when iphone is locked mode (the screen is black and not visible) , is there anyway to make the screen visible without pressing any button (power, home, volume).
*
1. Plug in USB sync cable (with power)
2. Press and hold the stereo headset button (technically still a button :-/
3. Call iphone from another phone.
4. Wait for alarm to go off.

Just preparing for the worse. My iPhone4 home button is dying. So's the one on my wife's iPhone4. Both of us are now using AssistiveTouch plus Activator gestures to avoid stressing the Home Button but those only work when the phone is awake.

You can set Activator to use the volume button to unlock the phone. I use the vol down button to unlock but since I am required to have a passcode lock, sometimes if the phone goes to sleep, the vol down button won't work especially if the screen is off. What I do then is use the power button to wake the screen and then use the vol down button to unlock.

Yeah, I've been using the Power button to wake the phone for now. The home button still works but I gotta press it in a certain way. Could have sent it in for warranty but alas the phone was australian.
