just want to share a simple recovery method for OpenWRT via Scheduled Task in a scenario where the 3G connection somehow couldn't reconnect. It won't work with 3G modem using additional power source other than the router itself as we need a cold reboot for the 3G modem:
0 * * * * /bin/ping -c 10 58.71.132.10 || reboot

This scheduled task will run every hour to ping Maxis DNS for 10 times, it will reboot the router only if all 10 pings failed. you can change the frequency of when you want to trigger the task or the number of pings or even change the IP address to check.

I find this is the simplest method to use compared to using a watchdog. If you have other methods, please do share how/what you do to recover your 3G connections with this router.

I need an automated way to recover the connection because I have an IP Camera configured to keep an eye to a remote place where I only go when I really need to.

To remove the SIM Pin the only way I found is put it into your Android Smartphone or those legendary phone and disable it

iPhone I can't find an option for this doh.gif
*
it would be under Settings > Phone > SIM PIN

i think maybe it is the router capability
it can go only up to 21dBm i think
if i select the country Malaysia, the option for transmit power can go only up to 20dBm
for US, the option can go up to 27dBm but in reality, it change from 20dBm to 21dBm
hmm
*
you're right. here's a list of maximum transmit power for the TP-Link routers that I have:
1. WR1043ND - 23dBm
2. MR3420 - 21dBm
3. MR3020 - 18dBm

I'm eyeing this: TP-Link TL-WDR4300

OpenWRT wiki page here: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wdr4300

No one tested with 3G yet.

nice product with 2 USB ports. Can easily do load balancing and failover without additional hardware. thumbup.gif
what's the expected price?

I actually don't feel it too but the USB cannot drive my modem properly, easily D/C compared to MR3420 or PC

P/S mine is 1043ND V1.8
*
I'll check what version is mine tonight. Have you tested it with the USB Y-cable to supply more power to the modem like Chuah was using last time? If it's the same, it might not be power issue already. tongue.gif

Sell it cheap cheap to me if you intend to let go. whistling.gif

By the way, how to do disconnect my connection and reconnect it again without rebooting the whole router? smile.gif
*
from Chuah's instructions until the Network step, just click this Connect button on the WAN interface and it will disconnect and reconnect automatically.
