hiya all..

am planing to trade in my D90 soon for a D700 (if D700s/D800 come out by mid 2012 then i really doh.gif)

i need some opinion to pick my 1st FX lens... i primarily use my camera for shooting when traveling smile.gif

which do u guys think is best as a traveling lens??

1) AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

2) AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

3) AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED

lets assume budget is not a problem ATM

thanks y'all in advance notworthy.gif

1. D700 cost rm 5800 to 6200 now and if D800 is out, it will cost 300,000 yen according to nikonrumors.com. should be around rm 12,000. street price is cheaper so it should be like rm 10,500. there is a huge price difference here. are you prepared to pay?

2. D700 = 12MP whereas D800 = 36MP (according to nikonrumors.com again) do you need that high of resolution?

3. Please pair the D700/D700s/D800 or whatever awesome camera that you are planning to get with an equally awesome lens. is changing lenses a pain in the arse for you? if not, why don't consider prime lenses? is manual focus a pain in the arse for you? if not why don't consider carl zeiss? 24-70 lens is awesome by the way
*
1. D700 then... 10k is definitely out of my range .... even if it comes out now... i will have to wait for a couple of years for the price to drop.. sweat.gif

2. 12MP is enuff.. blush.gif i think the largest my pics will be displayed is on my 24" monitor as wall paper ... don plan to print posters... tongue.gif

3. Yeap.. the D700 is an awesome body... it sud go wif the best lens... i am leaning towards 24-70 becoz of bigger aperture n better speed... since my camera is used for traveling mostly, so if can i wanna bring along juz one lens... the D700 + 24-70 lens + bag is already around 2.5kg sweat.gif
prime lens will be the 2nd lens to get once my wallet recovers.. the 50mm f1.4G looks good smile.gif

If im you i might carry a 16-35 f4 vr , and 50mm prime for travelling only.
Also depends where you travel  smile.gif
*
primarily will be traveling/backpacking overseas... yeap.. ur two lenses above will cover taking wide angle scenery shots n portraits... they r both cheaper n lighter too than the 24-70...

i guess i will try all the lenses out at the shop b4 i buy them smile.gif

QUOTE(Sadru @ Oct 5 2011, 04:46 PM)
hi all fellow nikonians,
i am currently in dilemma regarding issue whether to go for 50mm f/1.8g @ sb700.

my current gear were basic d90 with 18105vr

were graphic student and my budget were below rm800 atm to spend.. normally i would prefer to shoot human/portrait on daily basis.
there will be some portrait assignment coming on later, as i read prime were good for portrait and the flashgun also play important role within that category..

i know there definitely will be some limitation without the flashgun, but would 50mm f/1.8g justifies for the price? would it be sufficient enough for portraiture shot? i also inclined toward flashgun but with these rm800 budget, i am totally torn on which to choose on the first buy.

im leaning toward 50mm but the flashgun would also come in handy, whats your call on this guys?
help~!  cry.gif
*
if me 50mm... too bad i juz sold my 35mm f1.8 DX lens yesterday tongue.gif

u don really need a flashgun for lighting... a sifu yesterday showed me some portrait pics taken using car lights n street lights smile.gif

maybe nikonrumours got the specs rite but the model name wrong... this mite be the D4X???

kinda odd for nikon not to update their flagship model.. then only roll out a cheaper version... like D3 then only D700

kinda worried now that D700 will be short of stock if D800 rolls out... n 12K is definitely over budget for me..

What is you all understanding from the article?

if the policy apply to Malaysia,

Meaning that all shop must sell at recommend retail price?

From what i read, this policy will not apply to Euro because their law prohibited such practice.

How about Malaysia?
*
i think Nikon Malaysia also have policy that their equipment sud be sold at the RRP...

the boss of the shop i go to keep warning me every time i buy something, not to inform Nikon Malaysia about the price he give me... or he will get into trouble... he says it jokingly so i dunno he serious or not sweat.gif

but this policy make senses becoz too much pricing competition will eliminate a lot of small time sellers and concentrate the market into a few big players... meaning they will have Nikon's ball in their hands...

or cud be the official nikon stores r complaining becoz they cant sell anything... rolleyes.gif

Is a sales strategy to imply that they sell it really cheap. Plus he told u the price drop is to make u had a mindset that it is cheap by that time and also gives u an urge to buy it on the spot as well. However, RM11,700 is still kinda cheap i reckon in fact it is approximately $300 dollars cheaper when compared to grey imports. Good deal there  rclxms.gif

Where do u buy it anyway? I can get my gears there next time  tongue.gif
I reckon there is no restriction that sellers should sell at RRP. It is just a "recommended retail price" however I believe Nikon will set a price floor in the market to ensure competitiveness.
*
ya... the boss is a very good salesman laugh.gif i think he sells on average a DSLR every day sweat.gif

cool~ thanks.. didn't know about that..

btw.. wanna ask you guys.. is it hard to manual focus on UWA lens?

was thinking, should i get the tokina 11-16 on my d5100.. @_@ or my current kit lens (or 35mm) would do for landscapes?
*
used to own this lens and i am quite happy with the results...

i nv tried the nikkor 12-24 b4 but this is a cheaper lens which suits my need.... distortion is minimal...

UWA lens produces photo of different (wider) perspective... makes ur foreground look bigger... different effect from a standard prime lens...

only downside is the zoom range is very limited and is to me a dedicated UWA lens...

QUOTE(tatagal @ Oct 24 2011, 01:46 PM)
Last week, I played with my D7000 Auto mode and manual mode. With the same aperture, shutter speed, ISO and flash setting, I found that image taken using Auto mode looks better in terms of colour. Any particular reason?

When I viewed the picture taken in the camera, i press up or down on the mode dial, the setting of ISO, shutter speed and aperture for both pictures taken will appear, it is exactly the same ISO, shutter speed and aperture. the ONLY difference is there is some "AUTO thingy" shown at the most bottom right for the the picture taken by AUTO mode! Anyone know what is this which cause the difference between 2 photos taken?

Thanks.
*
Are the White Balance & Picture Control settings the same???

Good question! I did not change any of those! I believe WB is the same! Will auto mode automatically select the picture control? So far, I have never changed and play with picture control setting yet! If we are selecting the manual mode, do you normally still play with the picture control setting for every photo you take?
*
I usually shot in RAW... the Picture control can be changed later using the camera software..

maybe ur WB is set to non-auto when in manual... but when u select full auto mode, the WB also become auto.. (i think this is how the camera behaves la)...

I was wondering if there is going to be a replacement for D700, because i thought of buying a D700.... Advise anyone?

welcome to the FF club tongue.gif but nikon has an announcement schedule on Oct 26... possible D700 successor.. juz wait 2 more days lar tongue.gif

QUOTE(Agito666 @ Oct 24 2011, 02:27 PM)
maybe the auto WB messed up?  hmm.gif
under florescent light?
maybe there is a TV in the background... what is shown on the screen can mess up the metering too... but as celcuiz said.. cant really comment if the photos not posted..

Hello guys, my friend's camera filter is 'locked'. cannot open it, like super glued to the lens. how? icon_question.gif
*
most likely the thread was not aligned properly when ur fren screwed it in... and ur fren twisted harder becoz macam tak masuk...

happened to me once... luckily i twisted harder and it came out... but becareful not to damage the lens thread!!! prepare to sacrifice the filter to save the lens

if kenot come out.. bring it to the shop... i am sure they encounter this alot b4...

i have a extreme solution that involves power tools in a proper workshop... laugh.gif
