Need some advise on this. Planning to upgrade my kit lens to either 24-70 or 17-55. I'm using D7000 and most of the time I'm taking photo of my son. Which is a better option?

IMO, depends on ur budget and your future plan. As for me, im tend to get 2470 coz im planing to move to FX system sooner. But if your planing to stay in DX, 1755 is more than enough, since its the King of DX!!

Yes, this is one of the reason I'm leaning towards 2470.

Personal opinion and experience (no son, but daughter  tongue.gif ):
Get a prime lens, 35mm f/1.8G DX or 50mm f/1.8G.
For f/2.8, the Tamron equivalent (non-VR) 17-50mm f/2.8 (for about RM1200 or less), it will do fine for your requirement. Unless you're using it for job or you have $$$, then go for the Nikkors.
*
I already have the 35mm but I like to shoot shoulder height so not so suitable. I like the sharpness of Nikkor lens.

IMO, unless u plan to upgrade to FX later or u really need a f2.8 zoom with long focal length, go for the 17-55..

the 24-70 in DX will have a focal length of 36-105mm, which is almost same as ur kit lens...

plus u oledi have a 35mm f1.8... still not enough for your son's portrait pics??  hmm.gif
*
Yeah I have the 35 mm but I like to shoot shoulder height. 70 mm seems to be a better option. That's why I'm leaning towards 2470 instead of 1755.

QUOTE(ojtee @ Jan 3 2012, 11:49 AM)
same opinion here, plus the 2470 has more reach for candid shots, especially if he runs around alot, FoV would be similair for a portrait FL on the other end
*
Yes, this is the main reason why I'm leaning towards 2470

i plan to eventually buy a ford mustang...plan...a plan which can take forever tongue.gif

so as usual, buy with ur needs now.
and is possible buy used, you can eventually sell it off for very minimal loss.
*
Yes, agreed with you. Looking for used lens at the moment.

Hi, just got myself a new lens Tamron 18-270 PZD. I found the VC seems to be having some problem. When I switch on the VC, the picture will get blurr but without VC it's ok. Also found that how fast you press the shutter will also affect the result. If you press the shutter fast then it will not get blurr. If you press 1/2 way then hold for a while before pressing full, it will become blurr. This only happen when the shutter speed is slow (eg 1/40 s at 270 mm). As you increase the shutter speed, it will become better. Here is some photo to show. Is my lens defective or this is normal?

Not sure your case, but as I know, you need to give some time for the VC to work and settle down before taking the shot.
But your second scenario about holding for a while seems contradict with my above statement.

You can experiement more, if still same send to the shop and compare with their other unit.

Thanks for the quick response. That's what I thought too initally but seems like eveything is opposite now. Blurr with VC.

The photo looks like the VC is "still" working?
Did you notice the VC working, is the image in the viewfinder shaky? Or possible the motor problem?

I think better send to shop to confirm and compare with other units.
*
The VC is working as I can see a slight jerk when the VC kicks in. Already send back to the shop. They will get another unit for me as they do not have stock at the moment.

loks like another D7000 problem has surfaced

only way to confirm is to bring it back to the shop and try with other units,or it may very well be the AF bug on the D7000, as its known to be not so compatible with 3rd party lenses......
*
Not sure if it's D7000 problem or Tamron VC got problem. Will check it out with the replacement unit when it's available.

QUOTE(Everdying @ Jan 18 2012, 02:09 PM)
so are u saying the tamron is the only lens u have?
looks more to me like the VC got terbalik, and instead of OFF its ON and vice versa tongue.gif

also for me, i wouldnt trust any VC / VR except for VR2 to really get the claimed 3-4 stops of reduction.
*
Nope, I have the 18-105 kit lens and 35 mm 1.8 lens. 18-105 no issue. The shop also said maybe they terbalik the VC switch...ha ha ha... Made in China what to do....

If terbalik, then when you turn on VC, the VC should be working already; but seems you notice it working, so I guess it's not terbalik, haha
*
That's true. I can see the VC kick in. Probably the VC module is over compensating.

i think this is related to ur problem. try reading the first part of his 1750 vc review. tamrons vc works abit strange IMO

Thanks for the link. I'm aware of this. In fact, I tried to wait a while after 1/2 pressing the shutter but the result is worst than immediate press (see earlier picture I attached). Looks like the VC module got problem.
