The best is to stick wih something we like and that our dogs can tolerate and show improvement. That's my opinion.

Orijen is a Canadian brand.... kinda pricy... so is very rare. I think he mentioned somewhere in kopitiam that he uses it now for his maltese...

Be careful, Greenies can cause indigestion and gut blockage if it is eaten to fast and too much. The best is still brushing their teeth by using a cloth and some baking soda water, just wiping the teeth is enough.

As said before, these treats are junkfood to dogs and it is not good for their health. So avoid giving treats like Sleeky or JerHigh, loads of fats and sugars and also salt which can cause harm when in their senior age. Treats such as those also promotes bad teeth and bad breath.

If you buy treats, get the hard biscuits kind... those meaty looking ones are full of gels and starch and sugar and salt. So if you need to do training, get the biscuit kind. I normally use IAMS, not bad coz use a bit only as treats.... Sleeky also produces biscuit type which I also use.

If can, you can always give little cooked egg as treat.

Your puppy is humping... he is not hamsap lah.... he is doing it to show he wants to be dominant over you. He is still a puppy so you can teach him not to do it. If you let him do it more, it will become a habit.

What you do is once your dog hump your leg, quickly shout NO and hold your dog down and get your leg away. Some people use a method to make the dog scared of doing. If your dog doesn't react to the NO and pulling away. Get a tin can, place some pebbles inside. When your pup start to do, take the can and shake near his head very loudly. Dogs do not like sudden loud sounds. If you do this often, your pup will learn that humping would cause loud sound that he doesn't like.

Actually I got a female lab that humps not us but my male dog.... terbalik wan hahaha... but she does it for dominance. We scare her with loud noises... so now when she tries to hump, just say a big NO and she won't do it at all. Good way lah.

The tin with pebbles is a training tip from some dog training books.

Actually, if follow AKC standards, any colour is suitable for shih tzu but for show quality, it must have a white collar(white neck).... also the white part on the head is called a blaze or star. This will make the shih tzu look more outstanding and attractive. When the mouth or muzzle is also white, it gives a cleaner look. Eyes should have dark eye rims like mascara and has to have a dark mask on the face. Ears, normally the tips of the ears are darker.

To choose a shih tzu is not really by colour unless you are looking for show markings. When choosing a shih tzu, it should have a roundish domed head, large eyes that do not buldge out, has a muzzle with a 1inch stop or less but not too flat till turned up like a pug. The teeth must be even and undershot. Posture is also important for if the posture is wrong, then the pup can have a weird walking gait.

Heheh... a little knowledge is good to know. Anyway, if you guys need cheap books, can always go to Pay Less book stores, even though 2nd hand, the books are really good and got quality. Got a section on pets and I did see a lot of books on dogs. Anyway, those website links that I posted are so far the best in standard information.

Harness is better. Shih tzu got sensitive neck, if they keep pulling, can cause breathing problem for them. It won't tangle so fast. After use, just comb hair again.

Just apply corn starch to the wound. The powdered form. Just leave it overnight. Normally will dry and heal by itself. After you see the wound has dried, then you can wash with some antiseptic like mild dethol solution. That's all.

A pup will mature to its teens around 6 to 8 months, small dogs will reach adulthood around 1.5 years while big dogs around 2 years.

About the bread feeding. You see, bread has yeast inside.... and it can bloat in the stomach and gut. So this is why we should take precaution when feeding bread. The best is to not feed any.

Puppies can easily forget to do the right thing. This is why you must repeat the training everyday. Do not expect your pup to learn and remember so fast.

When she bark, you go and see her rite? Coz your pup will know that to get to your weakness is by barking. Ignore her barking, then she will think that barking is no use and later quiet down. If you scared disturb the neighbours, then go to your neighbours, apologies and tell them you are training the dog so it may be noisy for a few days.

Added on April 17, 2007, 10:56 amPicky eating.... the number 1 cause for picky eating is letting them taste human food as puppies.... My previous shih tzu was very picky coz I was young, didn't know better and feed him tidbits .... regret coz for the next 12 years, he was the worst eater. Now my CKCS, I have not introduce human food.... only natural food like Fruits and vegie.... but it was only given to her when she was 1 year.... during puppyhood, only kibble.

So just stick to kibble... even the treats sold for dogs can cause your dog to be picky about food. Don't get poisoned by their cute faces and puppy eyes.... be stern.

You can try Nutriegde.... got a good taste.

A brand specifically for shih tzu? I have not seen that brand before.... get the name then maybe we can see if it is good or not.

Cod Liver oil is good, same as canola oil, olive oil and palm oil. Of course cod liver oil is better lah since it is a fish oil. I use a mixture of oils that I bought from an organic shop. It is a special oil for dogs, cod liver oil, sunflower oil, erm.... a few others which I can't remember. Basically any oil supplement for dogs is good, be it human or pet brands....

Itchy skin is the sign of allergy to shampoo or you did not wash off all the shampoo residue from the fur. High protein diets also can make dogs itchy.

RC is a top super premium dogfood.... so to compare with holistic, hard lah but generally holistic dogfood is the best.

I would recommend eaglepack, innova, go natural, evolve, canidae, nutriedge and california natural but then california natural is lower in oil and also doesn't taste that nice, so picky dogs would have a problem eating it hahahah

You cal always buy the normal cod liver pills.... what I do is take a knife, poke a hole or make a slit and squeeze out all the oil onto the food and mix it and give my dog to eat.

My late shih tzu hated beds... place him on 1 and he will quickly jump off.... sigh.... but this ckcs is so so manja.... sometimes when we sleep on the floor, she will park her butt or face in our face or neck to sleep.... suffocating us with her fur hahahah.
