I have a friend recently relocated to Melb mid last year and still unemployed... Lucky me only used SEEK and Indeed, and found a job only after 2 weeks and that was years ago. Yeap, just click and wait, but cover letters are sometimes essential so don't be lazy
My 2 cents, update your linkedin profile and apply for jobs advertised there as well - some are advertised directly by the company. Headhunters do lurk around there as well, I get an average of 2 messages a week from them even though I am not looking atm. This post has been edited by static: Feb 15 2013, 06:14 PM |

QUOTE(Alvin330000421 @ Feb 14 2013, 12:48 PM) What does your friend do? Perhaps he is not an Aussie grad? He was in procurement. Yeah, another friend of mine graduated 2 years ago as a mechanical engineer, could not find a job, ended up waitering for 2 years while doing his postgrad. They do look at your Linkedin profile? Yup, they actually do go through your linkedin profiles and headhunt for some of the big 4 companies (bank & audit) too. |

QUOTE(Nemesis1980 @ Feb 15 2013, 08:13 PM) IT is in demand now. My friend just get employed recently by the employer in Oz. LAst year the whole family just move over. It is, actually. Unfortunately, my job is specialized and can only work in banks, bummer... We have been trying to hire someone for this MIS reporting role, their resumes were IMPRESSIVE, but once we made them take a basic SQL test, all of them failed This post has been edited by static: Feb 16 2013, 11:12 AM |

QUOTE(Alvin330000421 @ Feb 14 2013, 01:10 PM) I have never seen $250 a week for room in Melbourne unless I am student and I agree to sleep in a domitory. Wow, $250 a week for a room is quite steep, right in the city centre? There are heaps of rooms available around for $180pw, walking distance to the CBD or just a few tram stops. Some houses might be old, but they are roomy. You can even get a very SMALL unit for $260 - yes, we lived in one for short term accommodation before, better than a dorm room.We are only charging $220 a week including utilities and internet, fully furnished with TV in the room for you. Own bathroom and shower to boot. Maybe we should increase our rent... |

QUOTE(underGr0und_8 @ Apr 1 2014, 12:31 AM) Hey guys. Just got my Visa 457 granted. Want to check out something from you all. I believe Ubank offers the best savings interest at the moment, but I'm with ANZ (staff lah..) and has a progress saver account which is a high interest savings acc. For most banks, you can waive off the monthly fee if you credit your salary (min 2k/month) into your account. What bank account you are using ? And what is the usual way if i am sending money back to home(malaysia) every month ? Charges involve etc etc Thanks in advance ! I use CBA to send money back to KL ($22 per international transaction, but sometimes you get promo rates of $8), can't be bothered opening a Citi account in KL. I'll just foot the fee.. Money usually in my Msia account that very night! Try sending money on quarterly basis if fees are involved (and wait out for the best time to maximise best forex rate). |

QUOTE(robertchoo @ May 4 2014, 11:22 AM) That is what I have been saying for the longest time but some people don't have the foresight or refuse to believe. And its not just affecting the engineering sector but its affects all sector from mining to banking. Wages in australia are just not equal to productivity levels. Its a matter of time before competitors gobble them up. I just can't see how aus can compete be other than tourism +1 on banking. We've had 3 waves of redundancy so far for the past 3 years I'm with the bank. Quite scary as you won't see it coming at all, they have cut down on hiring permanent staff as well and would prefer contractors/fixed terms instead. Was on contract for 2 years (varies from 3, 4, 6 months to a year depending on project and workload). |

QUOTE(LightningFist @ May 4 2014, 12:59 PM) Wow, I agree that banking is not in a good place right now but that sounds very harsh. You are on a PR visa? What subspecialty do you work in? I'm in risk and compliance. Yup I'm on my PR (spouse) visa, I moved here because my Aussie partner can't get a PR in Malaysia |

QUOTE(Nemesis1980 @ Nov 12 2014, 09:55 AM) Well, my friend, you just pin point the actual situation! haha I feel it was the other way around for me, maybe because I'm in the Risk area.. My job now is for angmoh is very stress and dealing with numbers. However, after been thru 14 years in KL really paid off. Sometimes it's like bushfire but consider small fire. Not like KL we're really working in 'forest fire'! Anyway, I would say for new migrants really need to jump into those jobs which no angmoh wanna do. Get experience at least a year then jump. |

QUOTE(aeron1111 @ Dec 23 2014, 11:44 AM) if you have 10 years working experience in malaysia also, when u go to australia, u r considered to have 0 experience..they need local working experience..so u hv to start from beginning..dun expect to get manager post there unless u r an influential person.. Yup true. I moved there with around 3 year working experience (uni grad) which is nothing tbh, got a role immediately in the same industry but just a small potato since i don't have any local experience. I wasn't after the money, i wanted the experience - we all need to start somewhere and there's no short cut in life. I was really happy when i got the job although it was paying peanuts! 3 years later ... I'm now a manager |

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, I've been living in Melbourne for 4 years now and have plans to renounce my Malaysian citizenship in the future and get an Aussie passport instead - reason being my partner and myself plan to travel the world (and work) and easier to have the same passport as some countries allow defacto/wife/husband to piggyback on my visa. We are not married, just defacto - together for 6.5 years now.
I currently have PTPTN loan which i have been diligently paying off every single month as per the schedule, do i need to pay it off in bulk once i renounce my citizenship? I also am a guarantor for the family car, how will this affect them? What if I also have a car loan under my name? I guess I can't keep my local bank accounts anymore? Advice appreciated. I love living in Melbourne, but have offers from HK/overseas and we are both considering uprooting to HK and join my ex boss but I'm just in a dilemma whether to get an Aussie passport (i still love Malaysia) or sign marriage papers (ugh). Looking at the HK work visa, i think their definition of spouse is married spouse only This post has been edited by static: May 16 2015, 06:19 PM |

QUOTE(selvenz @ May 14 2015, 10:43 AM) Ironic a buddy just landed in melb less than two weeks and already found a job in his field . Network Security specialist. Albeit at a junior level considering he has 10 years solid experience but the fact he still found a job so quick. I found mine within a week or so, with only 3 years working experience (that was 4 years ago). It's not impossible, i was shocked too when they offered me the job on the spot, I thought I flunked the interview but the managers thought otherwise. They didn't even look at my degree d'oh. All they care was my work experience and how I presented myself. Still grateful that they gave me the opportunity and I'm still in the same team! |

QUOTE(hanknives @ May 19 2015, 10:34 PM) if u dont mind bro, which field are u in? do u get the offer in the city? i plan to work in melbourne in construction field. do u think i got chance? Alamak i'm not bro lah Construction? As in surveyor, manager, labourer, engineer, etc? Have no friends in construction though TBH, i would say that if you can get a visa, why not? Give it a shot and see how it goes. Bunk with friends if possible, don't be picky about job offers and give it your best. Just take it as an opportunity for a better future, otherwise at least you gave it a shot. |
