The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as Euro 2012, will be the 14th European Championship for national football teams sanctioned by UEFA. The final tournament will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine between 8 June and 1 July 2012. This bid was chosen by UEFA's Executive Committee in 2007.

This will be the last European Championship finals tournament to contain 16 nations; 24 will compete from Euro 2016 onward. Qualification was contested by 51 nations between August 2010 and November 2011 to join the two host nations in the tournament.

The winner of the tournament will earn the right to compete for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Brazil.

So, as it happened, here is the complete group drool.gif

Seeing two potential teams next year, Spain & Netherlands to run riot. If giants like Germany, Italy could play well and compete , they could go far.

England could be well on course for a 2nd round, can't see them going further than 2nd stage.

im hoping to see Bosnia team playing in Euro 2012. If not for the bias refereeing they could've won in France & finish top of the group.

Also minnows like Montenegro got some big names on their team like Mirko Vucinic, Stevan Jovetic, Simon Vukcevic & Stefan Savic to name a few..

Both Montenegro & Bosnia replacing Czech Rep @ Croatia in the tournament sounds like new breeze of air to me..

Estonia & Montenegro are the surprise team in play-off, managed to qualify ahead the like of Swiss & Serbia. I think Montenegro can go through to finals.

Few possibilities:
1. He's not even selected in 23-man squad. Good news for Utd, he can be fresh for next season brows.gif .
2. He's selected but England crash in group stage, due to no firepower upfront. People blame him for this incident cry.gif .
3. Selected and England through to 2nd round, he can get ready and still fresh to lead rclxms.gif .

the point 2 if really happen will show how poor england is ... totally 1 man show laugh.gif

anyway if england to go to next round, fabio sure will retain his main strikers unless the goals are coming from midfielders

means rooney only can come on as substitute

i hope england don't become like last time, whether shearer good or bad form also can play

What will Capello do? Recalled Crouch, Defoe, Heskey? Or rely on youngters like Welbeck, Wickham? Or even Bent, Agbonlahor who still not tested on bigger tournament.
Whatever it is, I'm sure Rooney is their best attacker by far. But he seems fail to deliver in tournament apart from EURO2004 I think.

Čech concern for Czech Republic

Czech Republic coach Michal Bílek, already without suspended Tomáš Hübschman, could be missing Petr Čech for the play-off with Montenegro after the keeper broke his nose. Czech Republic coach Michal Bílek, already without suspended midfielder Tomáš Hübschman, could be missing goalkeeper Petr Čech for their UEFA EURO 2012 play-off with Montenegro.

Hübschman is serving the last two games of a three-match ban as the Czech Republic welcome Montenegro to Prague on Friday before the return leg in Podgorica four days later. And now Čech is a doubt after breaking his nose in Chelsea FC's win against Blackburn Rovers FC on Saturday.

"A broken nose is a painful injury, particularly for a goalkeeper who can be the target of challenges from tall strikers," said Bílek. "He will have a special mask from Italy and how he feels will be crucial for my decision about who starts in goal. I hope he will be ready, his presence on the pitch is very important for us because he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world."

Čech will join the squad on Wednesday yet his participation is unsure – although he could wear a mask in addition to his usual headgear. Jaroslav Drobný of Hamburger SV, who started the 2-2 draw with Scotland in September, could fill in.

Czech Republic squad
Goalkeepers: Petr Čech (Chelsea FC), Jaroslav Drobný (Hamburger SV), Jan Laštůvka (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk).

Defenders: Zdeněk Pospěch (1. FSV Mainz 05), Jan Rajnoch (MKE Ankaragücü), Tomáš Sivok (Beşiktaş JK), Theodor Gebreselassie (FC Slovan Liberec), Roman Hubník (HSC Hertha Berlin)*, Daniel Pudil (KRC Genk), Michal Kadlec (Bayer 04 Leverkusen).

Midfielders: Tomáš Rosický (Arsenal FC), Daniel Kolář (FC Viktoria Plzeň), Jaroslav Plašil (FC Girondins de Bordeaux), Václav Pilař (FC Viktoria Plzeň), Milan Petržela (FC Viktoria Plzeň), Marek Matějovský (AC Sparta Praha), Petr Jiráček (FC Viktoria Plzeň).

Forwards: Milan Baroš (Galatasaray AŞ), David Lafata (FK Jablonec), Tomáš Pekhart (1. FC Nürnberg), Jan Rezek (Anorthosis Famagusta FC).

*Suspended for first leg

Countdown continues with a feast of friendlies

With qualification for UEFA EURO 2012 already assured, several nations continue their preparations for next summer's final tournament in a raft of friendly matches this weekend. Amid a backdrop of UEFA EURO 2012 play-off ties, several qualified nations continue their preparations for next summer's final tournament with testing friendly matches this weekend.

World and European champions Spain travel to Wembley Stadium on Saturday to take on England in the pick of the games. Vicente del Bosque's side will be buoyed by a perfect qualifying campaign and an excellent recent record against their opponents. Spain's only defeat by England since 1987 was elimination from EURO '96 in a penalty shoot-out, while Del Bosque's charges ran out 2-0 winners when the teams last met in 2009 in Seville.

Fabio Capello has left out Wayne Rooney, who is suspended for the opening three matches of the final tournament, as he considers his options up front without the Manchester United FC forward. Spain, meanwhile, have a wealth of attackers at their disposal with David Villa, David Silva and Juan Mata all in fine form for their clubs.

On Friday there is a Scandinavian derby as Sweden, who qualified automatically as the best runners-up, visit Copenhagen to face Morten Olsen's Denmark. The Swedes were the third highest scorers in qualifying and will be looking to end a run of three games without a goal against their neighbours.

On the same day UEFA EURO 2012 co-hosts Poland play their first match in the recently opened Municipal Stadium Wroclaw against Italy. The stadium was inaugurated on 29 October in front of a sell-out crowd that watched WKS Śląsk Wroclaw beat KS Lechia Gdańsk; the venue will stage three group games next summer. Fellow co-hosts Ukraine welcome Germany to Kyiv with Joachim Löw's side aiming to continue the impressive form that produced ten wins out of ten on their way to topping UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group A.

The only other match featuring two teams that have stamped their finals ticket sees Greece go head-to-head with Russia in Piraeus. Also on Friday the Netherlands tackle Switzerland for only the fourth time in just over 30 years and France, having pipped Bosnia and Herzegovina to first place in Group D, entertain the United States.

Ireland and Croatia close in on Euros

Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane claimed a double as Giovanni Trapattoni's side took a stranglehold on their play-off with a 4-0 win against nine-man Estonia.

Keith Andrews had got the visitors off to the perfect start with a 13th-minute header and Jonathan Walters repeated the feat from Keane's 67th-minute cross.

Keane made it 3-0 four minutes later and then converted a late penalty as Estonia, who had Andrei Stepanov sent off before the break and captain Raio Piiroja after it, capitulated on a miserable night for the hosts in Tallinn.

Croatia all but guaranteed themselves a place at Euro 2012 after hammering hosts Turkey 3-0 in the first leg of their play-off.

Ivica Olic gave Slaven Bilic's side the perfect start when he turned home Vedran Corluka's cross from close range with just two minutes on the clock.

Mario Mandzukic doubled the lead half an hour later when he nodded past the flailing Volkan Demirel at the far post, before Corluka completed the scoring in the 51st minute with only his second international goal.

A late header from Tomas Sivok saw the Czech Republic put one foot in the finals with a 2-0 victory over Montenegro.

The Czechs held a narrow lead after Vaclav Pilar's 63rd-minute goal but Sivok's goal in injury time gives them a clear advantage going into the second leg in Montenegro.

Bosnia-Herzegovina failed to make the most of home advantage as they played out a dire goalless draw with Portugal in Zenica.

Possession was dominated by the visitors but Helder Postiga missed the best of what chances they created, while Cristiano Ronaldo again struggled to recreate his club form in a Portugal shirt.

Despite that, Portugal will feel they are best placed to qualify ahead of the second leg in Lisbon on Tuesday night.

Ireland eased to the European Championships for the first time since 1988 by beating Estonia 5-1 on aggregate, after a 1-1 draw in Dublin. Ireland full-back Stephen Ward increased his side's 4-0 aggregate lead in the play-off tie with a close-range 31st-minute finish.

But Estonia skipper Konstantin Vassiljev denied the Republic of Ireland victory on the night. The midfielder blasted home a 30-yard drive which eluded Shay Given to hand the visitors a 57th-minute equaliser at the Aviva Stadium.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Helder Postiga both scored twice as Portugal reached the finals with a 6-2 win over Bosnia but the scoreline did little justice to the drama at Lisbon's Stadium Of Light.

The visitors, who had held on for a gallant goalless draw in the first leg in Bosnia, twice narrowed the deficit to a single goal despite being hampered by the 54th minute sending-off of Senad Lucic.

A thunderous eighth minute free-kick from Ronaldo and an even more powerful long-range drive from Nani on 24 minutes appeared to have settled home nerves and sent the favourites through.

But Zvjezdan Misimovic ensured the outcome of the game still hung by a thread at half-time after he converted a 41st minute penalty awarded after Fabio Coentrao was ruled to have handled in the box.

Portugal regained the initiative through Ronaldo on 53 and when Lulic was shown a straight red immediately afterwards for arguing with the referee, it appeared the Bosnian challenge was finally over. But the visitors reduced the deficit again on 65 through Emir Spahic before the 10 men tired, with two late Postiga strikes and a free-kick from Miguel Veloso giving a lopsided look to the scoreline.

Croatia also cruised into next year's finals after playing out a 0-0 draw against Turkey in Zagreb four days after their decisive 3-0 first-leg win in Istanbul.

Ivica Olic, Mario Mandzukic and Vedran Corluka had all scored to make tonight's game a virtual formality, although Croatia boss Slaven Bilic insisted his side's job remained only half done.

Despite a brave Turkish bid for an away win the Croatians held firm and qualification for their third consecutive continental finals - and revenge for their Euro 2008 quarter-final loss to the Turks - was secured.

Czech Republic ensured their place after a narrow 1-0 win proved to be enough against Montenegro.

Petr Jiracek scored the only goal of the game in the 81st minute to give them a 3-0 win on aggregate.

The Czechs won the first leg 2-0 in Prague on Friday with goals from Vaclav Pilar and Tomas Sivok which meant the slender win sealed their progression to Euro 2012.

Capello: Euros tougher than WC

Ahead of the Euro 2012 draw on Friday, England manager Fabio Capello has suggested the competition represents a tougher test than the 2010 World Cup.

Spain, Netherlands and Germany look to be the favourites for next summer's tournament in Poland and Ukraine, and the worst-case scenario for Capello would see England drawn in a group alongside Spain, Portugal and France.

Having struggled through a group containing United States, Algeria and Slovenia in the World Cup last year, Capello is wary of the greater concentration of quality on offer at Euro 2012.

"This time it will be stronger," he said. "It will be stronger because if you look at the groups and all the teams, particularly the three European teams who reached the World Cup semi-finals, the technical level is at the top, the organisation of the teams is at the top.

"Also some teams who didn't play well at the World Cup will now be back at the top. Portugal, France and Italy will be better. It will be a really tough tournament.''

Asked which teams he would like to avoid in the group stages, Capello said: "Spain and Holland. After that there is also Portugal and France. These are the teams I would prefer to avoid in the group stage.''

England could face Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland, but that prospect has little appeal for Capello either.

"I hope not,'' Capello said. "The countries are close and also it would be two Italian managers, so I prefer not to be drawn with them. We cannot draw Italy as we are in the same pot, but this would be the same for me to face another Italian manager.''

While Capello knows it will be difficult for him to end his England reign on a high, he has no intention of extending his stay until the 2014 World Cup.

The FA's director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking had indicated that he could remain in the post beyond the end of his contract, but Capello - now 65 - says otherwise. "As an England manager, this is it for me,'' he said.

not really. History showing dat the Holland always screwed up against Portugal. While Germany being Germany..they can beat
almost any team in the world.

I think the top 3 favourites are

1)Spain - Obviously they have the strongest squad among all. But it's rare to see a team win 3 tournaments continuously.
2)German - They did really well in WC 2010. Very solid squad as well. With the likes of Mario Gomez, Thomas Muller, Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Khedira. Defensively they have very good and experienced players as well such as Lahm, Matt Hummels, Per Mertesacker.
3)Netherlands- Offensively they r one of the best team around. Watch out at players like Van persie, robben, Sneijder, Van der vaart, Huntelaar. But most of them are injury prone tongue.gif. Defensively, I think they still have much to improve.

Teams that I thought would shock others.

1)Portugal- Portugal has been dissapointing even since Figo was around, but I think this is a huge chance for CR to perform. Others stars like Pepe, Bruno Alves, Nani, Meireless, Moutinho would like to achieve sth as well.
2)France - If Blanc is able to blend things really well. France is actually a star-studded team with huge talents. Look at their defence - Sagna, Evra, Adil Rami, Mexes, Clichy, Koscielny. There's also Ribery, Nasri, Benzema, Valbuena, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Giroud, Lassana Diarra. Hopefully this team will go far.
3)Croatia- The most underrated team to me. They've got tough group games to play against Spain, Italy and Ireland. Steven Bilic's considered of of the long serving managers for a national football team. Team consist of Modric, Rakitic, Olic, Kranjcar, Srna. I expect Croatia to give Italy a huge challenge to qualify to the knockout stage aqround

Team that will be a huge dissapointment?

England - Can the caretaker pearce make a difference? Team will talents as well but i still think they are over-hyped. Sorry, no offense to fans of three lions but i think england may even have a problem qualifying into the knockout stage. France, Sweden could do better.
Italy - Sorry to italy fans out there. Ever since the WC 2006(after this tourney) I can see italy national team and italian clubs in serie a going backwards. I personally think the national team will be missing senior players like Andrea Pirlo, Cannavaro, Nesta, Gattuso and Totti.

England survival will really depend on thw
heroics of joe hart. If he's injured england is in deep trouble.

Italy no longer play defensively anymore. Dont think its wise given the quality of their current backline

my thoughts says otherwise

when Italy won the world cup in 2006. Juventus is one of the strongest team in Serie A. After Juve were demoted...Italy downfall happen in euro08 & wc2010

i might sounds like an old record but the strong juventus team makes a strong italy team (like the WC 1982 & WC 2006). Not that meant other italian clubs
not contributed to national teams success but juve has traditionally been italy national team backbone

and out of those senior/veteran player u mention..only Pirlo are still playing with the Azzurri and he's one of the key player of the team.

hehe ... for me, tiki-taka will lose to 4-2-3-1 formation, which suits german style of play (2 defensive midfilder with counter attack from both flanks) ..

so my prediction would be:

::QUARTER FINAL::
(25) 1A(poland) vs 2B(germany) -- GER won
(26) 1B(holland) vs 2A(czech) -- HOL won
(27) 1C(spain) vs 2D(france) -- SPA won
(28) 1D(sweden) vs 2C (italy) -- ITA won

::SEMI-FINAL::
(29) 25(germany) vs 27(spain) -- GER won (tiki-taka will lose..)
(30) 26(holland) vs 28(italy) -- ITA won

::FINAL::
GER(1) vs ITA(1) - ITA won penalty thumbup.gif

hehehe .. forza italia!

p/s: sorry to england fans as england wud sukc without rooney ...they will not go thru biggrin.gif

but that is just my prediction .. whats urs? biggrin.gif

That's a very straight prediction and the most obvious but I guess these teams will mesh up the obvious...

Group A - Greece

solid at the back, maybe they can qualify with one win and a draw

Group B - Denmark

qualifying group champion, have beaten Oranje b4 and nobody give a d*** about them at all

Group C - Ireland

no pressure at all, very good team spirit, they believe they can defeat anyone, Trap knows Italy very well

Group D - Sweden/Ukraine

If one of them can get one good result against the famous 2...

Aku rasa sangat sedih, Turkey x qualify for this Euro. Almost.....WC 02 dapat no 3, euro 08 layak ke semi, tetapi peningkatan macam volatile jugak, hmmm......

Harap2 croatia yg kalahkan turkey kat play off dapat pergi jauh...

I'm rooting for France. You can see the whole squad is in high spirit and harmony during friendlies. Respect each other, no more rebel this time. All is forgiven. Even Mexes their most experienced defender also doesn't sulking when he isn't on the team sheet. Superstar like Menez, Giroud, Ribery, Nasri, Benzema also not selfish and mixing well with other player.

I guess you're right. I got sneaky feeling the French will make it to Semi Final for this Euro. Totally different squad spirit from previous WC.

The squad seems to be weaker without Puyol and Villa.

Hopefully Torres able to regain his form on time. smile.gif

I think the era of glory for Germany has finally come. I'm rooting for Germany to win this time around...

Spain had had their glory and usually it is all going down after a cycle of Euro and World Cup...

So now it is Germany's turn..

Defender fault. Left GK alone inside the box with opposition player. Easy to get sent off in that situation when nobody do you favour.

like you say all shot gone wide,,, meaning no target.
Polska saved the penalty boss, you not consider that lucky....... ???????
If Greece score the penalty, Greece could win the game you know.......
Polska played more than 1 man also couldn't control the game, technically they are not really strong....

Group A: I predict Russia and Czech will make the cut.... I like Poland but they technically not very strong...

Baros.. this guy is awful, lack of awareness and movement around him, poor off the ball movement. Hard to feed a lazy striker like this. Carlton Cole, Emile Heskey far better than him. Not to mention his expire date already past 8 years ago. It looks like Czech playing without a striker.

Del Bosque satisfied with Italy draw

QUOTE
Vicente del Bosque said his Spain side had chances to win a "quite balanced" opening game against Italy but, like Cesare Prandelli, sounded satisfied with the 1-1 draw. Having witnessed their respective sides put in immense performances in a captivating Group C opening encounter at the Arena Gdansk, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli and his Spain counterpart Vicente del Bosque each declared himself satisfied with a point.

Vicente del Bosque, Spain coach
Of course we wanted to win here but I am not leaving feeling frustrated as I thought we put in a good performance; we will leave happy knowing that. We finished the game full of eagerness, determination and with chances to win. I thought the second half was in our favour. We know how this type of game is, though, and this one was quite balanced. "We were solid in possession against a team who looked to press us and who started the game determined to stand up to us. Italy had some good chances, that's true, but we were on top of our game." We have achieved a point while putting on a good display.

Cesc Fàbregas is a player who is great at arriving in the area and we tried to use him from the start in a way we thought best for this occasion. Fernando Torres came on later and had chances to score which he didn't take but I am happy with a draw.

Cesare Prandelli, Italy coach
It was a very intense game. We really tried hard to press the Spanish players from the moment they started their moves. We tried to avoid them getting one-on-one situations while when we had the ball we looked to build from the back. Yesterday I didn't know what we would be coming up against in this game but I was smiling because this is a fantastic sport which I think we sometimes need to approach with less tension.

I brought Antonio Di Natale on for Mario Balotelli not because Mario missed a chance but because I felt we needed more depth in our attacks. "What disappointed me about this evening was that we allowed them to equalise so quickly. We were playing the world champions but we should have made it more difficult for them after we scored." We need to improve on certain things. We were a little surprised with Spain's lineup but we agreed that we needed to focus on our own game. We will analyse this game and work on some things. We expended a lot of energy which we will need to recover for our next match.

France not fooled by talk of England frailty

QUOTE
France coach Laurent Blanc expects a real test from an England side that "always wants to win and even more so against us" in the Group D opener against their injury-hit rivals. Laurent Blanc is not buying it for a second. As if he did not have enough on his plate already, the France coach found himself in the unusual position of trying to raise English morale on Sunday, reassuring England's more sceptical followers that their team will pose Les Bleus real problems in their Group D opener.

It is rare that an England squad travels to a major tournament with expectation levels low back at home, but a growing mood of fatalism has clearly taken hold. Without a manager for nearly three months until Roy Hodgson's appointment on 1 May, England have lost Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry, Gary Cahill and John Ruddy to injury since announcing their squad – and all that after learning star striker Wayne Rooney would miss their first two matches through suspension.

If the plan has been to lull France into a false sense of security, though, it has not worked. "We've had our own problems too," Blanc explained. ""Don't worry, the English will show up ready for us. They always want to win and even more so against the French." We have to forget everything that's happened before."

The list of past events in that particular category includes the last meeting between the two teams at this level, when a pair of Zinédine Zidane goals in added time gave France a remarkable 2-1 victory in their first outing at UEFA EURO 2004. England have not got the better of their old rivals since 1997 and their last competitive success dates back 30 years, but Blanc expects Hodgson's side to be doughty opponents.

"England are very strong in the tackle and very committed," he said. "I saw their two warm-up games [against Norway and Belgium] and if they play the same way, they'll play very deep, with two banks of four and looking to counter. We'll have to make sure not to leave too much space and get caught out, because Steven Gerrard is a very good passer."

Having hinted that injury doubts Yann M'Vila (ankle) and Blaise Matuidi (thigh) will start on the bench, the former defender – whose last experience of a UEFA European Championship was lifting the trophy 12 years ago – also denied that his team were favourites in a group featuring Sweden and co-hosts Ukraine too. What is certain, though, is that England are wary of the threat they pose going forward. "It's obvious that in attacking areas they have a lot of quality players who can win matches off their own back," said Hodgson.

The 64-year-old nonetheless has plenty of faith in his own charges, whom he credited with "[making] it easy for me to get my feet under the table" since taking charge. ""We have a team of players that are major stars in the Premier League, which is widely regarded as a top league and I see them play to the best of their ability every week. I hope they can replicate that form when we get on the field for France" and the matches that follow," he said. Despite his words of encouragement, Blanc probably does not hope likewise.

It will be lots drawing aka Lucky Draw...

It has happened before, if not wrong between Portugal and Netherlands... Portugal proceeded in the end.

I think will have extra time for the last game if all 4 teams draw on points... that is why the last game will be play same time for each group

Uefa Ranking coefficients will be used, so lucky draw will never ever happen.

I think it would go to either the fair play rules (accumulative amount of cards) or the official UEFA ranking of teams...the lucky draw should be the last resort...Check this source

Agreed! The last round of matches for that group will be interesting.

Kinda sad to come to think the Dutch may be eliminated so early.

But then they had their chances against Portugal and Germany respectively.

Can I know lets say Portugal beaten by Netherlands 2-0 at the last match, Denmark is beaten by Germany.

That makes Netherlands and Portugal's points, GF, GA exactly the same... then which side will move to the next round? Alphabetical order?

Tie Breaking Procedure

1. If two or more nations are level on points in the group the country with the highest number points in games involving those teams finishes highest.
2. If nations are still level they are separated by goal difference, and then goals scored, in games involving the teams.
3. If teams still cannot be split, then overall goal group difference is used.

well. u can. provide the firepower hit bulls eye every single time. in case of holland. the whole team play at an average level. attacking third also not so efficient.

weak defense and lack of teamwork at attacking third were key factors imo. such a pity if Sneijder - arguably midfielder with greatest performances in Euro 2012 so far *imo* - can't perform further after group stage.

What for to have huge firepower without accuracy? Even RvP's goal was largely credited to his individual performance. A big tragedy to see world cup runner-up got knocked out in such a humiliating fashion.

In simple terms, it just means which team got more points from their match together

meaning = head to head.... if head to head draw... then only they look at goal difference

holland will only go through if they beat portugal by two goals
but if they beat portugal by 1 goal and denmark lose to germany
portugal the one who going through because they beat denmark based on goals scored

holland need to score 2 no matter what if want to qualify

Will Italy be knock out of the tournament even though it WINS the next match against Ireland?

Yes if Spain and Croatia DRAW 2-2 (or more) then Italy are out.

Will the FIX be in?
Well bookies slashed odds on a 2-2 result from 18:1 to 5:2. Thats very significant!

Will not happen?

At 2004 Euros it happened. the Scandinavian teams (Denmark & Sweden) 'conspired' to knock out Italy with a 2-2 draw. nod.gif

its just like in serie A, ifmore than two teams tied for a placw. There is like a mini-table with all those teams involved and their points against each other. The team that has the most points against the other two or more teams goes through in that mini table.

ya german still can get knock out if denmark and portugal win last matches, the head to head will cancel each other and GD will count the most

it means german will play 1st team

if this scenario happen then it will create the history for a team that get 6 points but fail to qualify ...

No wonder he's so knowledgeable. He's Viv Anderson, former professional who played at top level.

Added on June 18, 2012, 4:17 amThat's why you need at least one ball playing CB to build attack from the back. Dutch can't even get from their own half, because their CBs are not technically good with the ball. Always have to resort to Sketelenburg to hoof it upfront. But can't really blame the coach. Dutch league haven't produced a top class ball playing CB in ages since the day Philip Cocu and De Boer brothers retired.

yup. total football need ball playing CB but the CBs that the Dutch team have now are all robust type of CB. it's useless. well, even with my FM knowledge, i can't name any Dutch CB other than those in the team.

Was the Dutch lacking a ball playing CB?

Sorry to say the key 'position' was filled by a holding midfielder who contribute neither to offense or to defense productively.

The passenger is - City's Nigel de Jong. Yes he takes the ball from the defense and PLAYS the ball or pass usually sideways. Most of the time he doesn't create any goal scoring opportunities. But his passing & completion stats are
impressive.
What about defense? Of course he doesn't have the height to challenge or head the ball away from danger. What about defending in front of the box? Not impressive and sometimes shocking IMO.

To wit Nigel 'shying away' from PJP split pass to R7 to score. If you watch again you will see his teammate gave him a telling off. NDJ was playing like a CB then not covering anybody.

VDV should have started instead of NDJ in all the matches.

That was the mistake Marwijk made in not having an alternate midifleder who can contribute to goals given that Robben, RVP, Sneijder have been firing mostly blanks.

"Watched Meireles being 'winded' by NDJ left hand. That's a blow not RM faking it."

Telling it like it is. An honest opinion.

Surprised that Netherlands didn't press for the ball, just like in the previous matches. Kuyt can be useful instead of van Persie.

The Dutch system is outmoded playing with a holding midfielder which was exposed by being out flanked in the form of Nani & R7.

NDJ is not the type of midfielder who (when pressed up high to join the Dutch attack) has the ability to hold the ball (i.e. ball control), dribbling or have the sublime skills (with splitting passes etc.) to create goal opportunities for his teammates.

Today he was found wanting especially when the Dutch lost the ball to allow the Portuguese to counterattack productively. NDJ does not have the PACE!

The Dutch needed to have an offensive team and should have VDV (instead of NDJ) in the lineup from the get go.

That was Marjiwk fatal flaw.

Dutch playing with two same CM all the time. I'm ok with de jong, but van bommel? No other CM? I know he's a great leader...but performance wise hmm...

The two full backs(Van der wiel and Jetro Willems) offensively they are quite good, but defensively i feel they are not good enough. should have fielded khalid boularouz maybe?

Dutch is missing the old robben(bombarding the left flank). His current play style very predictable(right flank trying to cut into middle and shoot). With strikers like RVP and huntelaar, would have been great if he played on the left and make crosses(I know at bayern he's been playing right wing all the time).

Wesley Sneijder seems to lost his touch too. He's trying to produce his magic passes but unfortunately, they didnt go well.

Me too.
But the Dutch team was all hype before the tournament start but alas, it's a flop.
Anyway, they are in the Group of Death, right, with Germany and Portugal.

Ronaldo show sends out Czechs

QUOTE
Cristiano Ronaldo fired Portugal into the semi-finals of Euro 2012 after his diving header disposed of Czech Republic 1-0 in Warsaw. The Real Madrid forward had twice hit the woodwork and seen his side have a goal chalked out for offside before he arrived on cue in the six-yard box to nod in Joao Moutinho's cross on 79 minutes.

The Czechs - with captain Tomas Rosicky, the Arsenal midfielder, only on the bench because of an Achilles injury - had started brightly, but lacked a decisive move in the final third.

It had been a decent opening from Michal Bilek's side as Petr Jiracek drilled the ball in from 20 yards, but his effort was blocked by Real Madrid defender Pepe.

Portugal coach Paulo Bento named an unchanged side having beaten Netherlands to qualify behind Germany out of the 'Group of Death' for the last eight.

Manchester United winger Nani and Madrid star Ronaldo, who would miss the semi-final if he picked up another caution, were the most lively for the Portuguese.

On 17 minutes, the Czech Republic, who overcame a 4-1 defeat in their opening game against Russia to win Group A, broke quickly down the right and Vladimir Darida whipped over a low cross through the six-yard box, which Galatasaray striker Milan Baros just failed to connect with.

Ronaldo was played into the Czech box, holding off Michal Kadlec, and drilled the ball goalwards with Chelsea keeper Petr Cech making a smart save. However, English referee Howard Webb had blown for a foul by the Portugal forward, who could not believe the decision against him.

On 26 minutes, Nani went into the Yorkshireman's notebook after tripping David Limbersky. The game was starting to open up as Czech full-back Theodor Gebre Selassie cut in from the right and crossed, with Pepe again alert to clear the danger.

At the other end, Ronaldo - who netted a brace against the Dutch - went close with an overhead kick at the far post. The former Manchester United forward was then just off target again with an ambitious long-range free-kick.

Portugal were forced into a change six minutes before half-time when striker Helder Postiga pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring problem, and was replaced by 6ft 3in Besiktas frontman Hugo Almeida.

Nani claimed for a penalty after going down in the box under close attention from Limbersky, but the referee was unconvinced, with TV replays showing the United forward slipped rather than was pushed.

Portugal continued to press and Ronaldo was within inches of a spectacular opening goal when he collected a high ball into the box on his chest, swivelled around marker Kadlec and crashed the ball past Cech - only for it to strike the base of the near post.

There was another great chance for Portugal at the start of the second half, when Almeida headed over from 12 yards after being picked out by Raul Meireles' cross.

On 50 minutes, Ronaldo was denied by the woodwork again as this time his 30-yard free-kick clipped the outside of the far post with Cech beaten.

The Chelsea keeper then had to parry away a 25-yard strike from Nani, and only an offside flag prevented Portugal taking a deserved lead on 57 minutes when Almeida glanced in the United winger's cross.

The Czechs produced a counter-attack when Vaclav Pilar charged down the left and into the penalty area, only to produce a poor final pass, which was hacked clear. Portugal were soon back on the offensive as Moutinho's dipping 25-yard effort was tipped over.

Kadlec was then left in a heap after being clattered by goalkeeper Cech, who punched clear at the edge of the penalty area. The Chelsea man's goal was leading a charmed life, as Nani's floated ball was deflected behind.

Ronaldo finally broke the deadlock on 79 minutes, when he sent a diving header past Cech from Moutinho's right-wing cross. Portugal continued to pour forwards, with Cech beating away an angled 25-yard effort from full-back Joao Pereira.

Ronaldo went down under a challenge from Gebre Selassie and, although he appeared to be caught by the Czech defender, referee Webb again waved play on.

Portugal saw out four minutes of stoppage time to secure their place in the semi-finals, where they will face either Spain or France.

First goal was fault by M'vila or maybe Malouda. Very lazy to track Xabi Alonso run deep from the centre half. 2nd goal, nothing can be done. Regardless of clumsy challenge by Anthony Revelliere, Pedro was anticipated that and he's always going down in that tussle.

I'd say it was Clichy's. Couldn't understand Blanc's decision to take M'Vila out for Giroud when they really need to control possession, since that substitution France clearly didn't create any chance and losing the grip. Well after all Portugal vs Spain is more interesting than France vs Portugal imo, can't wait for that match.

Clichy?
If you watch it again find out what was M'Villa (defensive holding midfielder) & Malouda doing (jalan jalan?) to cover Alonso ( a late arrival).
Lax defending by midfielders (M'villa & Malouda), poor heads up, to allow a top defensive holding midfielder to bypass them. Clichy's was rightfully covering Fabergas.

And they castigate (rightfully) Nasri for poor defending against Russia. doh.gif

Usual suspects doh.gif

It was a great split pass by Iniesta to allow Alba to 'outplay' Debuchy.
Debuchy is a poor RB. Given that Debuchy had a headstart on Alba. Play the man (blocked or bumped Alba from cutting in)! To left sprawling* on the turf shows that Debuchy is really not good enough.
There are tricks or tools that a defender can do legitimately to ward or block a wingback from cutting in even if one does not have pace or size.

Debuchy!

P.S As a last resort you can always bump or shoulder him to affect his kick/cross/strike. Never act like a 'kiasu' going down sprawling.

The turning point of the match for Germany against Greece was Lahm's goal.

Lahm's beautiful strike was assisted by the referee.

Idk if you watched it carefully or not, Fabregas was already covered by Koscielny, Clichy was neglecting his side - unnecessarily dragged inside standing in the same spot with Koscielny, let Alonso came free from not-so-wide position. Doesn't mean I say M'Vila didn't have any mistake for that goal but it was more of Clichy's imo.

and when was it France play against Russia?

From my point of view, when somebody who's originally placed very deep and managed to penetrate through the middle with so much space and scored, that must have to do with laziness and incompetent midfielder when defending. This is part of Spain plan, Fabregas supposed to be Clichy man because he was positioned at the far right, instead he cut through the middle and let Xabi Alonso come forward to head the ball. Clichy probably unaware of Xabi run, can't blame him when France should defending as a team, not just left the defenders do all the defensive work. The way Malouda just stand still did nothing was unforgivable. While Spain, their player all work hard in off the ball situation and their nearest player close down their opponent as quickly as they can.

wasn't Fabregas deployed as false 9 in the center and not positioned at the far right? during the build-up and Xabi's header he sticked to the central position, and if it's talking about Clichy's man, i guess it would be to be Silva who was rather moving to the left side of Spain's attacking side. I'm not saying Malouda M'Vila are free from mistake, but unawareness of Clichy to the area around him was costly mistake and Spanish players in the box were outnumbered by French at that moment cmiiw. imo.

Portugal-Spain, Germany-Italy, I'd go for Portugal and Germany. At least if it won't be the case, I'm expecting an interesting match to watch. Both of Portugal and Germany have 2 days of rest more than their opponents, might be benefited from that also, especially Germany, since Italy was exhausted playing 120 minutes.

Usually if a defender was replaced (in the 64th min together with Malouda, and M'Villa in the 79th. min) its because he is poor or incompetent which the 'kiasu' Debuchy was.

His 'sprawling' gave Alba TIME & space to either cross

a. across the goalmouth for Fab (sandwiched correctly by Clichy & the other CB) or
b. for Alonso a late arrival from the centre field.

Malouda was vilified the most by his critics or football pundits.
As a holding & defensive midfielder to cover for the back 4 , M'Villa should also equally share the criticism.

If you have the opportunity review the sequence from Iniesta split pass.

The usual suspect to blame in this typical case for Alonso coming in on the right flank is either the LB (Clichy) or if he is preoccupied (defending Fab) then the LEFT Midfield (Malouda).

Thats why Milner went beyond his role (as a right midfielder) in covering for England CBs when he prevented a Balotelli chip in when Mario broke the offside trap (slip streamed by a slow poke Terry). nod.gif

Thats why Milner, Lescott & Hart was set up to contain Mario which City England 'defensive' trio performed up to par.

It goes without saying that if Mario had scored, City trio would have been vilified conveniently.

What a great set-up eh? To be the fall guys?

Just because you don't like his view on England thread, you call him retard here on Euro thread? It's not like he's 100% wrong on his assessment no matter how bias it sounds to certain people.

i use to read this everywhere -> "england play much better without rooney against sweden"

in fact, right after the below par milner was sub out by walcott, walcott equalize and then supply the assist to welbeck to score, so england play much better without who ?

Its true Roy has to unshackle England's defense or rope a dope to come from behind. Sweden's two goals were scrappy but I believed not the direct result or errors of Milner. Walcott was deservedly the MOTM.

Overall the match was played without Rooney.

Buffon: England suffer from Prem
England 'struggle to have players from your own country playing in the top league'
QUOTE
user posted image
Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon has claimed the English Premier League is "no longer very faithful'' to the national team after they failed once again to pass the quarter-final stage.

Italy beat England on penalties and now prepare to face Spain in the Euro 2012 final in Kiev on Sunday and Buffon, who is looking to add another major international tournament to the World Cup in won in 2006, feels the answer lies in the Premier League's desire to attract the best players in the world.

The veteran goalkeeper is sure that the Premier League is the best in terms of quality, but does not feel that is the best way forward for the national side.

"Having a competitive league doesn't necessarily mean having competitive players,'' he said. "For a number of years now, the English league has had the best football and is the best league in terms of quality.

"The money that's in the game means they can go and buy anyone from all over Europe or the world. This can happen in Spain and Italy as well as England but the league in England is no longer very faithful to what the national side needs.

"With this footballing globalisation, it's very difficult. You struggle to have players from your own country playing in the top league.''

England have now gone out of six competitions on penalties, including three at the quarter-final stage.

Yet Buffon does not write the Three Lions off completely.

"The England national side has its own strengths and they're a lot more physical than other sides,'' he added.

"But England aren't very lucky. They've lost on penalties in the last five or six times, so the margins between winning and losing are very thin indeed.''

One never knows whether Lahm's goal against Greece could have been prevented. The likelihood of it been prevented is very high in my estimation. Given that a lot of shots are being blocked by 'parked buses' teams in this Euros.

If you reviewed it again you will see the Slovenia referee (inadvertently or not) provided a 'pick' (against two converging Greek players) for Lahm to strike.

Referees are known to influence matches subtly by interposing themselves or getting themselves in the line of play i.e taking sides.

Just imagine if Greece had advanced, this Euro's will have lost its glamour, subsequent attendances will be down, providing the sponsors less 'benefits'. The Greeks are the poor cousins of Europe just like the Irish, Croatia etc...

guys, do you realize, since euro divided to group stage & knockout stage, both finalist come from different group & same group alternately

1984 - france (group A) vs spain (group B)
1988 - netherlands vs soviet (both from group B)
1992 - denmark (group A) vs germany (group B)
1996 - germany vs czech republic (both from group C)
2000 - france (group D) vs italy (group B)
2004 - greece vs portugal (both from group A)
2008 - spain (group D) vs germany (group B)
2012 - italy vs spain (both from group C)

and each tournament both finaliist from same group, they met each other in first game.

in 1988
euro 1988

in 1996
euro 1996 group c

in 2004
euro 2004 group a

in 2012
euro 2012 group c

maybe in 2020 we can predict both finalist after first game of the group stage

Balotelli scored 3 goals in 6 games

Torres, Gomez, C.Ronaldo scored 3 goals in 5 games

But Torres and Gomez have an assist to their names

Mandzukic and Dzagoev both scored 3 in 3 games

Dzagoev played less minutes than Mandzukic

Kudos to Spain for winning jogo bonito.
The beautiful game won.

Yes Spain just got into their 5th. gear in this final match.

Its too bad that Italy tank was empty after putting the pedal to the metal against Germany.

David Silva eluded 2 defenders which should have sandwiched him from the header.

Old or recent Injuries (Chilellini & Motta) needs healing time & rest in between matches. A luxury the Azzuris doesn't have.

What's scary is that Spain is young and have depth even to have Torres & Mata coming off the bench.
Its great to see Torres (deserves the Golden Boot) assisting Mata.

Remember a German woman cried during Germany vs Italy semi-final? The reality is that woman cried during Germany national anthem not after Balotelli scored the second goal that we all saw live on TV. So this is what Platini regime seek for; money, rating, coverage. Maybe alongside this:

It's no wonder he's not really in favour of technology for helping the official.
