keep it good condition and well maintained.

I realised the clutch is kinda high, one of my mechanic fren help to make the clutch lower.

But the clutch got ngek ngek sound, any savvyrian have magic solution for this?

Any advice for a second hand manual savvy?
Plan to go renau tech to do a full check up soon.

Btw is any savoc club active currently around klang valley?

Thank you NOX for clearing the cloud. I guess that already answered most questions.

Usually speed sensor is the case when the car jerks DURING constance speed. Mine already got problem, but I live with it since its still working most of the time. According to Alan Renautech, Renault ECU is clever enough to control CO emission on all range of driving, and therefore when speedo pointing at 0kmh, ECU will automatically cut down fuel supply, and therefore the car jerks.

Throttlebody dirty is caused by the PCV return tube suck too much engine oil. Dirt that didn't get filter out completely will jam the throttle action. Usually the sympthoms are
1) Semput idling, sometimes wanna stall, sometimes RPM ever sohigh
2) Tremendous engine drag during gear change, throttlebody unable to shut properly when gas pedal fully released. Fuel over flow IN tha manifold.
3) Higher FC
Seldom the case when while driving constant speed it jerks. To clean throttlebody, just unplug the intake assy, unscrew 4 bolts, detach wiring socket. The whole throttlebody can be remove and can brush with DIESEL. I don't recommend cleaning agent(spray cleaner) as I scared those fikas will destroy parts inside. However, if u r rich enough can get electronic contact point cleaner spray. It will not harm any component, but 1 can is around 50 bucks, and cleaning a dirty throttlebody can use up to 3 cans.

Another culprit is the crank sensor a.k.a TDC sensor. Reading wrong engine speed can cause a lot of protection came up to jeopardize the car's performance. However, if TDC got problem the general sympthom is very hard to crank start the car. Usually the problem starts with loosen bracket. Shawie experts(even noob like u & me) resolute with cutaway the whole socket, joint the wire with soldering. With out crappy road condition can last atleast a year or 2. Some even lasted 8 years, new car void warranty until today.

Last but not least, ignition coil already went wonkey. Usually the plug cable gone crazy 1st. If your car model is pre-2008 model, ignition coil came combo with plug cable, you'll have to change full set. Can't remember the price, but as I can recall ignition coil 150, cable 150. Sympthoms of wonkey ignition/plug cable as below:
1) Backfire like a rally car
2) Release clutch went full throttle, the car will drag back, emit black smoke + miss fire a few times before picking up speed
3) Can't drive slow, or the car will keep on misfiring.

I don't mind spoon feeding, in the end we're in a small family of an european hearted local car. Within this community, if we don't help, who will? Whether OEM factory produce replacement part, still vastly depending on our survivors. If 1 Shawie less in the community, meaning less opportunity u & me get to enjoy lower price replacement part. So let's hold our hands together and get more people to love this toilet bowl looked alike alien ride.

P/s: can't even blame newbie asking same question over & over again. The car existed for 8 wonderful years, we only running on V4. Besides the 1st page of the thread is not as useful, majority of solution/faq regarding Shawie is not present. I myself owned the car for 7 months now, obtained most knowledge from magicians and my previous car knowledge. I can't imagine if someone totally new to road vehicle, suddenly gave them a Shawie, what would happened if the car break down laugh.gif Porbably ended up in Plotong SC, and got advised by their useless SA an engine swap for whopful RM12k doh.gif

Thumbs up fr davidke20,....I am one of the newbie bought second hand savvy, who 1ike to spoon feed by magician....save my time reading all the post ..haha
ya rite...i just just a 1azy bumps..

I guess this is the last batch for savvy..

Read through quite a number of savvy thred, found out many pp1 suggest dnt get AMT,
which cost a bomb to repair....
althou some AMT user really likes their AMT very much
Jam using MT is not fun at all

(S0rry f0r the o=0,l=1 . .. keyboard got problem....)
Third day driving savvy nw, s0 far s0 g00d
just dnt 1ike the heavy c1utch and the ngek ngek s0und
p/s : is it possible to make the clutch lighter?
my mechanic fren said can't be changed....
kena sc01d by mechanic fren,said sabby is a rubbish car,n0 resa1e va1ue
hard t0 find spare parts,a11 parts as0 expensive
he said i t0ta11y made the wr0ng decisi0n,ti11 nw i am quite upset and em0 ab0ut tat

Since i live in pj, renautech is kinda near for me. . .
so i guess i will stick with that for repair/service and so on....

nod.gif Welcome to the small community, should you require any assistance, feel free to drop us a line. Even without problem also can come and troll icon_idea.gif I oftenly hangout with GaGarians cause my wifey's ride is Plotong GaGa. You know la, both GaGa and Shawie shares the same platform, so a lotsa things(including problem) are quire common. If you feels like it, feel free to join us on Friday TT. Almost every Friday we do TT at Sri Petaling Al Arshad Maju, same row as The Store.

As for your magician friend, can get him to screw himself liao. 1 thing for sure, he ain't know what to fix nor where to get parts. Basically a Shawie has many different component, some are repairable by outside magician, some only the experts can do. Why general public hated Shawie much is because it uses EURO standard, including bolt and screw they uses TORX, which is NOT commonly available across magicians. I stay in Bdr Sri Damansara, but my magician is in Dengkil. Usually he can diagnose the problem, but repair I'll have to send back to Renautech. Reason being, my magician aint gonna buy a set of expansive wrench just to repair minority of Shawie.

Parts can be as cheap as maintaining a GaGa, coz most of their parts are common. Basically besides things that related to Engine and Gearbox, the rest are quite common with GaGa. Last week I broke my defogger/windscreen washer water spray motor. I went Jln Haji Eusoff(well known auto parts supplier street parallel with Jalan Ipoh) search for spare part. The moment I mentioned my Savvy's water spray motor, immediately the guy say "WHOAH!!!! You die lor! Savvy part f***ing expansive geh! Wait ar lemme check whether got stock sin..." later he come back and shout again "WHOAH!!!! This ranjiao motor will cost you RM120 wor, how ar?!". Ofcourse I no diao him and tarik kaki ady. So I went to Dengkil, my magician brought the broken motor to sparepart shop, ask them give 1 exactly the same. The spare part guy bring 1 Proton Saga water spray motor, guess how much is it? RM15 it is doh.gif Labor RM5. I also changed my front brakepads, using GaGa's brake pad. Front disc caliper service kit, also GaGa. Rear brake shoe, it is GaGa. Rear brake cylinders, you're right it is GaGa. Absorber, its GAP, again using GaGa. Couldn't imagine what happened if I buy all those by naming it Shawie infront of the sparepart guy.

Anyway, enjoy the car as much as you can. Go gentle on it, it's an European engine, tough and reliable. Don't trash it, as you and me know European engine repair will cost Euros, just like a Merc or Bimmer. If you treat it good, it will do wonders for you. Long live Shawie icon_idea.gif

3. Apply Grease to the clutch cable.

Wondering what else should i do?
coolant?engine oil?gear oil?brake oil?power steering oil?

My point is, getting GaGa parts to replace Shawie worth the extra mile. That however not applicable if money is not your concern. I certainly do, as I think I'm the 1st case getting GaGa parts into my Shawie. I do hope you guys participate and help us fight dishonest auto parts supplier.
Usually TT begun 8:30pm. To be safe, be there 9pm better. This week I think no TT as colleges is having their final rush for their thesis/assignment on their 1st term. Most probably next week. So I will post their TT list here if jadi.

Besides of engine and gearbox, almost everything from GaGa can be used. I can't name it at this time, perhaps you should really go through some of my posts. As and when I service, I will post pictures if it worth sharing.
My magician is in Dengkil, Jalan Banting. H&K / L S Gan Enterprise, next to Posofiz Dengkil. If you can wait, until next week TT please come and join us, we'll help you take a look and see what is necessarily. Ayam not saying Renautech not honest, but when they start to repair, they can really fix you car everything 1 shot, which can bore a hole in your pocket. At this point, I think prioritize repair/maintain whichever crucial is

Usually buying 2ndhen car meaning 5 oil 3 water must be change.

1) Engine oil
2) Brake oil
3) Powah steering oil
4) Clutch oil (not applicable for us, since we use cable)
5) Gear oil

1) Radiator water
2) Windscreen washer water(god knows what is inside from the previous owner)
3) Radiator breather tank's water

If possible, flush the petrol tank as well to be safe. Excessive residue in the tank can clog up your fuel pump. Take note, ayam not asking you to use any additive. Use your brain and think, if 1 can come up with some liquid that cost about 50 bucks to cure your engine no need to overhaul, probably all the magician had to close shop liao. Most (if not all) additive can cause even worst problem in the future.
*
I think i wana change engine oil, brake oil first, apply grease to clutch, clean TDC sensor....approximately how much if done in renautech?
Will Saturday Renautech pack of cars? how long can i expect to get my car back?
Radiator water/Radiator breather tank's water is for wat?

Thanks for ur replies, ur advice is greatly appreciated.Ayam noob in car,yet got a expensive to maintain car ...lolx

First of all, ayam not a magician myself. Ayam an amateur car enthusiast, so ayam as noob as you. As I explained earlier, my expectation of QUALITY is thoroughly low, and therefore you might not want to drink my cup of tea.

Here's the list my usual maintenance

  1. Engine oil, some unheard Korean brand mineral oil, visco 15W40 API/SL standard. RM32, I always buy the cheapest range of W40 oil, whichever month the brand got promo, I'll buy the 1.
  2. OSAKA chapalang oil filter RM8. But heard Plotong original more gooding cause got valve stopper inside can blocking engine oil fully drain back to oil sump over night. More protection to engine during cold start. I however, never believe that myth. It's Plotong yo whistling.gif I know Hongda and Toyoga's original oil filter got that function la nod.gif
  3. Oil sum drain nut gasket, buy a piece of gasket skin and cut. RM0.50 use many many many time. 1 gasket can last easily 2~3 times. Recently lost my balance of gasket skin, lazy to cut. These 2 rounds of oil changed didn't even use gasket yawn.gif
  4. Aircon cabin filter, get from SAMHOW in Cheras, RM15/piece, but 2 free 1. Usually every 20k mileage I change 1 piece, coz I got open window driving. If fully aircond and got maintain cabin cleanliness, can last up to 50k mileage without problem.
  5. Brake fluid, anything DOT4 standard, cheap. Should be around 10~15bucks.
  6. Coolant, I use premixed radiator fluid from ABRO. 1 gallon RM50 if not mistaken. Top up with tap water only.
  7. Front brake pad, use GaGa BOSCH should be around RM60
  8. Rear brake shoes, use GaGa FBK should be RM80
  9. Rear Absorber, use GaGa Gas base GAP also RM80 if not mistaken

You sendiri pandai-pandai adjust la. Renautech usually include all the labour on their part price, so you won't feel butthurt. If you gonna bring your own part there, I think William gonna give you an enema, give you a colorful bill after the service. So, it's still better that you pretend someone else give William a call, geh si geh si ask how much to service then only decide wanna do it there or do outside.

p/s: Do remember our torsion beam is made of TOFU. Given any chance if someone were to jack up your car, DO NOT let them use your torsion beam as jacking point! Torsion beam 1 piece RM1150 the last time I got quote from Plotong part centre. And that was for Plotong GaGa, if I mentioned Shawie, probably doubled the price liao whistling.gif Turn your steering back to centre after parked, to avoid powah steering fluid being press 1 side in the rack. Do not turn steering wheel when engine is off, otherwise excessive pressure in the UNcirculated power steering hydraulic will wreck your powah steering pump. When do you turn or tight parallel parking, beware of your steering action. Do not turn all the way until you hear "TOK" sound, or you're risking to break your steering rack. Not sure how they designed the car, but the steering stopper was designed further than the rack end. So, basically everytime you hit the "TOK" sound, you shorten your steering rack shaft life by few months, until 1 day it decided to give way and start spilling powah steering fluid.

Good luck and long live Shawie!

If RM570 include full belting (accessories belt) + tensioner + labor, then it's cheap. Osman BaBa is very reliable magician according to many input from our forumer despite I haven't send my car to him before. Price wise, Osman also honest. So, you may wanna look for fixgd to shed you some light. I for 1, will definitely go back renautech since I'm so used to send there.

interested to get a savvy (not really expensive i can get here)

may i ask you guys as experienced owner here about savvy's

1 - spare parts availability? all car will broke down one day no matter how good it is after all
2 - FC?
3 - heard got prob with AMT so planning to get M only, any comment appreciated

mostly just will be city driving car, go and back from office which is about 10km, maybe sometimes go back hometown which is arent far either

inb4 go get kancil/kelisa/kenari cause they expensive for a 2nd car
*
Ans for ur ques
1. Spare parts is more expensive compare to other proton of coz...coz less ppl use, lower demand
2.fc is very nice...can last me a week to and fro puchong to cyber weekdays, travel around pj jalan jalan during weekends,
around rm30 run for 230km+..
3. i see so many post comp1ain amt,got myself a manual and happy about it so far =)
Just manual jam uphill is very tiring nia.....so prevent jam lor...lolx,coz the clutch is heavy, but u will get used to it anyway..

I did consider buy "kancil/kelisa/kenari " before...but last minute changed decision to get a savvy...
coz those 06 07 kelisa needs 22k++ ==". . and the interior is not nice as sawi(personal oppinion)...engine is old. .
but of coz cheap maintainance lor. . .

sawi good wat,no resale value = cheap ,newer car for less moolah. . .
jz tat don't bang and take gd care of the car. . .

Hi everyone! Fellow "Shawie" (hehe been reading posts here) owner!

09' MT. I love this car more than anything in my world atm.  wub.gif

I haven't had any problems so far (50k KM so far only) besides the issue with starting the engine. I've only noticed it when its a "cold" start. Warm starts always work for me somehow.
Also when I drop the clutch, sometimes I hear a like a knock on the right side of the car and a little feedback from the steering about it. The same knock I hear when taking a fast sharp turn but I can't be sure which wheel its coming from. That and the AC takes one big performance hit on the engine... lol.

I'm not a crankhead per se but I'd surely like to take her for a good service. 55k being the next "scheduled" Proton SC stop.
FC has been a little on the high side lately though.

That said, from davidke20's post I see Renautech, Osman Baba + RS Auto. I live in Shah Alam Sek 7 area.
I can get to Renautech that's fine. Just looking for a little help smile.gif

Thanks everyone! I might drop by for the TT sometime too!

My sis has a 07' AMT over 100k KM now and we ran into major issues with the gearbox stalling, car not starting etc etc. Dad is threatening with selling it off and getting a Myvi for her  mad.gif she loves the Savvy more than anything too. I might take that down for a good shakeup too. Hopefully they don't hit my wallet that hard....

ppl always say hard to start engine is due to dirty TDC sensor...did u clean/mod the sensor b4?

Shawie is a good 2nd car if your budget is tight. However, maintenance not as friendly as we thought. Parts is slightly expansive on ENGINE and GEARBOX. You are right, AMT is even more troublesome. Manual for the win.

A good example our latest member w33wawa bought a Shawie 2009 for 16k, I personally drove the car out for a spin, the car is like new condition. His first service involved TDC sensor cleaning + wiring modification to prevent hard to crank start issue. Eventually this will happen to ALL Shawies be it manual or AMT. Engine oil change with full synthetic as well as synthetic gear oil. He's done many servicing & checking since its "NEW" from previous owner. Total damaged is 500+. Which is very worthwhile in my opinion.

Other than that, Shawie's timing belt is slightly expansive than other cars. Regular maintenance is as regular priced as any other cars. Some of Shawie weaknesses should address, for example weak steering rack & weak rear bearing, as well as weak rear drum brakes, tend to jam very often. Just take note when u feel the car draggy. Be sure to check if the brake cylinder is jammed. Always parked and adjust steering wheel to straight line to avoid power steering censor koyak, and also park with straighten steering wheel can reduced the stress to 1 side of your steering rack. Steering rack stopper was not proper designed, should avoid steering full turn. Usually people do full u-turn/parrellel parking tend to spin steering wheel very fast until hit the stopper create sound of "TOK!". This will stress the steering tie rod shaft and 1 fine day when the oil seal decided to give way, you'll be filling power steering fluid every other day.

1 last prevention u should take note, the torsion beam is an iron bar that link both your left & right wheels. Do not let anyone put a jack there to lift up your car. If u bent it, its gonna cost a bomb. Do take note, these are NOT only Shawie's weakness, it happened to many other vehicle as well. Just because its a freaking Plotong, people tend to bash a lot. Whilst I was fixing my bent torsion beam last time, an Altis drove in with a kang-kang rear wheels, but the Altis was less lucky had to replace a new beam for RM2200.

For servicing, please search for NOX our forumer's post. He got posted before on Renautech, Osman Baba & RS Auto contact number. They're all our beloved Shawie experts in KL Selangor area. Should you require further information, feel free to drop by our ever so loving little Shawie community. Love the Frenchie engine, adore the toilet bowl design. Live long & prosper Savvy! icon_rolleyes.gif
