Hi,

I started piano lessons about 17 years ago and i stopped at Grade 1 or Grade 2 (I can't even remember).

Anyway, i wanted to take up piano lessons again, so i went to Yamaha in Subang Parade. I was told that it's a trend to start keyboard nowadays and it's very similar to piano.

True?

trend? dunno...

similar to piano? not really. only the keys arrangement is identical, the rest like weight/touch/respond is entirely different from a real piano, sometimes the size of the key is slightly different too.

the reason to start with keyboard simply because - cheaper, portable, doesn't take up space much, perfect for beginners which mostly learning how to recognize notes and keys. if you want to take exam, you MUST buy/rent piano to practice, exam will never provide anything other than real piano.

Well it depends on what type of songs you want to play, really. If you want to take it up as a casual hobby and just play pop songs, then I say go for the keyboard.

However, if you're serious in learning, and are interested in playing classical pieces as well as contemporary music, then it's better to invest in a piano. The touch is very different, I assure you.

for me, better start from the basic/simple which is keyboard, after your level is into intermediate, then go for piano.

its just similar to learn playing guitar, mostly started from acoustic guitar then go for electric. smile.gif

btw, keyboard is not bad though, nowadays keyboard got thousand of sound include piano. (which sound more to digital). but its good for the start.

Thanks for the input guys.

Well, it's more of a hobby for now, nothing serious. If i get more serious later, i will move on to piano.

I'm 17 this year, got my first "piano", a keyboard, 4 months ago, don't really have much time to invest on it.. although i listen to piano music A LOT, I still have to study for my SPM.. I'm loving my Casio CTK-3000 keyboard.. it's pretty nice! xD

I think if TS is serious should go to piano straight....keyboard is so...kiddie...it is not about how many sounds you can find in a keyboard, it's about the key's weight and feel....but i prefer digital piano...best of worlds...fun sounds and good feel!

btw, i started on keyboard first also...but guitar started with electric...but gave up guitar liao...at least i gets to make a lots of distortion noise...haha.

A piano is a piano, a keyboard is a keyboard. Not suppose to replace each other. Although a keyboard can do a piano sound, but it will never become keyboard (for near sometime at least)

So choose what you are intended for.

with piano, you can play any songs on a keyboard but if you practise on a keyboard, you might not get the same rich effect on the piano.

I'll say the piano...once u play on it...you'll never want to turn back to the keyboard.

The weight of the keys, the sound and the "feel". Keyboard doesn't have that extra oomph or solid feel.

Or you can have the best of both worlds, an electric piano. No need to tune sommore! biggrin.gif

Well, its actually up to you.. If you intend on doing performances or etc (bringing your instrument here and there) , better get a keyboard with good specs.. smile.gif

This is my opinion, though there are few ways to look at it.

Piano is great the feel of it and the sound I would say is more natural in comparison to keyboards. As much as how the newer keyboards emulate the piano in tone and pitch, the feeling is just not the same.

Moreover I guess some of the keyboards have quite a limited range in terms of octaves , but depending on what type of music genre or style you would like to play this could also work to your advantage, moreso the portability of carrying a keyboard around.

If you intend to want to experiment or play around with a number of synthesised instruments, then a keyboard is great to synthesize those digital instrument sounds , unlike a piano which is.. well just a piano tongue.gif

Then again cost wise is also a huge factor considering a piano can be a hefty investment compared to a keyboard. Nonetheless if your doing it as a hobby most likely keyboard is a better pick.

Moreso on a plus side I guess though this comes later keyboards these days can be plugged in for digital mixing.. if you are to get into that kind of thing. Classic pianos will be harder.. unless your looking more into an electric piano.. but that again is a whole new topic tongue.gif

Sorry for being so long, hope you have fun playing music.

hm..TS, i think it all depends on your budget. IF you living well off, can afford a piano and you're serious of taking up the lessons, go for a piano instead.

I was lucky my parents could afford a piano when I started taking up piano lessons many yrs back. I never tried a keyboard. But during school days I've tried playing my friend's keyboard, I could really tell that, with a keyboard, there's no... ermm.. ohmmm.. that feeling, the sound of the keys. are so different.

But if ur budget doesn't allow you, then just go for a keyboard. Cheap and save space.
