Hi everyone. Interested in starting a commercial aircraft collection here, so want to ask if there are any advices and guidelines to recommend? Thanks.

Yay. A fellow starter. I just started myself. I guess you can start with picking a scale. The more mainstream scales available in Malaysia is the 1:400, 1:200 and 1:500. (they are arranged in a descending order of popularity). There are 2 major brands of diecast aeroplane makers, namely Phoenix and Gemini Jets. You also have Herpa, Aeroclassics and Hogan. Gemini Jets and Phoenix share the moulds of the aeroplanes and they release a set of new aeroplanes every month. They are the main 1:400 scale makers. They occasionally make 1:200 models as well. If you wish to collect 1:200 scale models, there's JC Wings. Although I'm not familiar with this scale. The 1:500 scale is led by Herpa. Again, not familiar with this area of the aviation hobby. Well, I collect 1:400 models as they don't take up that much space and they offer an excellent level of detail. If you wish to start with Malaysia Airlines, you may run out of luck with the older models as they are sought after by other long-time hobby veterans willing to shell out tons just for the model. Available in the market now for Malaysia Airlines is the A380, A380 with 100th A380 written on it, 747-400 (Putrajaya), A330-300 New, A330-300 Oneworld, A330-300 old, A330-200 old, 737-800 New, 737-800 old, 737-400 old. If you're lucky, you might find the 777 Visit Malaysia, 777 Heliconia (the blue one with striking colours), 747-400 Hibiscus (the hibiscus printed 747). Other hot items in the aeroplane world is Singapore Airlines and THAI. One other thing to note is every aeroplane you buy is a LE. It will not be made again, ever. Although you have different brands which may make the same model again then you're in luck. If you'll wait for June, you can start with a Malaysia Airlines 737-800 Oneworld which I heard is being released for this month.

Where do you get them? Online or local distributors?

I checked http://www.geminijets.com/ it seem they do have online store whereas http://www.phoenix-model.net/index.php do not.

Well, in Malaysia, there's

My Hobby House

Dai Kong - He has a website but no online store. You can email him at enquiry@dai-kong.com or phone him at (Zero One Two - Six 574863)

Happy shopping! Alternate places to shop include eBay and oversea retailers. I normally avoid them but some models require that extra mile.
