(NOTE: This is a completed project, for the final pictures, jump to page 3. thx for viewing notworthy.gif )

prologue (lolz....): this mod has been ongoing for the past 2+ months (and its pretty slow going due to bz-ness) but recently only i got time to do this worklog. hope u guys enjoy this mod and i truly welcome and appreciate all criticisms and constructive point outs. anything u think i'm doin wrg plz do correct me as this is my first case mod project. i codenamed this project "Insendious"

i'll be writing this worklog accordingly with the sequence of my work. enjoy biggrin.gif

after a long long long time of awwing and oogling at other ppls awesome works.... i've finally decided to start mine rclxm9.gif

bear with me ladies and gentlemen, and take a seat, its gonna be a bumpy ride, lolz

my fren upgraded his casing from a storm scout to a rv-02 *lucky bustered*
so y not buy over his case to mod since its a cheap case? lets do this thumbup.gif since i'm kinda reluctant to work on my bigger haf 932 cuz err.... it kinda cost me alot? lolz sweat.gif

an intro to this rig i'm gonna build, this rig will have a evga nforce 790i ultra sli for a mobo and a Q9650 for my cpu. well, this old school mobo and cpu is something i've wanted for a long time, and i'm finally getting those. hahaha. both of these i got from ebay, the guy sent it to my friend studying in us and she brought it back for me haha rolleyes.gif thats awfully sweet of her dun u think? lolzzzzz. thx anyways!!! the rest of the rig i'll show u as we go along aites? thumbup.gif
sry to say that i cannot show u any initial pictures of the casing's condition cuz i kinda tore it apart the second he took all his
hardware out from the scout...

but i'm glad to say that i CAN show u the inital pictures in bits and pieces of the casing rclxms.gif

well, since it was used for quite some time it was pretty dusty, normal stuff. UNTIL i took out the steel handle bars. i was like OH EM GEE shocking.gif

user posted image

well, i really didnt expect handles to rust this bad. seriously, no protective coating? i gonna need to do something bout those.

so first things first, i've decided to make this a very high air flow case. which means mounting a LOT of fans onto my case which includes making blowholes for additional fan inputs and improve the existing ones. i kinda look high and low for holesaws but nobody sells a holesaw around 120mm or 140mm which is quite a bummer. worst case scenario, dremel it myself? lolz. i asked my dad and he told me to send it to a engineering workshop to do it. so y not? time to make measurements and mark all the points for drilling and cutting.

i use masking tape to draw on the dimensions and stuff.

user posted image

user posted image

yup, 2 140mm fans on the top. 1 i juz gonna cut it to improve airflow and the other gonna cut a fresh new hole. same goes for the plastic.

user posted image

likewise, cut a hole for the front intake for better airflow

user posted image

and i have special plans for the sidepanel without the acrylic window brows.gif so i used masking tape again to allow me to draw the template of the sidepanel window and what else better to use as a template if not the existing one rclxm9.gif

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

so with that done its time to send it off to the pros at metal cutting lol. and i'll move on to the sleeving XD

yup, sleeving time!!!!! rclxm9.gif
this will be my first time sleeving and hell, i went through hell learning all the hooks and crooks of cable sleeving. so i started sleeving the cm sickle flow fans and normal 140mm fans which i ordered.

user posted image

user posted image

lolz. i think 6 120mm and 4 140mm is juz nice dun u think? rolleyes.gif
so meddling around, decided that it'll be too troublesome to keep the 3 pin to 4 pin adapter that most fans has. so y not juz cut them off and rewire them???

user posted image

yes i know the right one was the fail one. wakakaka whistling.gif i eventually cut it open again and rewire to the left one. lolz.

well, since this a green and black themed mod it isnt right to leave the red power and hdd leds right?

user posted image

so off they go, and green is the new red thumbup.gif (no offence to fans of red leds, i myself am one, with my red led haf 932 lolz. its juz i wanna try different colour nia. chill k?)

lolz, so with that outta the way, bring in the picture galore of my new sleeved cables icon_rolleyes.gif i'm so loving sleeved cables, its so awesome its blinding me rclxm9.gif

if anyone of u caught sight of the lamptron humvee 5.25" bay switch, yes i'm planning to make all my fans led to on and off at my direct command.

lolz. problem was, it didnt work. i rewire the fans led exactly from this website, http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=154804 while his worked, mine didnt. 3 of the leds will work. but 1 wont. finally at my last test, the led burnt with a big pop, sparked and fzzzz with a small jet of fire. and smoke was visible and my sis was like, what smell is that???? sweat.gif

sry no pics for that incident. blush.gif so i decided to go with an alternative and cut every single led off. since the fans are transparent, y not use ccfl to make it shine instead? since it'll be my first time using ccfl, decided to do a bit of research. well, someone said the cm aurora was good. well, got it, and to me it was hands down junk doh.gif it was yellow when it was suppose to be green. and not even a pleasant yellow. if anyone wants a peek at it i'll upload it aites.

finally ordered some from niclasteoh. nucleartech ccfl. and package arrived!! rclxm9.gif

user posted image

hooked it up, and walllaaa!!!! brilliant and awesome green.

user posted image

heres a few more pics in low iso and low aperture to captivate only the ccfl radiance. wakakaka.

user posted image

user posted image

well, the ccfl wasnt the only thing in the package from niclasteoh. it came in this big box lol

user posted image

here comes the acrylic sidepanels which i ordered and engraved on.

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

all i can say is niclasteoh made a fine job for this. making sure that he has every detail i want and he even went as far as redesigning it for me so that the cnc machine could engrave it. really recommended if u guys planning to get ur acrylics thumbup.gif

well, now u understand y i'm cutting a window for the other side panel. well, since its green its only befitting for a snake to be its emblem, and the name insendious, well, i kinda created the name for a snake for a novel i was working on, and was inspired by the fire spell in harry potter rolleyes.gif the picture of the snake is NOT mine, i found it on google images lolz. so i dun hold ownership or copyright for this images in case the owner comes looking for me lolz >.< the font for insendious is the kingdom hearts font which i downloaded from dafont.com

background stories aside, here are some acryllic fan grills which will be stuck onto the top plastic part of the case where the newly formed blowhole is at icon_rolleyes.gif

well well well, here are the freshly cut (well, not very fresh right now though sweat.gif ) top and sidepanel of the case!!!! the top is pretty well cut. and not to mention they use a dremel to do it. pretty sweet skills i must say.

user posted image

and here is the sidepanel. well, if u ask me it looks as if they abit like simply cut la. lolz. the edges they didnt curve properly and so. and the edge towards the front of the panel they cut more than they shud. so a lot of repairing will need to be done.

user posted image

user posted image

here is the panels side by side for ur viewing pleasure thumbup.gif

user posted image

and i was deciding if i wanna put the acrylic grill on top or btm.

user posted image

user posted image

and oh well, i settled for btm rolleyes.gif

and i forgot to mention rolleyes.gif package from lingloong!!!! rclxm9.gif

user posted image

yea, what else is more beffiting than the xfx black edition psu to go with this theme? haha.

user posted image

and the purpose i put the psu in is to measure up for the psu cover that i'm gonna make from green acrylic. i've decided to mount my psu this way cuz well, the fan on the psu is juz gorgeous and the psu side label here is nicer as well. haha.

more cable sleeving action as i've got more sleeves and a 24pin and 8pin extension from topazzatale. his sleeves are awesomely good. high density at a very good price. thumbs up bro thumbup.gif
here goes sleeving the extension. i use a led leg and a tweezer to remove the pin haha

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

a pretty good first shot i guess. except i accidently broke 1 contacting pin and had to salvage the pin from another psu. its in good working order now but 1 cable is shorter than the rest. i think i'll fix it on a later date. anyhoo, heres the final product rclxm9.gif

user posted image

user posted image

spanking, dun u think? rolleyes.gif

well, woke up and package arrival!!! yup, i ordered something new from lingloong thumbup.gif

user posted image

user posted image

yup, the thermaltake jing. a pretty good spec cpu cooler with an awesome colour to suit this theme.
opened it to take a look at this beauty.

user posted image

and juz mounted it onto the mobo to make sure the mobo heatsink doesnt clash with the cpu cooler hmm.gif

user posted image

and what do u know? err...... 2 maybe 1 mm clearance. phew... that was close. lolz.
and disassembled for a possible makeover *hint* brows.gif

user posted image

well, and now you're up to date with my work log rclxms.gif

today i juz done the hardmods for the steel handles, the top metal and plastic, and side panel. and overall also the painting. i thought i was gonna take a week but done it in 1 day. what do u know? thumbup.gif

so heres my current dilemma. the thermaltake jing, as u all know, it has a well, pretty ugly beige grey kinda colour but an awesome coloured fan. so i need all of ur opinions. shud i paint it to black? looking forward to ur opinions rclxm9.gif

hahahaha. yea 4 pairs of ccfl. thats y i'll be including some mods to make sure it doesnt really light the whole thing up. main purpose of the ccfl is to replace the fan green led which i lost.
thx for the compliment on the cable sleeving tongue.gif

UPDATE!!!! wakakaka~ this is what i did yesterday... er... 1/9/2011 lolz

got started on the hardmods. so first things first i took out my powertools to start with the grinding to remove all the rust that accumulated (my bad sweat.gif i took so long before i started the hardmod lol)
and well, i kinda forgot to take pics while i was doin all those so very very sry hahaha.

i also popped all the rivets holding the top part of the case so i can grind it easier, sand a bit then start with the paint job.
nothing spectacular though. but the paint had a very nice coat. i used the flat black TOA brand. for me TOA is the best cheapo spray paint. only rm6 for acrylic lacquer which is a pretty good price compared to the crappy aerosol spray paint cans doh.gif useless one.

heres the top part of the case where i removed being painted on

user posted image

well, after so many years of learning the art of spray painting i can gladly say that i am satisfied with the outcome hahaha. my first real spray paint job was to paint my silver toshiba satellite L310 in 2009. well a lil sidetrack pics rolleyes.gif

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

coming back heres the side panel which i took my time with this. lolz. took a while to smoothen and curve the edges. also included 2 bumps towards the front to mask the chunk metal they took off when cutting it. but i'm pretty satisfied with the outcome biggrin.gif its already sanded with 120, 200, 400 grit sandpaper to smoothen it out.

user posted image

heres the front panel where the front intake fan is suppose to be. here i juz grinded, lightly sanded and sprayed on the flat black. take note for this metal parts i did NOT use any primer as i'm pretty confident with a few coats this paint wont chip easily icon_rolleyes.gif

user posted image

heres my work area haha. juz for picture sake lol.

user posted image

and heres the spray paint i'm using. i'm using the ace premium for the sidepanel cuz i wan a nice good coat over it. this i will spray a primer for better surface. almost everything else i'm using the TOA brand. except for plastics. we'll get to that later.

user posted image

heres the plastic top ready for painting.

user posted image

for plastics i'm using the krylon fusion for plastic. its very good for plastics. cuz i realize regular acrylic lacquer or aerosol paints on plastic chips off very very easily so i got this instead for a good bond. heres a link http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic/ i kinda forgot to take a photo of mine hehe rolleyes.gif

heres the sidepanel already went through the priming and now the surface coat. while learning spray painting a lot of ppl say that we shud sand the primer before applying the surface coat. but from experience i dun think thats really necessary unless u mess the primer coat pretty badly though. juz my 2 cents smile.gif

user posted image

i went through 3 coats of primer for each side and 3 coats of surface coat for each side as well tongue.gif

my messy wet sanding area lol

user posted image

ah.... heres the steel handlebars grinded and sanded as much as i could to get the rust off (i got lazy after a while lolz) i'll be spraying multiple coats of paint to make sure it doesnt happen again. i was considering the rustoleum paint but then well, its not really worth it for something i cant see so oh well lolz.

user posted image

well i sprayed and i sprayed and i sprayed sommor. inhaling all those toxic gas is gonna kill me good and young lol. continued next post thumbup.gif

and more UPDATES!!! whee~~ i'm on fai-yar!! lolz. anyway heres for what i did on 2/9/2011 blush.gif

in summary what i did today was bought more paint and continued with where i left off yesterday, mostly juz spray painting whatever thats needs to be painted. okok so enuf talk and lets move on

i got my hands on a cooler master 4-in-3 device module (freaking long name sweat.gif ) and well, i want it in black. since they dun have it, i juz have to make it black myself kekeke

disassembled and rdy to paint

user posted image

ok, so heres the deal. i've decided to paint the thermaltake jing grey plastic parts to BLACK. well, this is a do or die thing and i'm taking a huge leap of faith with my fingers crossed that it'll turn out alright icon_question.gif

i covered the fans with pieces of a4 paper which i cut and used cellophane tape to hold everything together. lets juz hope this works

user posted image

and heres my spray painting area. haha. wonder where i get so many boxes? lolz

user posted image

the cm 4in3 chillin in the sun. as u can see from the cardboard i've been spamming the TOA flat black on it. i actually lost count how many coats i gave it. though i can safely presume its roughly 2 cans of spray paint lol.

user posted image

cuz this part is gonna scratch againts the 5.25" bay itself and hopefully in its tight fit it'll still be scratched and black. haha.

moving on heres the fan bracket for the jing goin through an extreme makeover. for the fan mount and bracket i'm using the krylon fusion for plastic as well.

user posted image

user posted image

here's my sister doin a stencil of the cm storm logo for me. in exchange i buying her snowflakes sweat.gif
to use or not i'm not too sure yet and i'll see how it goes lolz

user posted image

and here i was testing out the stencil

user posted image

and lastly here's my stupid dog disturbing me lolz. say hi to max sweat.gif at the back in the cage is dex doh.gif

come nightfall, after chilling with some friends of mine in AC and Snowflakes drool.gif time to check on my sprayed stuff. so get rdy for a run through a gallery of pics

first up is the side panel. personally i'm pretty satisfied with the outcome

user posted image

as u can see the surface is quite rough. i'm guessing its because of some paint which dried while airborne at the last remaining of the paint (yes i finished the can nod.gif) cuz when i run my finger its smooth but my finger will have a lil black black powder lol. i'm still leaving out to cure cuz the instruction says 5 days so lets not be hasty (dam kan chiong lolz) and once after i'll give it a thorough wipedown and we'll see how it is

front and back of the side panel

user posted image

user posted image

heres the top plastic parts and the plastic handle. i sprayed the plastic handle to match the texture of the other piece.

user posted image

as u can see its a bit rough. same case as the side panel. so have to wait till it cures then i'll wipe it down. but to me it looks pretty nice like that. like its military hardened from extensive usage kinda feel lolz tongue.gif

user posted image

user posted image

heres the metal top which i sprayed. very very satisfied with all the metal parts which i used the TOA brand. a very good finish. the matte black is very smooth and when tap it still has that nice metal ting. haha

and heres the cm 4in3 which went through some serious amount of paint. very smooth finish and very nice matte shade. couldnt ask for a better result laugh.gif

heres the rusted steel handles which i saved. now it looks very nice haha. sadly cannot show off cuz its inside haha. sweat.gif

user posted image

and last but not least, the finisher, the JING plastic brackets.
well, i would say the painting went very well and it turned out pretty good. but i'm really not feeling it la. the bright lime green for me not goin very well with the extremely dark shade the krylon gave. i think this will need more working on. but i'll let the paint cure for now while i think for a solution to satisfy my fussy-ness lolz

Added on September 5, 2011, 4:49 amUPDATE!!!! 3/9/2011

so now i'm getting to the cosmetics of the case. well, ever since i saw some mods with psu cover and hard disk cover i was like hm... great idea rclxms.gif so its time to do some myself.

so i got some leftover acrylic from the side panels i ordered from niclasteoh. so time to experiment with the acrylic to see what its capable of.

so to start things off nice and easy, i wanted to see how easy it is to bend acrylic and what temperature i would require to bend it easily. guides which i checked out didnt really state what temperature to use. but come to think of it different kinds of acrylics and thickness will have different temp ranges before it losses its rigidity and becomes malleable. so i manage to get a nice easy bend with 500c using the heat gun with a distance of say 5-10cm away moving constantly side to side. and this i what i got

user posted image

not too bad. so now with the bending test done, time to cut a nice long piece. first up i use the trusty dremel but err..... houston, we have a lil problem cool.gif

user posted image

well, it looks ok here but i didnt like the rough edges and it was not a very clean cut. which is pretty sad.

so lets upscale a bit and go nuts. good thing i bought a spare sheet in case of err... bad worksmanship on my end lol.

user posted image

so i used clamps and use a piece of wood to hold it down and this will give me something to guide the dremel rotary blade to go along and hopefully get a str8 line.

user posted image

well, with that much, its not really much of an improvement.

user posted image

and with the day finally coming to a close, i packed up my stuff frustrated with a not very good result and vow to try again the next day sweat.gif (drama betul doh.gif )

well, did i forget to mention i bought an acrylic cutter? hahaha. oops. honestly telling u i didnt really know how to use an acrylic cutting blade thats y i opt for the rotary cutter? hahaha. anyway juz to let u guys know i got my b&d drill, the dremel and most of the modding tools and powertools from reiben thumbup.gif thumbs up bro. haha. err... i think even reiben didnt know that cuz i ask my fren to buy from him for me wakakaka.

anyway, coming back, oh and heres to start the day with rclxm9.gif

MY NEPHEW!!! so cute and chubby!!! he's getting heavier wakakaka. uhhm... comin back, i finally googled how to cut an acrylic with an acrylic cutter and heres what i got http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCeHx-vvJ7k doh.gif so easy sweat.gif

fine, so with that knowledge in hand, (sry i got excited and forget take pictures lol) i used that newly learnt "skill" and put it to good use. and its not as easy as it looks sweat.gif in fact its pretty difficult to do it when u wanna cut about 40cm in length its not even funny. but i manage to do it and wallaaaa!!!!

user posted image

yup, and my dad asked me to use whetstone to shave the ends to make it cleaner instead of using the dremel or sandpaper (monster hunter style *shing shing shing shing PING sheeekk* laugh.gif )

and moving on to the bending of the sheets. seriously bending it is like so fun and easy. and cutting it is like ARGH!!! OMGBBQFTL!!!

user posted image

and on my next cutting venture i was like whoops~~ sheeeeek.... uh oh shocking.gif

user posted image

user posted image

yup, the blade slipped and cut to the side. well, i was in luck cuz my sis and cousin's wife gave me some artistic advice and came up with a brillliant idea

ta-da!!! artistic lol~ applause for the save rclxms.gif

so moving on after much cutting and measuring and bending a lil sneek preview?

user posted image

that would be my psu cover. a close up here

user posted image

and my hard disk bay cover with the very artistic design

user posted image

and the many spoils of the day that would make up the supporting parts to hold everything up

user posted image

some parts for the cosmetics department

user posted image

well, i'm feeling that much closer to this project's completion!!!!
so my next venture would be to choose a perfect match for the acrylic to hide everything. i mean, theres not much point to have a psu cover if its transparent right? lol hmm.gif

and whats this? a sneek peek of whats become of the jing?

user posted image

please do let me know what u think and whats nice and not nice and what i can do to make this project even better. really appreciate it rclxm9.gif

UPDATE!!!! (sry so late sad.gif )

finally huh. sry every1 but i've been real busy and also a bit dissatisfied with my work a bit la. well, the jing didnt really came out as what i had hoped for. and besides this project i've been working on a few mods for my com table as well as making a headset stand for my kave to sit on when i'm not using it biggrin.gif

anyway, back to business. following up my last work i've not really progressed very far. and also there was not much to do lolz. so its assembling time. take note that this worklog covered what i've done for the past 3 weeks or so lolz. so sry for the procrastination blush.gif

anyway i've started to put it all together, mainly the assembling part, so here i juz used hot glue to secure the 140mm acrylic fan grill to the top where i made the hole

user posted image

and i was trying to force in the ccfl and guess what happened

user posted image

yup, i didnt know the inside tube was the stiff 1 and the plastic cover tubing on the outside was the flexible 1. hahahaha. so ya cry.gif i think i've to get a new one doh.gif

heres where i wanted to put it haha. its quite a tight squeeze but i manage to pull 1 through haha. and i did this without the top on so the sides are more flexible

user posted image

and i placed the front intake fan with the ccfl that'll replace the fan led.

user posted image

i tot it'll be too bright so i bended the acrylic and used black paper to cover it so the light will not shine through. well, whats the point of putting the acrylic there if its transparent lolz rolleyes.gif

user posted image

heres the top fixed down. well, i ran into a lot of problems when i was about to rivet the top. the rivet my dad had wasnt working. fine, so the next day i went to the hardware shop. bought a rivet gun err... clap brand if i remembered correctly. got a pretty good discount. came home, the rivet gun didnt work doh.gif it didnt grip the rivet pin so i had to go back to the shop the next day. and i chose the stanley one instead. i ddint got it cuz it was kinda expensive but the lady boss gave me another pretty good discount so i was pleased. came back and it was working all good. lolz

user posted image

and then to put the handle bars in

user posted image

now to throw in all the wires i fixed back into the front panel into the hole lolz.

well i made another mistake here though lolz. when i was about to put in the final plastic piece back i was kinda surprised it didnt fit. and i realized i screwed in the steel handle bars in the wrong way. if u scroll back to the previous pictures u'll see it was the other way round. i unscrewed and screwed back 12 screws juz to make it right. heres the right orientation

user posted image

user posted image

with that finally done i was down to routing in the front panel wires. and there was a lot of them sweat.gif

user posted image

user posted image

and add in the 2nd fan for the top. yup the case is upside down lolz.

user posted image

another problem snapped up, the mounting holes in the stock side panel didnt match the acrylic panel i ordered for some weird reason so i decided ah, juz hot glue it. and here goes lolz

i position it then used masking tape to hold it while i hot glued it

user posted image

user posted image

and the issue that delayed the whole project. i was thinking the side panel isnt suitable for the theme. and also it wasnt very original so defeats the purpose of modding. so i decided to up it and go futuristic, a bit tron-ish. so i design the side panel on a A3 graph paper. and after a few days, heres what i got

user posted image

not bad i would say. lolz. so heres the plan, cannot juz cut it and put it over the top, the paint will definitely seep through. so to avoid that, i need the stencil to be sticky so it doesnt seep underneath the stencil. so i drop by lowyat and grab some laptop skin. those transparent ones.

user posted image

so i juz tape the skin to the A3 graph paper and cut it. once i cut the stencil i stick it onto the sidepanel rdy for painting. sry i totally forgot to take photos lolz. blush.gif

but heres kinda the end product. i was peeling half way and i was like hey, i shud be taking photos. so here goes.

user posted image

and finally the end product

user posted image

yesh!!! it worked lolz. and next update, the finishing touches.
stay tuned biggrin.gif

anyway this update will juz be the completed build and will juz picture galore biggrin.gif

heres what i chuck into the storm scout and it proved to be quite a challenge cuz err.... well lets face it, its a mid tower and it doesnt really have much space for cables to go all over the place

Processor: Intel Q9650
Motherboard: EVGA nForce 790i Ultra SLI
Graphic Card: Gigabyte GTX 460 OC Windforce Edition SLI
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Jing
Power Supply: XFX 750W Black Edition
RAM: 2 Corsair Vengeance 2x2GB 1600MHz CL9

thx tongue.gif
bout the rivets for side panel i dun think u can find similar plastic rivets that comes with the case. cuz i searched everywhere for it even CM dun sell it separately. have to either u bolts and nuts but i think ugly so i use hot glue instead. cuz if suddenly the glue like peeling can juz use heat gun to melt it again so it sticks back tongue.gif
