Chris Smalling will miss England's November friendlies against Spain and Sweden after the Manchester United defender was ruled out for three weeks on Friday with a cracked bone in his foot.

Smalling, 21, is believed to have suffered the injury in the Champions League tie against Otelul Galati and then aggravated it in the Manchester derby.

Mixed injury news for Reds

Tom Cleverley should be available for the Reds' next Barclays Premier League fixture against Sunderland despite being forced off during the 1-0 win at Everton.

The young midfielder made his league return at Goodison after a foot injury but fans will have feared the worst after he hobbled off on 55 minutes.

However, Sir Alex has declared that Cleverley's problem is not too serious and he was taken off as a precaution.

"He's felt his ankle again," the manager told MUTV. "It's nothing serious, just tightness and tiredness. It's his first real game back, although he played on Tuesday [at Aldershot] of course. He should be okay next week and it was an excellent performance from him in the first half."

The news is less good for defender Chris Smalling, though, as the former Fulham man has a fractured toe and faces a month on the sidelines and Ashley Young, who could be missing for a fortnight.

"Smalling has a small fracture on his foot," added Sir Alex. "I think he'll be out for a month and it's unfortunate that one.

"Ashley Young has a toe injury that is not going away so he could be out for a couple of weeks."

Manchester United youngster Paul Pogba is a January target for both AC Milan and Inter.

The French midfielder, 18, is keen to weight up his options after refusing to sign a new deal at Old Trafford and both Serie A clubs are looking to sign him on a pre-contract, according to The Mirror.

United want to hang onto Pogba, but fear he will be tempted by the money on offer in Italy.

Sir Alex Ferguson had Pogba on the bench for the Champions League clash win over Otelul Galati in midweek, but Italian sources believe his head may be turned by bigger wages and first-team football.

We're missing Cleverley. And us having to chop and change all the time doesn't help as well. But stick Cleverley back there in the middle, we're gonna look pretty again even if it comes a bit here and there only at first.
