QUOTE(TeliLeti @ Aug 23 2013, 08:55 AM) Hedgies are hardy pets. Just make sure that you feed it daily (I hope you know how much and what NOT to feed it). yeah,i'm doing some reading. just hope my parents won't simply throw food inside like what they did to my dog.anyways, i thought of using cloth as bedding. is there any type of cloth that i should not use? |

QUOTE(TeliLeti @ Aug 23 2013, 08:19 PM) Glad to hear that you're taking the proper steps to learn about taking care of a hedgehog. Fleece. I went to Tesco but couldn't find it. Maybe I'll try finding at other Tesco. Do you have a picture of the packaging?Any sort of cloth would be fine. However, make sure that there are no loose strings that a hedgehog could catch its' foot on. There have been cases where the string wraps around their limbs, cutting off circulation (which could lead to amputations). A lot of hedgehog owners (overseas) use fleece. You can find it in Tesco or any other stores easily nowadays for about RM15 or less. You can reuse it so it's eco-friendly, I suppose. A lot cheaper than what I use these days (http://www.petloverscentre.com.my/highlights/2012/Jul/34.jpg) because I'm lazy. You can use wood shavings too, but you have to change it more often compared to this bedding. I tried other cheaper types of paper bedding too but they turned out very dusty (which is bad for the hedgies too). edit: ok. nevermind. turns out fleece is a type of cloth. i thought its a type of bedding made for pets. oops. Questions:
1. When should I feed? since they are nocturnal, should I feed morning or night? 2. Is one 1 tablespoon a day enough for 3mth hedgie? 3. Will they show signs that they are hungry? |

QUOTE(TeliLeti @ Aug 25 2013, 10:09 PM) 1.) It's up to you, really. Doesn't make much of a difference as far as I can tell. I usually feed them in the morning. Ok. I dont wana overfeed him. I have yet to get a wheel.2.) I've been feeding each of my hedgies one tablespoon a day since they were 3 months. Haha. 3.) Nah, they don't whine or make noise like other pets do. However, I found that my hedgies tend to run to their food bowl (and sometimes lie in it) when they hear me opening the can that keeps their food (I think they smell it). Basically, feed 1 tbsp. every 24hrs. This post has been edited by 86Aries: Aug 26 2013, 02:17 PM |

is it better to leave the heggie inside the cage exposed or give it a place to hide? because i thought of letting him get used to the new environment and noises, so that he's not timid. i currently let him hide in his box all the time and each time i lift the box, he'll curl up, huff and pop. let him smell my hand but no respond. and i think i'm stressing him out with the bonding.

QUOTE(TeliLeti @ Aug 27 2013, 08:01 PM) Many say that the hedgies should have a place to hide, so it's better to give it a box or something. However, my hedgies don't have a place to hide, so I don't think it matters much. He's probably still adjusting to his environment. Or you just have a very temperamental hedgehog. I took his box away and replace with a cup. That way I can see him. Saw him eat and drink too, which was a relief.Out of my 5 hedgies, Huffster is the only temperamental one. Before he went blind in both eyes, he used to huff and puff at me all the time even though he knows it's me. Since he went blind in both eyes, he doesn't huff so much at me anymore after he smells my fingers because he knows it's me. I think his sight made him even more nervous before this. I guess you can try the T-shirt method (wear an old T-shirt overnight, put it into its' cage for a few days) so he gets accustomed to your scent. Btw, do they respond when you call them? QUOTE(TeliLeti @ Aug 28 2013, 04:37 PM) No, they don't respond. I know because I could be calling one hedgie's name, and all five of them would be waking up and staring at me. Hahaha. At least they wake up and stare. Mine will be...if I want to caption it, would probably be..."aiyo, you again. Want to sleep also susah." |

QUOTE(WhyNotYouTeachMe @ Sep 29 2013, 05:45 PM) well since all the conditions did not fullfil for a "sudden change of diet/afraid" i think.. it might be that it is related to:- thanks friend for your points.1. pollution? (new construction project around housing area) the noise/vibration/dirty air 2. drinking too much water? (note that if drinking from a water bottle, it might be that the hog loves to chew on the bottle hence, excessive water consumed) 3. try feeding some (NOT MORE THAN 3) mealworms for it to gain some nutritions (NOT EVERYDAY PLEASE, just weekly). probably due to insufficient nutritions that it might be a sign that it is about to get sick 4. is the surrounding getting too cold? (weather change) 5. at least 10hours of lighting? too much darkness would lead to hibernation if none of them happened. do update, or finally u should bring it to visit the vet, but i wouldnt as this COULD probably be solved with just a finger snap. will take note on 2,3 and especially 5. anyways, is feeding too much mealworm good? my house ppl tends to give it as a bribe. when is the right time to change their kibble from kitten to adult?
kitten kibbles contains more fat, so is it advisable to continue feeding the kitten ones? |

QUOTE(WhyNotYouTeachMe @ Nov 1 2013, 10:43 PM) they would usually just take their "old" usual food, so if for a sudden change of diet, it wouldnt take it for some time until it is hungry, which in other words "forced" to eat the food. another less torturous way is mix the new food with its old food for easier acceptance. Pre-installed sand paper like...wouldn't it hurt their paws?u could get hog wheels with pre installed "sand-paper-like" rollings which is inside the wheel already, when it runs, the friction will shorten its nails. if manually, yes it is a pain in the neck to cut it's nails Btw, is Orijen and Blackwood a good quality food? Or RC still the best? Just surveying some brand. |

QUOTE(WhyNotYouTeachMe @ Dec 30 2013, 04:16 PM) QUOTE(mitahi @ Dec 31 2013, 10:22 AM) dunno if it's good or bad since i didn't find anything factual, but ppl said that it's bad. This says hogs kenot eat anything acidic while this says lime will kill the hog!? he's is doing good. no sign of illness. he took a bite and anoint himself...that's all.anyways i think better to put masam foods away from ur hog. justmy2cents one thing i like to share. my dog had allergies after gobbling my hedgie's fruit leftover. i think the hedgie's saliva caused it, because my dog eats anything and had no allergies before. so, hope you all be cautious if you have other pets. |
