Hi all;
I am thinking of migrating to Australia either as a "Management Accountant" or "Accountant (General)". Just like some of the forumers here have pointed out, the biggest concern is getting the first job. If you can nail the first job, the rest will follow. I am not going to kid myself but this is going to be very hard securing the first job because I have no local experience, something that the local employers harp on. Any advice on this? By the way, i am not CA(Aust) but just ACCA (UK) with an Australian accounting degree. Maybe some accountants working in Australia can advice on this...

Also, is it true there is an over supply of accountants in the city??? But why Accounting has been listed on the Skilled Occupation listing for so many years if there is an over supply of accountants in the first place????

Anyway, my migration points are hovering between 65 to 75 ~ depending on my IELTS performance. The maximum that i can push is to 80 and that is with a state sponsor.

Hopefully, you guys can advice me on
- how to get your first job with a reputable/ decent company?
- how is the market for accountants?
- how is life during the first few years?

Well, we all are asking the question too. Recently DIAC did some reseach on the actual job demand to each occupation.
I have some friends who actually are Architect who worked 10 years but hardly get employed due to lack of Australian working  experience.
This worries me too as they're saying they're lack of these professional jobs but don't employ them with some strange reason.
Accountant is always job in demand. But how are you going be stand out from the competitors is an uneasy task. I know that IELTS has to get Band 7 or 8.
Now the required points is 60. If your point is 65 to 75, i assume you have Ozzie and malaysia working experience. State sponsporship is not required if you have pass the point.
If you're working as management level in Malaysia with RM10k or above, my advise is there's no reason for you to migrate. If you successful migrating there, be prepare that ang moh will posting you in junior or executive level only. It's not about racist, just that how you build their confident on you which might take time.
How to get 1st job in decent/reputable company? Well, i'm asking the question too.
How is the market for accountants? Competitive, my friend is searching for jobs which took her 6 mths.
How is life during the 1st few years? Miserable but not for long coz after 2 years, centrelink will provide you assistant.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I don't have any working experience in Australia ~ this prove to be the show stopper. The 75 points is mainly due to smashing the IELTS test and getting a band 8.0 for every single component in IELTS.

Can i ask? How long does it take to access the funds at Centrelink? My migration lawyer told me that if i can prove that i actively look for a job during the past 6 months, then Centrelink will commence to disburse funds for my living expenses. So, is it 6 months or 2 years? Also, what sort of financial assistance are made available to newly arrived migrants?

Thanks for the reply. Just need to plan for the worst and pray for the best. rolleyes.gif

By the way, how much buffer funds should we bring across to Australia? If we are assuming a period of 1 year without work? Please give a ballpark figure for
- rental,
- utilities (electricity and gas),
- internet and living expenses like groceries,
- insurance (medical + life),
- etc (anything else that is not mentioned on the list),
for living in Melbourne / or its surrounding suburbs.

Thanks for your help.

Annie Lee was right. It is quite hard to give one number that suits everyone. As some suburb is cheaper than another, and the cost of travel depends on distance from where you stay.

Here is the ballpark figure.
Rental including utilities: 1 room ($200/week); An apartment ($500/week)
Mobile line + Internet: $600/yr
Insurance (medical): $100/yr
Food + groceries: $30/day
Travel (Bus + Train): $1800/yr

Note: Just a ballpark figure for reference only.

Hi tatagal,
Can i re-confirm with you? Insurance (medical) is just $100 per year? Or is it supposed to be per month?
By the way, mobile line + internet of $600 per year is really cheap if compared to Malaysia.

I understand this is a ball park figure for reference only. laugh.gif

Anyway, thanks for your input. smile.gif

Ops. is $100/mth for the medical. Possible to get cheaper than that. You can check with Medibank, HBF, Bupa...  and get an idea what package you want.

Regarding the internet and mobile, can refer to Annie's comment. If you think you are normally going to skype back, you can go for prepaid mobile + internet instead of postpaid. Another option is to go for mobile broadband.

Hi Tatagal,

I just regress through this thread and noted that you are an accountant. Just asking, how are things on the ground for accounting? The competition for accounting is tough, no doubt...anything else to add?

Thanks for your input.

Trying yr luck in Aus? What happens if you are jobless for >1 year?
Do you have a family to feed? What is your current profession? Is it in demand or niche that Australia needs?

The last thing you want to do it to end up in dead end jobs like supermarket cashier, croupier, parking lot attendant, etc (no disrespect to those jobs).
If yes, better to be in M'sia.

Well, i guess is very much on yourself. For my case, i'm not selling all my property just heading down under besides selling my cars. It's all about personal decision and children education.
Always try and see how's it going. no harm to try, only burning some cash and time. Try do some casual work while looking for your profession job.
You won't starve to death.
Talk about cash, it's too subjective how much you gonna spend and which city you're staying. If you're staying in sydney or melb, it definitely rental is the highest in urban area. unless you're staying in kampung.
My piece of advise, if you alone earning RM 10k/mth in malaysia, no point for you to migrate. You can get a nice lifestyle back home. If less than that, then of course you could try. Malaysia is very much underpay which i think only banking and O&G industries could pay higher. Others might be not so lucky. (Please correct me if i'm wrong with this statement. Thanks!)
