Today's News: Rise in household debts moderates.. PRE-EMPTIVE MEASURES BITE: Growth falls to 12.5pc last year from 13.7pc in 2010

MALAYSIA’S household debts, which have been on an upward trend since 2009, grew at a more moderate pace last year as measures introduced by Bank Negara Malaysia began to take effect.Outstanding household debts grew by 12.5 per cent compared with a growth of 13.7 per cent in 2010, according to the central bank’s latest annual report.

Borrowers in the lower-income categories and residing in urban centres, however, face more challenges in managing their financial obligations. Household borrowings continued to be primarily concentrated in financing the purchase of residential properties and motor vehicles which accounted for 64 per cent of outstanding household debts.
