Hi guys, I just got a used S2 G version. Thinking of rooting. I've already updated to the latest ICS through Kies. So I am now gonna follow Advanced Method 2. So it's as simple as that right?

Reason I am thinking of rooting is coz my GPS is not locking. So might rooting help?

How do I un-root if I needed to, for warranty claims smile.gif
*
kumusta! hehe

well, once you get rooted you can get a quick gps fix done or flash a custom rom. that might help you out.

to un-root just flash a stock ICS rom back to the phone and thats it. provided you follow advance method 2.

if you have increased your binary flash counter, than you will need a usb jig and the process is slightly more tedious. so best to follow advance method 2 word for word. and things wont go wrong

CWM is not kernel FYI..

it's a modded recovery mode.

CWM is not rooted as well. both are separated. some CWM comes along with root or vice versa..

u can flash a custom ROM without root at all, u just need a recovery mode. although most custom ROM requires root or comes with root.

basically there are three different things here.

ROOT, RECOVERY, ROM

KERNEL is different.

even thou i see u r good at flashing, but it doesn't seem that u understand the difference. Hope this clears your confusion.

this is the heading of the subject

[KERNEL][GT-I9100G][GB+ICS/LP7] ClockworkMod Recovery 5.

and technically he needs to be rooted to have a CWM recovery.

and i was trying to put it in laymans terms for mozzart. thanks anyway for the clarification

No prob bro. glad that problem is solved.

ok now. if you wanna upgrade to ICS, just download the ICS firmware ive posted above and flash the stock firmware using ODIN.

source : Root Access For ICS on I9100G
once that is done, in order to get rooted :

Method 1:

Advantages: Easy to do, permanent ClockworkMod recovery achieved.
Disadvantages: Increases flash counter. (No yellow triangle though.)

Prerequisites: Codeworkx's LP7 or ICS Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1631934
root.zip here: http://www.mediafire.com/?w3zzodjc1b8kqdh
Step 1: Download Codeworkx's LP7/ICS kernel and flash it using Odin.
Step 2: Put root.zip on either the internal or external SD card.
Step 3: Boot into ClockworkMod recovery by pressing Home Button + Volume Up key + Power key while your phone is turned off.
Step 4: Select install zip from sdcard.
Step 5: Select choose zip from sdcard/internal sdcard, depending on where you put root.zip.
Step 6: Flash root.zip and reboot.

Congratulations, you should now have root access.

Method 2:

Advantages: No flash counter increase or yellow triangle.
Disadvantages: Temporary ClockworkMod Recovery. You must have an External SD Card!

Prerequisites: The CWM.zip and root.zip from this file: http://www.mediafire.com/?yh2ii6mbozz9243
Step 1: Put the CWM.zip onto your EXTERNAL SD Card and root.zip on external OR internal SD.
Step 2: Get into the stock recovery mode by pressing Home Button + Volume Up key + Power key while your phone is turned off.
Step 3: From there, select apply update from external storage, and select the CWM.zip.
Step 4: You should now be taken to CWM Touch Recovery, where you should select install zip from sdcard.
Step 5: Select choose zip from sdcard/internal sdcard, depending on where you put root.zip. (Your internal and external sdcard might have their locations switched with the other, so double-check!)
Step 6: Flash root.zip and reboot.

Congratulations, you should now have root access without binary increase or a yellow triangle.
ADVANCED Method 2:

Advantages: No flash counter increase or yellow triangle. Permanent ClockworkMod Recovery.
Disadvantages: More difficult than the other methods, but this will give you the best result once achieved.

Prerequisites: Properly executed all steps from Method 2 and obtained root.
Codeworkx's LP7 or ICS Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1631934

Step 1: Download and install ktool from Google play.
Step 2: Extract the contents of Codeworkx's LP7 or ICS kernel.
Step 3: Find the file "zimage" and copy it onto your phone's storage.
Step 4: Use ktool to flash the "zimage" file. Reboot.

Congratulations, you now have achieved root with permanent ClockworkMod Recovery AND no flash counter increase.

good luck bro

actually i dont understand your issue. ClockWorkMod kernel is required in order to be rooted. only then you can flash CM9. without a rooted kernel you cnat flash cm9

The phone doesn't contains cwm so there is no way I can access recovery. The owner fail root his phone thus stuck at this stage
*
bro the phone is not able to boot right? but its force closing at the setup page.

switch phone off. hold volume up + home + power button. this will bring you to STOCK recovery. not CWM.

from there choose wipe data factory reset. then boot up adn see if it works.

im not sure bro. what you have done.

so you re-did all the steps and completed the advance method 2?

if yes, then yeah you can read the CM9 thread and flash BUT please becareful. if you made such a mistake of flashing wrong files, your phone might possibly be a brick. please read extra extra carefully

ok im not a pro in explaining technical terms cause i myself am also learning.

but from what i think i understand.

code said that because, his CM9 already has its own kernel. so you dont need to flash this on cm9.

from there, you just download ICS 5.5.0.4. flash using odin. then follow all the steps.

we normallflash this kernel when we are on stock rom, to get root access and CWM. from there we will start flashing cm9

1 . CWM is not a kernel, it's just a recovery mode.

2. codeworkx mentioned don't flash this on CM9, bcz CM9 is running a different kernel and will not work with this. U need to flash this BEFORE flashing CM9, so that CM9 will overwrite the existing kernels.

3.Fundamentals of flashing a new ROM requires ONLY CWM. Root or no root doesn't matter, cz the ROM itself will be pre-rooted if it requires root for it's custom apps. Kernels also separate one. Custom ROMs can work with stock kernels, unless they require special tweaking, then they will include their own kernels within the ROM .zip file.
u r confused with the kernels and recovery, that's y u can't really understand his situation.

1. i understood all along.

2 & 3. helped clear out some of the parts i was confused about. thanks bro for clearing things up for me. AGAIN biggrin.gif

well you are either on gingerbread or ics rom. either way you will need to familiarize yourself with kernels and roms.

Galaxy S II I9100G

that section has everything you need to know. all the available kernels, stock roms, custom roms, themes etc.

you should be rooted bro. which method did you use?

QUOTE(ming24 @ Aug 1 2012, 07:51 PM)
okay. I read a few threads about the Q&A on rooting. But what exactly is ClockworkMod Recovery?
*
since you are rooted alr. im sure you know what this is. but ill justs hare, its a custom recovery, used to flash custom roms, zip files, modems etc.

QUOTE(neuromancerx @ Aug 2 2012, 12:20 AM)
Does flashing our radio modem have any effect on the cellular reception?
*
from what i know, it helps with data connection. like the transfer speeds, or when the network changes from H+ to 3g and such. i dont know if it can affect reception signal cause i think that is based on the hardware and location. when i flashed modems, i always check the signal db and i didnt see any changes. when i was at the exact same location after flashing

im still on Stock, 4.0.3... dint do any mod on the device so far.

okay. so for cm9 right im not sure la, cause when i was using it, the camera had some major issues, like pink spots, and camera out of focus, etc. some ppl didnt face this prob, and some ppl said use a third party app solved it. but for me i like the stock one, and wasnt happy with that. other than that, the CM( is superb. is damn smooth fast and seriously damn good rom.

i then used divine ROM. and this is good for me. still fast adns mooth, camera works fine and overall really good for me. IMHO this is my favourite.

just follow the tutorials/links i posted from the XDA thread. and you will be fine. follow the rooting guide. then look for divine rom thread and follow the instructions

Guys, how do I set my phone internet browser to always display in landscape? Back on GB,there was an option in the settings that made it possible. But now on ICS,there's no such option. Im using stock ROM and browser, fyi. Thanks! Also,i disabled auto orientation because i don't need it.
*
im not too sure. i have always used auto rotation for this. later ill try playing with my phone and see if there is anything
