not really, there is a power filter hidden somewhere within the driftwoods for the 1st and 2nd pic.
for the 3rd pic i use canister filter as u can see from the pic.
all i did was a weekly 10-20% water change tats all.
in fact this kinda setup is even less tedious than fully planted tank.
i only use low tech plants, so far i dint put any co2 and fertilizer yet.

its not tat hard to setup tis kinda tank.
juz need to find a few piece of suitable driftwood
arrange it nicely and lay the water tube.
for the filteration u can buy canister filter, its abit expensive but worth it coz u would have less headache. I got one canister and another 2 DIY filteration system.

for the plants u can juz use low tech plant like anubis, nana, cryptocorene etc
for the lighting, i juz diy using normal fluorescent tube or u can buy ready make light from LFS.

u may check out my first pic, i lay the water tube around the driftwood,
and punch some holes along it, so when the pump is on, water will drip down from the water tube to the driftwood..

after sometime when the moss and other plants outgrown the driftwood, the water tube is no longer visible from outside.

A mist system on top will allow u to grow riccia or moss on drift wood smile.gif

ok bro,
i will try to snap some pic of my tube and pipe from my tanks.
good thing is i just setup the tank, so the moss and plants have not yet fully covered it yet.
but it also make the upper part look very lauyah due to the exposed tubes and tied knot.

as for the filtration, i will also post some pic out later.
its DIY using tupperware and watertube bought from hardware shop.
total cost about 60-70 bucks so its not really tat cost effective because a cheap canister filter only around 100 something nowadays.
I am doing it for fun and satisfaction and just for those outdoor tanks, coz i tink normal canister wont last long if put outside the house.
If your tank is located indoor better to get a proper canister.

nono, dont cabut anything..
this filter not suitable coz its not strong enough.

u will need to use powerfilter and a strong one to be able to push the water through the filtering material back to the tank..

i normally use those 30watt and above
about 2000 litre per hour
price around 20-35

only strong pump like the above can push the water through the filtering media and back up to the tank again.

its quite troublesome to DIY, just get a proper canister will be better value actually.. peace of mind XD

RM150 is affordable. My local LFS -biggest ( Ipoh) got their stocks from Penang- KW and CTY.
Everything is slightly higher. And the stores also located at Golden triangle!!.

never know this thread in LYN.
Luqee, seems you are 1 step ahead of me.. hehe

The background you buy it at LFS. around rm20 IINM.
but it will come with 2 pieces. unless you refering to the DIY platform, DIY waterfall etc..

Plan to make riparium for my 2ft tank. we can just use the sand taken from river right?

my favorite riparium

u can get from river or waterfall but make sure u got them higher up stream.
Also remember to clean it because you dont know what kinda bacteria or germs it might contain.

This is what i did to my waterfall sands.

1. wash clean with water
2. Pour boiling water on it
3. spread it out on the floor and let the sun dry them

after this only i will put it in my terrarium but after the above process most of the nutrient will be gone.
u will have to start from zero.

i believe most LFS will carry those background.
Dont cut them into half, its much more hassle free if u remove the middle glass bracer and put the background in.
afterwards juz glue back the middle glass bracer with silicone.

however if ur doing riparium, having the middle glass bracer is kinda ugly in my opinion. tongue.gif

ps; remember to silicone the background properly to avoid it coming off after everything been setup.

for the background i dun think u can glue it like spreading kaya on your bread.
u need to silicone it on the edge to secure it on the tanks. biggrin.gif

hurm, cutting the brace itself seems hard for me since my razor cant even go through between the glass to cut the silicone glue.
so instead, planning to ditch the background idea for the time being since my 2ft tank is currently not large enuff in width length (30cm).
any comments on my layout test scape? playing with the hard-scape while waiting enough budget to get holland sand and submersible water pump.
*substrate gonna be about 2 inches deep so the scape will look like mini island like in riverside
*on the left side, will topup with amazonia on top of the lava rocks for emmersed plants while output filter will constantly water it there and hopefully the barricade rocks will become mini waterfall ..lol whistling.gif
*branches, some of them will be tied with creep plants like pokok duit2 and btween brances will be T. ionantha's.
*Right side will be the basking spot for turtles, underneath will be placed water pump to regulate flow and redirect them to input filter

after adding the gravel, and the hardscape will be higher, water level i guess must be middle level point of the barricade rocks
the wood planning to change to more hard wood type later when everything is complete, but for now use that first la, also 80-90% of the wood will not not touch water and hopefully it will not rot. but fear the wood will soak the water at the bottom and all those branches will end up wet/damp.

filter, planning to use internal filter, hidden behind the immersed plants or at the back of the woods & rocks.
if not, will use my unused 2213 la.

an island with the barricaded rocks rite ?
seems interesting, really looking forward to your completed tank.

user posted image

something like this rite ?

but to me, 2ft seems abit small to do this kinda scape.
a 3ft should be juz nice.

as for the wood, as long as the bottom is in the water, it will seep into the woods i believe.

if u put internal filter somemore, its goona be quite pack and you will have to consider when u need to clean it next time.

sorry for all the questions, all the best icon_rolleyes.gif

want to have that kind of tank, the bottom one but since lack of space, budget and parents permission to keep more than 1 aquarium, have to do this one and put inside my cramped room sweat.gif but i prefer all of them are in my room though. help me relax.

the wood will have to wait till i found a good and cheap replacement, LFS charging them quite expensive for me.
yup, will reconsider on the 2213 filter then, much easier and will not cramped the small tank.

dont care if youre asking me a lot of questions, i prefer it to be that way, easier to improve my skills and helps eliminating careless mistakes which might had been done by previous peers. hehe

Im planning to create something like this for my turtle tank. Half water half land. Maybe ill add some frogs or lizards. but i need help.

Attached Image

1. How do i make sure that the soil doesn't fall into the water and in the end become level throughout the whole terrarium, since my turtles are quite aggressive? should i have a barrier to keep the soil in place?

2. what type of soil should i use if i don't want to cloud my water?

Thanks in advance!

dont mix turtles with lizs or frogs or newts or salamanders... they will get bitten or worse, eaten.

Can I ask what type of branch you are using for you tank? I'm refering to the picture in a few replies above. And also, where do you get it from?

I'm using a root of a small tree (dunno what kind of tree) I found near a pond. I washed it and placed it into the tank. Now, there are a few tiny, translucent mushrooms growing on it. So far, everything is okay. The newts don't eat them so I leave the mushrooms alone.

well, one advice, before putting any wood into any tank, i usually boil them up to kill those unwanted stuffs.
in my case, since they are too big, i just dumped them in a basin, filled with hot boiling water till it covered all of them, then let them untill water is cool down and dry it right back.

the wood im using is a mixture of cut wood i found along the road by the MPSJ (lol) and my longan tree. i found out, hard wood are better since they take a very long time to rot.
the MPSJ woods already starts to become britte and break easily lol

need to refer to the sifus here la, my method i got them from my planted tank method hehe

Yes, that is the powerfilter that is available at every LFS.

u have to select the rite choice of plants, not every plants suitable to be planted in a terrarium.
its easier to use nana, microsorium or any plants they sell in lfs that comes with driftwood but they are abit exp.

for economical ways, u can gather those plants tat grow beside the drains biggrin.gif

can take a few extras and sell them cheaper here?
i know some of us in here, wont mind paying for it rclxms.gif
besides, this way, we can eliminate invasive species of flora and fauna in our country brows.gif , well, if you know how to differentiate for one tongue.gif

use to make trips to collect stuff from the wild
but lately too bz already sweat.gif

anyway, those plants collected from the wild need to be quarantine and clean before entering the tanks.
furthermore, they might not survive in our tanks in the end doh.gif

therefore for convenience purpose buying from LFS is a much better option imho.

well, its really not recommended to keep turtle in terrarium.

those soft shell will literally turn ur terrarium upside down, use to kept one before in a half concrete tank with pepples, it like to dig inside and cover himself until left his head.

all ur arrangement will be ruin by it.

and for the red eared sliders, while its not as destructive as the soft shell but it poo alot, its goona be very hard to maintain clean water in ur terrarium.

for now it still ok coz they are small but when they grow bigger u will have trouble.

unless u have a big tank with powerful filteration. else a bare minimum tank will be sufficient for them.

hurm.. so far, the small CSST usually tries to dig alot... so planning to put barrier rocks while the rest just plain gravel or sand.
for the RES issues, barrier rocks will prevent the RES from eating my plants(immersed), and the plants will help a bit by sucking down those excess poo, and using 2 filters, eheim 2213 and hob or internal filter rated 500l/h type..sigh~
later after 2 years, need to throw them to a cement pool like youve said , since cannot fit the tank already lol

Anyone tried keeping predatory fish like oscars or mala wolf in such design?
since they need floor space then height( I think) . Maybe it can be made possible? in a 3ft and above tank?

To house salamanders. Nothing is more important than salamanders. They're like Pokemon. I gotta collect them all. rclxm9.gif
I have to start searching for driftwood and branches.

Only free water? TV? Food? Hahaha..

to be safe, i would suggest u to buy two 4ft x 2inch 6mm glass and silicon it at the front and back.

u can remove the horizontal brace coz it doesn't help much.

since you are keeping strong predatory fish like toman which may grew big, its better to be safe than sorry.

use a smaller razor loh lolz..
but since u fill up half volume i think its fine.

one easy way to check is by filling up to 80-90%,
take a look from the top and see whether it got curve up in the middle of the tank or not?
or use measuring tape to check left right and middle to see whether they are of the same length or not.

its very dangerous esp genie's tank which is juz 5mm. if got ppl in front when it breaks sweat.gif

I've a 3ft x 1.5 x 1ft tank with 6mm glass, non-curve tank. Is there any other way to reinforce the tank without using front to back braces? Or without using any braces at all? (the stupid braces prevent big, one-pieced driftwood from being placed into the tank...)

3ft tank wif 6mm is safe enough without brace. only longer tank with thin glass need brace.

Yup, yup. I guess I didn't join ealier because I didn't know what category my tank fell under. To me, it was a half filled tank with some plants and driftwood. It's good to know it was a riparium.

if u want to have your own customized aquarium, u will have to prepare to fork out money mate.
doesnt matter u order direct from LFS or glass shop, its goona be costly for non standard tank.

If u wana know why let me explain to you in a simple example, the figure are juz a rough estimation for your understanding only.

let say one BIG piece of glass can make three (3) 3 Feet Tanks.
now because of your customized tank this piece of glass can only make one (1) 3ft tank plus your customize tank.
so who is going to bear the off cut ? obviously you tongue.gif

in short, you prolly have to pay the price for 2x3ft tanks due to the material used/wasted.
and then the manpower, for normal standard tanks they already have the frame where they juz need to slide the glass in and silicone it but for ur customize tank prolly they dont have the measurement so extra effort is needed to complete it.

which is why its much more costly compare to normal standard one, and of coz the LFS would want to earn some profit as well so prolly that will add another 10-20% of the cost.

are you sure that 6mm is enough?
i using online glass thickness calculator, standard 3feet would need at least 8mm for braceless tank.

why not ?
for terrariums we only fill up half or less of the total height of the tanks.
alot of 3ft tanks in the market not even 8mm nowadays and most only have side brace.

hmm. i see, then better make front panel only half of height? it would be better view.
ya, standard 3feet tank in market is mostly 6mm, some even cheating make 4mm glass, which is very very risky.

yeah, that will be very nice for this type of tanks but to do that normally have to custom order it.
for existing tanks very hard or troublesome to cut off the panel and then silicone it back.

so normally i will just use standard tanks and fill up half the water,
but there is another problem as the dry portion of the tank will become blur overtime sad.gif

yeah there are unethical seller outside doing stuff like tat,
even with brace a 4mm is juz a time bomb waiting to explode sweat.gif

so to get rid of that blur~ is it the same as cleaning a planted tank, by scrubbing with a sponge?

tat doesnt help much actually, have u ever seen those car light ?
after sometime u can see there is a layer of blur stuff on the cover.
its something like tat and scrubbing can reduce it but cant completely remove it.

maybe can use some chemical to remove it, but tat will be impossible unless u clear the whole tank doh.gif

lol.. i tink no matter which state you are, you can find interesting flora and fauna if u know where to look for.

we just go along the old road and try our luck in any of the pool of water beside the road, or drain next to palm estate.

sure can find at least some croaking gourami or betta one.
snake head also very common, saw a few nest with the fries.

using those magnetic cup or suction cup is one way of doing it but not tat natural but once the plants outgrown its barely noticeable anymore. another way is using driftwood to form a wall and fill it up with gravels, peat or spagnum moss.

To remove the braces, we use razor blade's razor?
How powerful the powerhead should be when using a 2ft?
If i use 3D backgorund and hide the filter behind ,it would be crowdy. kan?
A LFS is selling a small canister filter at rm88. But din check out the specs.
Another LFS is selling a medium canister filter at RM150, no brand.

yes

How powerful the powerhead should be when using a 2ft?

just a small one will do, a standard 2ft tank is about 50 liter. normally we use a pump with a circulation of 10x
so a 500l/h pump is enough

I dont get what u mean by hiding the filter behind the background sweat.gif
u mean hiding the filter behind the tank or inside the tank ?

birchir (polypterus) i read can comm with anything that eat meat.
But make sure the size is a match. Oscar fast grower, poly slow.

So bigger poly is bigger money. My oscar is 16cm..sheez~~ and here i thought my baby is only 10cm

no idea as it come stored inside a plastic bag , label said tree bark, didn't molest it cos i have no use of it laugh.gif
they also sell those mangrove wood very cheap , rm4.50 for a 15cm-20cm++ big chunk.
if i go again i will check for you. I take the assumption it is real tree bark wood cos it put beside the real mangrove wood and the label
didn't said artificial tree bark.

And those cheap mangrove wood & stone on shelf, price range RM3 till RM30(big chunk) , i use those in my crayfish/vampire crab tank, so far so good.
Just need to boil and let it settle in a bucket for few days to leech out tannins.

This shop is on the second floor of Tesco , around 10k sq. Got Pet hotel(boarding, day care) beside selling aquatic plants , fish , newt , frog , scorpion
etc. Their are giving free membership for purchase of RM10 for first 3000 customer. Discount is 5%.
Sad to said this is the only LFS in KL that carry the most range of Moss , Flame , weeping , coral moss , Java , Xmas , Fissiden , Pelia etc
Other so said Big LFS only brother to carry Xmas & Java. Shame on them.

I think you will like this place as this the only LFS i find lot of weird stuff like albino frog , firebelly newt , imported crayfish . army crab ,
primitive fish, etc , the only shortcoming is that they only carry few brand of aquarium accessory/products. No Eheim, No ADA , No Aquazonic
No Hailea , No Resun and.. cry.gif

Pls remember DON"T buy the RM1.50 Check Valve from there. it have fault , only let pass like 40% of air (like tersumbat).

Hi Guys.

This is my first setup, I'm so eager to start with terrarium tank. I just have no clue on where to start from. blush.gif

1. Does it require any soils as the based ?
2. What sort of water filter you guys using?
3. What kind of plants that suitable to this kind of setup?

1. Soil/grave; is optional but it will look nicer with soil/gravel.
2. filter preferably using canister filter
3. moss, java fern or nana also can use for this kinda setup

u need to keep a high humidity for your nana.

Thanks for the quick info:

1. Soils- Can we use aqua soils?
2. filter- Currently im using EHEIM Pickup 45, it's internal water filter. Do i need to change it to external filter?
3. Plants- Will start bit by bit, but the most basic setup need to be there.

wat soil is up to your own preference or budget.
you may use internal filter but it will be very tedious to maintain/clean/hide once your terrarium is mature

show some picture of your tank first.
most plants that can fully submerge can grow out and become semi submerge either, it depends on what kinda setup u want to make.

what kinda animal u plan to keep inside this paludarium ?

Your answer will have to depend on what is your tank size & how your water system works. Is it open or closed tank? Post a picture for us.

if not mistaken you already put moss on the wall right?
you can try java fern, anubias, moss, nana on those woods and landscape material.

as for those inside the water, you can try Cryptocoryne

you need to mist it or use power filter to distribute water.
or you can cover the top with glass to prevent moisture from escaping.

like broken_string says, yeah, u need to mist often or cover it up.
for terrestrial, nursery is a good place to start.
other alternatives are tarantulas hobbyist since nowadays most of them are opting real live terrarium plants for their T's,
or if you feeling a bit of of adventurous,
star moss can be found nearby small streams and waterfall or garden moss can be found in your own garden and nearby drain

I have an old 4 ft tank that I am trying to set up as a low maintenance, low tech aquarium. When I was Googling I found this "Riparium" thingy that caught my interest, and ended up in this thread for hours. Very informative and I wish it can continue.

all this paludarium is very low maintenance and low tech.
i setup it at my hometown, only go back to take care it every 2 weeks.
it rely on sun light as it was outside of the house.

so far i only do 3ft tank, a 4ft tank will look very nice, even better if its height is more than the normal 1.5ft.

currently i am trying to setup another paludarium but its not ready yet.

i am not really expert but its more or less like planted also.

u lay the sand and do the hard scape first, then you add in the water and plants.
since u wont be able to use co2, just use moss and other low tech plants like anubis or nana.

u can check my first post and get some rough idea on how to position the drift wood
see which type you prefer

Should be OK. Gonna be out of the water mostly Will focus mainly on land plants initially and will see later about the under water stuff.

its up to you depending on what type of habitat you want to make.

if you want to simulate strong river current then 1 output to simulate strong water current.
if you want to simulate dripping effect then u can dispersed it using multiple water tubes

either way is fine..

Need advise. Today i went to an old chinese restaurant "cha sat" and i saw an aquarium. Suprisingly that aquarium has a big turtle, one small fish and a small tortoise. The aquarium is quite deep so the turtle and the fish can survive but not the tortoise. The tortoise has to constantly swim up onto the surface to breathe. Im not sure how to talk to the shop owner since its my first visit. Is there anything that can be bought ? Like a stand/etc for this tortoise ? Imagine the tortoise has to swim up every 3-5 mins for air ><
