This is an open debate, everyone is allowed to post here as long the statement is constructive. In other words, please use some points to support your choice instead of mentioning the name of text editor alone.

Please do not post useless statements like:
- Notepad rocks!
- Editpad better la
- I support Textpad!
or anything else along those lines. Warning will be given to repeat offenders.

Your judgement can be made from
- User interface
- Resource consumption
- Extra features.

For download links, please refer to this post.

*Note*
Word processor != text editor smile.gif

This thread will be archived at Essential Reviews and Guides forum when the timeframe for this poll ends (15th October 2005) for future reference.

Crimson editor, UltraEdit, Crimson editor, Ultraedit......

Crimson editor - free, simple, ugly icon --> user posted image, a bit outdated (last built - sept 2004)
UltraEdit - 1337 features (like FTP, memory editing etc), not free, startup a bit slow.

My vote goes to UltraEdit since it's the "official" text-editor in my office, and very used to it already tongue.gif

Microsoft Word is word processor
Text editor doesn't allow you to do formatting, it just does plaintext editing with some syntax highlighting kind of things.

fast and simple. support plugins.

tried editpad lite. but quite limited...and the tabbing and default preference is just plain bad.

Voted for Crimson Editor.

Have also used jEdit and Textpad, but somehow find Crimson Editor's default syntax highlighting to be pleasing enough and it has a simplistic interface.

Voted for PSPad (others). Reasons:
i. It's free
ii. Support syntax highlighting (customizable)
iii. Able to call external assembler or compiler (IDE functionality)
iv. Integrated hex editor
v. Built-in FTP client
vi. Comes with spell-checker

Previously I was using Ultraedit, but it is not free. I switched to PSPad since it is very similar to Ultraedit in term of functionality.

It can be downloaded for free from here.

Edited to add the link since it is not available under "Text Editor" in the "Common Software Links."

XEmacs

A highly customisable text editor. Excellent for programming as well. Features include syntax coloured highlighting, smart tab...

Voted for EditPlus

IMO, it seems 'lightweight' (take minimal amount of memory/cpu usage) compare to others such as UltraEdit-32 etc. I might be wrong, but then it really load fast in my PC.

I will vote for NoteTab Light version 4.95

Reasons:
not only it is a text editor, it is also a HTML editor
Handle a heap of files with a simple tabbed interface
Search files, strip HTML tags and format text quickly
Build libraries of text macros to speed up your work
Open and edit many documents at once
Capable of editing huge text files
Text drag-and-drop editing
AutoCorrect/Auto-replace mode
Clip tool for quick and easy text insertion
Capture text sent to Clipboard

Last but no least it is 100% free -- no ads and no nags thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

GetDiz looks more like a text viewer to me rather than text editor.
