I think if you look at any European houses/Parisian apartments/Berlin lofts, etc - they have this sort of 'thing' - wall mouldings.

Some fancy restaurants here (Alexis, Ben's KLCC etc?) uses this look very well! Best to go mid-century modern rather than "Datin" though. In the picture, I spot the modernist Isamu Noguchi table and some Eames lounge chairs -- very trite but still quite appropriate.
