If you go for this job :

50% you'll be gay
20% you'll be drug addict
20% you'll be gambling all days and be a stupid gambler in the future.
10% you'll get AIDS or HIV.

Why?
Once you arrive your destination, let's say : Dubai.
The agent at there will give you your salaries once you depart, and there'll be many whores at there waiting for you to satisfy yourself. And your money will be gone very fast.

Unless you know how to control yourself. (5% of all are capable of doing that ONLY)

Destroyer,

Is it possible to go into the specifics of the following aspects

1.) Career Path of a Seafarer, seems like there are many ways to enter and not always from cadet level, or does everyone have to enter as a cadet ? what about those degree holders ? i am assuming that everyone starts from the bottom

2.) Scholarships available and the pro and con, is there a company which you should be concern about before bonding with them ?

3.) Which companies can you normally work with and their reputation, like do you have a choice in which ship you join when you are with a company ? is it always in your power to change ?

Sorry for the noob-like questions, i might be concern about the wrong thing or ask in the wrong context.

1st of all , which department are you interested? deck or engine

1) well , it really depend to ur current age and qualification , best option is to join as cadet , atleast you go through training to become officer or engineers . unless you want to become crew ,which another option , u need to climb up the ladder and collect your own money.

2) yes , there's pro and cons , for alam total fees will be 80-90k now , not including extra courses which require before you join ship as officer or engineer , each type of vessel have it own requirement of training. when youre bonded with a company , you can always jump to other company , but you have to pay the total amount they have spend on you during training . most of my batchmate graduate under AET , bt end up join another company , because the company want the fresh grads to join ship as crew for 1 year instead of becoming officer or engineer..

3) this is one of the most crucial part , for now if you join misc , u will end up climbing up the ladder a bit slow because of over supply of deck officer , currently 1 lng vessel have 1-5 junior officer .. unless youre freelance , you can join any company you want . collect seatime , self sponsor to upgrade ur coc , once you have enough seatime , what most of the officer are doing now.

so this my help

Most probably deck, I got business degree, but am interested in doing engineering side of things, wonder how possible is that, willing to learn just need to know how much harder it is.

1. Already 27, that my concern, as it feels like too late to start from the very bottom now. What do you think ?

2. Is there any company which dont ask you to be crew when the give you scholorship ? Is it possiblle to get scholarship from company such as Mearsk

3. Any other option besides joining misc ?

1. to be honest , the maximum age for cadet is 24.. it always not too late , if you really love the industry , but think first , how long do you want to spend you life at sea? most younger people will quit bfore 40 after collect enough money to start business and etc.

2. scholarship from maersk is very rare case in malaysia ..they only take senior officers from malaysia with experience

3. there are many other company if you want to start as crew , i recommend to go for offshore , because malaysia offshore company is doing very well now , example bumi armada ,alam maritim and sapura..bt they dont sponsor cadet ,and they dont take fresh officer .bt there's vacancy for crew and rating..

thats the age limit to join as cadet.
well , yes ..take bst course about 2k , then take tanker familiarization if u want to join tanker ship about rm1800 or take bosiet if u want to join offshore rm2400.

then join ship as ordinary seaman or able body seaman to collect seatime , im not sure how many month require before you can take your examination for officer license , you need to check with marine department.

for os and ab position salary usually 500 - 1000 usd .. this in your clean income ,without those side income etc.

what is the difference between officer and cadet ?

Also is it safe to assume that information regarding the learning path, career path, position title, job descriptions etc etc etc, is the same across the globe ? I am assuming this is right as the job is considered an international role so there are strict standard.

Meaning I can be reading from a US miritime website and it would be alright ? Or should I just source my information from Malaysia based websites ?

To become licence officers you're require to sail for atleast 12 month as cadet bfore you can take your oral exam with. Marine department
Yes it's same across the globe the only different is from which country you get your license from. It's multinational career, so the standard has been standardised for all minimum requirements but there is slightly different between company of ships owner and charterers requirements when you're looking for jobb.

Yes it should be alright

hi,

got a couple of questions that for seafarers out there.

thinking of switching from white collar to blue, kinda sick of office jobs.
my best time was when i was backpacking around different countries, living the life of a wanderer.
I only found out abt this job recently, sounds like the ideal job for me.
Good pay, get to see the world, something like a FIFO job.
i dont have financial or family responsibilities. so y not? haha

my concerns are as follows:

1. I am 26 yrs old now, is it too late to enter this trade? ALAM is out of the question, since they dont take recruits older than 25. Meanwhile the sarawak maritime school has an age limit of 28. Not sure abt the singapore one.

2. are students of my age common? i assume most of the students there are half of my age or decade younger haha, think i have problem fitting in?

3. I think i most likely go for the DNS course, since i did not took any science stream subject back in SPM, thus engineering is no go. my highest qualification is uni degree, albeit completely unrelated( biz degree). does it assist or hinder in any way to secure sponsorship from companies or entrance?

4. Is the standard duration of the course 3 years for all schools? How soon i get to go aboard the ship and sail? mid way through the course? and how long i have to spend studying in the academy? i dont really like the college lifestyle, just go class and hang around.

5. what is the sailing schedule like for someone new? X month work X month/break ?
