Percy Jackson & The Olympians series is a fantasy trilogy about how ancient Greek mythologies continues into the modern world, the world that we live in today.
Based on the books, the immortal Gods of the Olympians still exist in our world, and they had adapted themselves with the modern civilizations. The books explains that they follow the heart of the fire of the West, which started in Greece, then moved to Rome (and that's why Roman myths are similar to Greece's, but with different names for the Gods) then it moves around to various places with time, as they adapt themselves with places of power. And now the Olympus, the city of Gods is in America, located above the Empire States Building while the Underworld now exists under Los Angeles etc.
And after all this times, the gods has spawned so many godlings. Demi-gods. Or should I say heroes. This is actually the result of their affairs with the mortals. Like Hercules and many more. Unfortunately, most of the modern godlings died before they reached their teenage years. This is because during puberty, their powers started to shows and it attracts evil beings. Evil beings kill godlings. That's what they do. Therefore the gods assigned a keeper for each identified godlings. The keeper (a satyr) will be responsible to detect and bring all the godlings to a special camp where they will train to protect themselves before they were returned to the world.
And the big three Gods, Zeus, Poseidon & Hades are not suppose to have any godlings after World War 2. It is because in the book it was explained that WW2 is an indirect influence of the battle between the offspring of the 3 Gods. And seeing how the battle affects the mortals, they made a pact to never sire a demi-god ever again. Other Gods & Goddesses may do so, since they are not as powerful as those 3.
Here Percy Jackson, a New Yorker came into the story. He just turned 12 years old, and a fury attacks him on a school trip. Then he met The Fates at a local fruit stand, which he saw cutting the string of life (well, he saw them cuts a silvery yarn string, but still). Then when he was on a vacation with his mother, his best friend came to his house, and apparently, he is Percy's keeper and a Minotour is right behind him. Then his mother rushes him to the camp when they were attacked just before reaching the camp and his mother was killed defending him. To his surprise he defeated the Minatour and managed to reach the camp. From there his story began.
The godlings at the camp were separated by 12 cabins, with 4 of them is empty. Each cabin represents the Gods & Goddesses of the Olympians. The child of a particular God goes to his parent's Cabin. The Empty cabins were Zeus, Poseidon, Hera (she is the Goddess of Marriages, so of course she won't go and having affairs with mortals) & Artemis (she swears she'll never marry and stay a maiden, what more to explain?)
He were sent to the Hermes cabin, since he is undetermined, which means they don't know which God is his father, and Hermes, being the God of Travel, Messenger & Thieves accepts all people. Then during an accident where an evil being managed to slips through into the camp, Percy were seriously hurt and thrown into the lake. Then the lake heals Percy. And with the glows that heal him, a Trident symbol came along with it. Which means Poseidon just claims him as his son.
This creates controversy among the Gods, since Poseidon had made a pact. And now Zeus started to accuse Poseidon steals his trademark Lightning Bolt through his son. What happened next? Percy travels with his keeper, grover and the daughter of Athena, Annabeth to find the bolt in the Underworld and returns them to Zrus. More? Read the book ler! Aiyaaah!
This books is very interesting, with references towards the Greek myths which I found very fascinating. The stories in the book did not clash with the legends, but it successfully integrates them. I would recommend it to any fantasy book lover, especially those who is a sucker for Greek heroes and monsters myth.
Book 2 were just out a few months ago and book three will follow in January 2007. And the first book (the lightning thief) film rights were bought by Twentierth Contury Pictures.
