Tiled wall or floor usually needs to be drilled or partially cut either to install some fittings, or add on some new attachment.

There is special drill bit for drilling tiles. Do not use normal masonry drill bit, it will be very hard to drill through the tiles and also it will cause excessive heat that might cause tiles to have crack line and break off.

You need a diamond tip drill bit like in the image below. Goto hardware shop and ask for it. Normal drill will crack the tile.

Very cheap only. Nama saja diamond drill. Last time bought less than RM5...
Why want to take the risk of breaking the tiles? This post has been edited by Bishop: Dec 12 2011, 05:17 PM |

Another thing you need to take note is, keep putting water on the tiles when you drill the hole, this is what my grill installer did, and the hole really superb nice without any damaging, I did take some photo during his installation and drilling the hole, he just use a mineral water bottle, make a hole on the cap then keep press the bottle to split out the water towards the place he want to drill, he told me that by putting water, the drilled hole will be very smooth (no crack rounding) due to some tribology facts

no hammering ..
drill slow... don't rush.. best if you put water on the site your drilling keeps the bit cool... most important is drill slow about 500 rpm for me at least la.. dont apply too much pressure.. else u will crack the tile |

If wall tile, as mentioned by others above, best to get a drill bit specially for drilling tiles.
Hardware shop got, should be <RM10. Carefully, slowly drill thru the tile first. After you hit cement, and hole in tile is big enough, then change to masonry bit and continue carefully. If floor tile, homogenous heavy duty type, I see my termite controller just drill thru with that heavy duty drill. When I ask him to be careful, he just smiled and drilled even faster. If confident can try. |
