KUANTAN: PAS is pushing ahead with its plans to shut down the casino in Genting Highlands if it takes over Pahang in the next general election.

Pahang PAS Youth chief Sharil Azman Abdul Halim said the only thing the party would allow the Genting Highlands resort to run was the theme park and other parts except the casino and gambling-related facilities.

“PAS has no intention of closing the whole place down as the highland resort is a major tourist attraction,” he said, reiterating the party’s stand on the matter.

Sharil Azman is the third person to state the party’s stand after two PAS assemblymen, Syed Hamid Syed Mohamad (Kuala Semantan) and Syed Mohammed Tuan Lonnik (Beserah), stated recently that the party could not tolerate gambling and would close the casino if the Opposition took over the state.

Sharil Azman said this in response to allegations in the state assembly that PAS intended to close down the resort if the Pakatan Rakyat coalition captures the state at the next polls.

Backbenchers Datuk Chuah Boon Seong (BN–Mentakab) and Datuk Pang Tsu Ming (BN–Semambu) had raised this matter on Wednesday.

Syed Mohammed had clarified to the two Barisan Nasional reps that only the gambling facilities would cease operations while other tourism-related activities would continue.

Shahril Azman said it was the PAS Youth wing that had come out with the proposal to shut the gambling business.

Meanwhile, when met on the sidelines of the assembly sitting, Syed Mohammed said he stood by the Islamic teaching that gambling is a sin.

“The party’s stand on gambling is also clear,” he said, adding that the country did not need to include in its coffers revenue from gambling.

He said it would be up to the Pakatan leaders to reach an amicable decision on Genting Highlands and its gambling activities should the Opposition alliance rule the state.

He said non-Muslims were free to drink and gamble and Islam did not prevent them from doing so, such as at their homes and other places of their own.

But one thing, Islamic Law must be implemented, non-muslims can do whatever they like but must help in preventing Muslims from going to haram places.

Illegal gambling will sprout like wild mushrooms and along business. There is huge demand for gambling not only within M'sia but from the region as well. We will lose out badly in terms of tourist dollars. Party shouldn't be attached to any race and religion. It's about believing what it can bring improvement in ur daily life and human rights. sorry to say, genting dont care any more about genting highlands in malaysia, as they shift their main focus to sentosa in singapore, and the newly open genting in las vegas, so if closing it down, it is no big deal to genting, just the country's income will be affected and more ppl lose their job, jeng jeng jeng

even the genting chairman is malay. alot of conflict of interest here n there. try taking malay from the board n see what the outcome, straight away gambling license suspense. its time to review the gambling license, for so long already

there is always good n bad about closing casino. the main attraction of genting is casino. casino can be closed down but the theme park/hotel can go on.

pros of closing casino
1) prevent people from gambling and can save more $$
2) no use paying so much tax for the govt bcos alot of misuse of funds or cronies. the more it get, the more it spent unnecessary or masuk pocket.
3) less commit suicide due to gambling loss
4) genting using loss gamblers $$ to pay tax
5) prevent gambler from lending $$ to gamble
6) prevent from gambler loss $$
7) more time for use/productive/healthy life for gambler. not always thinking of gambling day n night 24/7 with extra $$ or even borrow $$ from ah long.
8) Dont let genting earn all gamblers $$ in the long run.
9) Prevent accident going up n down to genting
10) gamblers is indirectly paying taxes for genting. dont let uncle lim have high salary pay out yearly and always LCLY and action. What goes up have to come down one day, and its not forever.
11) to avoid gambling habit in the long run for our children future.
12) Less family/financial problem due to gambling habits

Cons
1) Just less collection of tax from gambling. $$ indirectly from gamblers.
2) staff n workers can transfer out, just minor problem or find a more proper job.

its just gain + -. look at the bright side closing casino, will make more people gamble less.

The basic point is that one should not interfere with our lifestyle, as long as it doesn't affect muslims.

Cons
1) Just less collection of tax from gambling.  $$ indirectly from gamblers.
2) staff n workers can transfer out, just minor problem or find a more proper job.

its just gain + -. look at the bright side closing casino, will make more people gamble less.

i never gamble b4, so i dont mind if this casino is close. but lets be realistic here, u close here, ppl will go to singapore to gamble, moneys flow into singapore more, your neighbor country actually gain more benefit in long terms.

Let PR win the GE first lah. BN supporters should also vote for PR, just to see how this turn out. It would be very interesting. smile.gif

Anyway in the last elections, I seem to recall rumor has it that if Pahang fell to PAS, Genting will relocate their gambing halls to the Selangor side of Genting Highlands; assuming Selangor doesn't fall into PAS hands (by majority).

On a personal note, so what if Genting has to close down operations. I don't really care. I don't gamble. If I want to gamble I can go to Singapore and/or Macau.

alot of things is talking about convenience sack. if the casino is too far away, % of people are lazy to go there due to high hidden cost on accomodation, time and high convertion of currency rate, expensive etc. so no point go other country to gamble right.

go all the way to gamble, must be a hardcore gambler.

if its just across the street or 1 hour drive is different story.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 — Selangor DAP chief Teresa Kok warned political ally PAS to stop pushing for all Pakatan Rakyat (PR) states to adopt Kelantan’s controversial gaming ban for fear of losing non-Muslim votes in the coming general election.

“If PAS pushes this further, it’s not going to help them win more Malay votes and it might cost them non-Malay votes,” she told The Malaysian Insider today.

Kok was weighing in behind DAP national chairman Karpal Singh who had yesterday criticised the Kelantan government for enforcing a state law which, he said, had denied the rights of its non-Muslim citizens.

Earlier today, PAS secretary-general, Datuk Mustafa Ali defended the ban, saying the Islamist state’s anti-gambling policy was for the well-being of all communities, not just Muslims.

Kok said while she broadly agreed with Mustafa that gambling was socially unhealthy, she stressed that it did not mean the rights of the non-Muslims should be compromised, which Kelantan appeared to be doing.

Echoing Karpal, Kok, who is a Selangor executive councillor and holds the investment, industry and trade portfolio in the country’s most developed state, suggested it was not prudent for the PR leadership to enforce such a sweeping policy.

“Last time, all Pakatan states came out in one voice to say we do not agree to have gambling in this country,” she said.

Kok was referring to opposition pact’s united stand denouncing the Cabinet for awarding a sports betting licence to a company linked to tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan, which became a hot topic during the Hulu Selangor parliamentary by-election last year.

But she stressed that the DAP did not agree with PAS this time to suddenly clamp down on all forms of betting, including the ones legalised under federal law.

She noted the growing unhappiness among the minority non-Muslim community in PAS-ruled Kelantan after state enforcers raided several shops in Kota Baru selling Big Sweep lottery tickets and fined its owners despite it being legal under federal laws.

Gambling is considered a haram activity and punishable under Muslim law.

PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan sparked the debate with the secular DAP when he suggested that all PR states emulate Kelantan and ban all forms of gaming activities.

Other DAP leaders have also stepped forward to reject Nasrudin’s idea.

Lim Kit Siang, the secular party’s whip in Parliament, maintained PAS’s tough stand on betting was not part of the pact’s common policy and the three remaining PR states did not have to follow suit.

“The party’s position is that it is not common PR policy. What Karpal says reflects the party’s stand,” he told The Malaysian Insider today.

His son and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng joined in the fray on the prickly subject that could affect the warming political ties between the two opposition parties.

“Penang does not agree with PAS Youth chief. He speaks not for us. The existing ones in Penang remain untouched. Only expansion of new forms of gambling like sports betting not allowed,” Guan Eng said in a text message to The Malaysian Insider today.

Guan Eng, who is also the DAP’s secretary-general, did not elaborate when asked why his party was dead set against the PAS proposal.

if u ask me, i would say leave Genting's casino alone. nowadays, Genting got nothing interesting other than the casino.
If u close the Casino, Genting is as dead as mimaland. just do it like Singapore. implement casino levy.
when they do that, it will increase the country's income, also also everyone that go in to the casino will be check and their id needs to be scan.
so that can make sure that no muslim able to get into the casino at all.
also if they close down the casino. imagine how many people are going to be jobless.

I heard this since bangku sekolah lagi. If the day comes, Genting gonna move its gambling onto a cruise.

Anyway, I won't worry about this when pas take over pahang. The only thing I'm worried is that they will separate the male and the female sitting in cinema, no dark environment in public places such as cinema, female patron can't stay later than 12am in entertainment outlets etc. well, correct me if I'm wrong. Is this happening in kelantan now?

But pas can simply switch side and break down the majority. its really fragile. Unless they've predetermine that all those north states (kelantan / kedah / perlis / terengganu / pahang ) belong to Pas and the rest to PKR and DAP. So it'll be an interesting thing to see if its ever occur how does DAP and PKR calm down PAS.

Not Possible. When gambling closes, and if Genting doesn't beef up to match SG's Universal Studio theme park standard, Genting will surely die a natural death, coz mainly can only attract locals to visit. Foreigners may not want to visit theme parks that much, only family type may. Most of foreign customers' main purpose to visit is, obviously, the Casino.

i dont think PAS really mind about country GDP goes down or the rakyat eating sand for breakfast, for them that is a form of trial made by god to test their faith

is it enough for them if they can eat 1 meal for a day, and working in paddy field as long as everything around them is following the prophet lifestyle

Thats why i posted earlier it'll be an interesting thing to see how does the rest of the component party keeps pas in line. But the trending is clear. Even in Selangor. Shah alam the majority are PAS supporter up until banting there. They (the PR) could not afford to lose PAS as a partner. Im not surprise if they PAS started to dominate at Selangor too. Its only matter of time that they (PAS) realize that they are stronger than they believe.

How Malaysia archive majority 70 % Malays. I saw an interview yesterday, regarding a Malay families . A Guy ( mid 40s ) with 4 WIFES (as permitted in Syria LAW ) living in a small terrace house with over 20++ CHILDREN S running all over the house, ! When the interviewer ask him can you name all your children s name he could only answer 5 of them ! I do HOPE all of them get well educated and be ready to face the tough living ahead !

Selangor will be dominated by them too soon. The recent study shows that more and more malays in selangor are accepting Pas more than the rest of PR compoenent. Why do you think they're so vocal about this issue in the first place?

guys please dun blame the whole party of PAS. Is the leader who has extremist thought that influence the followers follow his action. PR will be strong and less songlap if PAS extremist leader being pull down.

PAS started this because know they can control more majority in western. Push come to shovel pkr and dap can retain penang while the rest controlled by PAS. Johor / soviet sabah and sarawak would be forever alone to bn.

PAS, PKR, and DAP are all important for PR and PR will become weak if either one party was isolated. I believe in the end PAS leader will not simply screw up PR but will be wise enough to associate with PKR and DAP leaders to make Malaysia more develop and better country than a 54 years of ruling by songlap BN. end story
